I didn't realize it was Minimal Editing either and had shot in RAW. :( No entry for me, in spite of some great captures. *SIGH*

However, this challenge was a pleasure to view and score! Going to try to do some more comments :) Wish we had MORE of these types of challenge subjects as the candid shots in B&W are intriguing, making my mind wander with stories behind them. Some of them have had me going back several times to re-look with amusement and wonder. It's such a BEAUTIFUL change from the usual DPC Challenge type, set up, highly posed, no real message challenges! Loving it!

You have rated 97 of 97 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 22 of 97 images (23%) in this challenge.

You have given an average score of 6.2347

well i'm in. after shooting crap all week i picked the cream of the crap. but i feel it best fit the challenge description:
Take a photograph in the style of this photographer who was famous for capturing candids at the "decisive moment".

Oh, a nice turnout so far: 78 entries.

I'd like to ask you all to vote for me. Mine is the desaturated one that wasn't cropped at all.

Thank you.

As long as you vote for mine. It is the one with color and I cropped it as well as made it HDR.. Thanks! :)

Isn't cropping disallowed by the rules? Edit: HDR is disallowed too!

He was joking..lol!

There is a ban on talking about specific entries in a challenge during voting, but not on talking about the topic. Discussions about challenge topic, be it a technical challenge or a stylistic one, is in my opinion a great chance to share ideas, and argue about photography rather than the usual rants on religion or politics.

This thread has been a chance for people who never heard of HCB before to learn what made him an important photographer, and for people who know his work to discover that others see something very different in his work than they do. A chance to see clips of the master speaking and find out about movies made about him. We are supposed to be a photographic community, and sharing our knowledge and feelings about challenges are some of the best discussions on the board.Once submissions are in, conversation ought to skirt saying anything that might point to a particular entry, but until voting starts the more we talk about photography, the better.

I get the most from this site by picking and choosing which threads to read. This one has been hot and cold and a little deflating. I think most photographers love to get back to basics from time to time and this challenge is one of those chances. I for one struggle with all the high tech stuff and love just living in the moment with very simple things. Technology gets in the way much too often in my opinion. Getting to the root of things is a very good thing, especially these days when life moves at the speed of light. I love it when challenges like this one come out, regardless of the editing rules. These types of challenges, are challenging for both the techy and the art driven photog.

For me, colour is normally a distraction. I think this happens when shape elements, etc., become important to you in your pictures.

I usually get obsessive over mundane details in my street photos hich totally get lost without colour instead of the bigger picture.(The tonality of colour I like also seems to adds more grit and texture for me). Right now I like a picture with a man wearing a red shirt and when I desaturate, the picture loses all interest for me. So basically the only thing I liked about the picture is the red shirt which is weird. I may like stark b/w images high in compositional value but I simply do not have the eye to create them.. Which makes this challenge tough.

And the added difficulty is that I have so many pictures I don't know if I'm losing the 'one' in it.

I wish these challenges allotted for more time. I need some time to read and go through the collection and then some time to shoot how I perceived the style.

Oh well...looking forward to HCB II! I may have to enter the sequel instead of the first draft.

I really like these in 'the style of challenges' as it makes me look at things through different eyes and that can only broaden my horizons as a photographer. I'm not that happy with my attempt for this one but i'm really looking forward to examining and voting on the others.

Usually i avoid these pre-challenge threads like the plague. The challenge is 'Blue VII', someone posts links to all the previous 'Blue' challenges. Oh, great, now we all now what Blue is...etc. With these, 'In the Style of...' challenges i think some discussion is interesting and useful though if only because DPC as a whole seems to be lacking in interesting discussions about photography.
