There are a lot of great tips for doing event photography in this thread. Most of those tips will be relevant to you.

If you're shooting inside at the shower and the ceiling is white, use a flash that you can bounce off the ceiling because your camera will probably think it's really dark in there. Otherwise, use the widest apertures you can.

A maternity shoot is a whole different ball game. Those are usually really intimate, so you are going to want lots of time when it's just you and the mom-to-be (aka no audience, like at the shower). For that, you should be studying basic lighting set-ups. i can give you more information on that if you want, but I figured I'd start you off with the tips about event photography.

I had a friend shoot mine, and even though I appreciate what she did, I was not very happy with the shots. So here are my suggestions to you: Move around, engage the guests, try not to shot the mom to be in the middle of a funny or awkward face, shoot the cake and food and get the family together and the mom to be with the shower planner. hey everyone..so this is my first ever shoot like this, its just a casual thing, but id love to make a good impression on them with the photos i take , u know?..so any advice or help would be great..at this stage its just the baby shower she wants photographed but i was hoping she might like some maternity shots done, although i havnt had any experience at this, im going to go look at some maternity/baby shower shots now to get accostumed to it :)
