Here's the shortlist.

For a technology site, they sure don't present the images well. There's no "next" button to scroll through the large images, so one has to keep going back to the menu page (which loads pretty slowly, too, at least for me).

An even bigger problem is that when you click on a thumbnail, it presents a resized (and slightly fuzzy) large version of the entry. You have to click on the large entry again to see the image at it's best.

Ah well, always next time ;-)
Thx again for all your votes and time spent clicking ;-)

Unlucky h2 and keyz ... still think ours were much better then those choosen, but hey , I am biased ;-)

Hmmmmmmm - I see the winner's avg was in the 3.3 range, which is about what it would score here! :-D

I don't really know... I had friends posting this url in newsgroups and IRC to spread it to a lot of people and it worked.
But to get 52K views, there must have been a bug somewhere...

You should keep your fingers crossed, your placing doesn't matter too much unfortunately:

Originally posted by Rules of the competition:

A Bayesian Rating algorithm based on the peer online votes will be used to establish a shortlist of five amateur and five professional entries per category.

(The Bayesian Rating algorithm is based on the Bayesian Average, a mathematical term that calculates a rating of an item based on the “believability” of the votes. The greater the certainty based on the number of votes, the more the Bayesian Rating approximates the plain, unweighted rating. When there are very few votes, the Bayesian Rating of an item will be closer to the average rating of all items. The algorithm uses this equation:
br = ( (avg_num_votes * avg_rating) + (this_num_votes * this_rating) ) / (avg_num_votes + this_num_votes)
avg_num_votes: The average number of votes of all items that have num_votes>0
avg_rating: The average rating of each item (again, of those that have num_votes>0)
this_num_votes: number of votes for this item
this_rating: the rating of this item
Note: avg_num_votes is used as the “magic” weight in this formula. The higher this value, the more votes it takes to influence the Bayesian Rating value.

I can't do the math, but as much as I understand the entries that came in later and got fewer than average votes have a slight advantage, if their average vote received was lower than the overall average given

Hi all ;)
The shortlist has been picked and will be announced later this week. The PR rep for the competition has told me the shortlist was decided and picked at 6am on the 11th, so even though you can still vote, these votes will not count, so fingers crossed I am in...if it goes on peer votes alone for the shortlist I should be as I was in the top5 ;-)

Thanks again guys and gals ;)
