RE: Your opinion on a good monitor?

My opinion always looks better on an old CRT.

I have seen this argument before about using too-perfect monitors and getting less than acceptable results on average screens. This blog post by Yuri Arcurs lists gear that he recommends avoiding and gear that he recommends using. Here's a quote from that page about his choice of monitors for microstock work:

5. Get an apple 30 Inch Cinema display.
A 30 inch cinema. A perfect monitor. Yes…there are monitors out there that have better colors and better contrast such as the DELL 24″. Unfortunately such monitors display your images too good and you end up, under-saturating, under contrasting and sometimes under exposing as well. The 30″ apple cinema is perfectly “shitty” in an ironic way, which makes it “not shitty” but pretty darn good!

The two monitors will be hanging off a Mac Pro and the ATI 5770 has two mini display ports and a DVI port, so I should be OK.

That is interesting, what don't you like about the 3008?

I found that levels and curves done on the Dell 3008 over state the blacks so that when I look at the image elsewhere, the blacks are not as good. The calibration seems to get the monitor relatively OK in the brighter areas, and is fabulous for showing my work to clients. But calibration cannot compensate for the fact that the monitor represents blacks so much better than any other monitor.

Interesting post, I have a couple of the Dell 3008s on my home Mac and have never really been happy with the image quality. I have a couple of Apple 24" on my Mac at work and find they are far better - I trust them more to give me a good representation of how my images come across. I'd recommend two of those; only thing is you'll need to ensure you have a card with two Displayport outputs or stick in a second graphics card.

My 24 inch Dell 2405FPW just fizzed out on me. Looking to replace it and get two 24 inch monitors for my Mac Pro, side by side (I do video also.) I bought the big Dell top of the line 30" monitor (3008FWP) 6 months ago for my office and found that the quality was so incredible that it gave me an unrealistic view of what my images were going to look like on a average monitor. An edited image on the 30" looked fabulous - deep blacks, vibrant colors - and looked like crap on my laptop and a regular monitor (all calibrated).

So what are people's opinion on what we should be editing on for web? I know for sound editing they talk about doing the final mix down to a pair of average speakers because that is what the song will played back on. If my images are going to be viewed mostly on the web, on average quality monitors, then it seems like I should stay away from high end monitors that will just give me a false sense of vibrancy and contrast.

The reviews seem to point to the Dell U2410. But I am concerned that I will have the same problem as the 3008FWP.

Anyone else dealing with this issue?
