i agree with this, my eye isnt drawn to the haircut, its pushed away. |

The dark side of the face shows almost no detail on my monitor. That's not a problem, if that's what you want.
He has a bad case of 'Director's Hair', but I guess the "I forgot to comb my hair" look is in nowadays. The hair color looks much too gray for someone that young, although I know a few people that got gray hair very young, so maybe that's his natural color. The hair also appears over-sharpened, which makes it look like a pile of dry straw sitting on his head.

Hi all,
many thanks for the kind comments and the feedback.
I was a little unsure of the cropping - and - I am using a new monitor and an really wanted to make sure the dark side looked ok in the real word too

I agree that the cropping could have been better. My big question is why you are doubting how the shot looks? From a dramatic concept, it's great. But were you wanting a better more even lighting on the hair itself, then re-shoot if you aren't happy. How are you using it?
You can have a great picture that isn't right for your purpose or a lousy picture that works great for your purpose. The best thing is when it's a good shot that works well too. Is your concern that he hair isn't lit well enough or that you have a great picture?
Just a few thoughts, Hope this helps.

| The work looks good but I find the framing odd. If your intent was to show off the hair styling I think you have been cropping too close to the top. By cutting the frame so close to the top of the head and leaving twice as much room under the chin the emphasis is taken off the hair. |

| For me, the lighting is fabulous. I adore very dramatic differences, and the spill on the camera left shoulder is a nice touch. However, I'm not sure what you're going for with the hair. It it was the style, then it's terrific, wild and contemporary, but for me it looks rather dull and dry. |

Not too dark in general but there is maybe too much light on the hair on the right up side, the effect is similar to gray hairs and on the left side there is a dark spot where hairs are more undefined.
I don't know the effect you were looking for, but I think that a reflector would have helped. Also there is a nice DPC tutorial here, step 1 of this tutorial is about cloning out stray hairs.
The photo is good imo as a portrait but if I focus only on the hair, the lighting could have been better.
 This one of yours is excellent !

| I like it. It's not too dark. The shadow on the face makes it interesting while showing off the hair. |
