Ah, yes. the buzzzzzzz. When I saw the first game (and wasn't that a thriller!) between Mexico and So. Africa, it was my introduction to the killer beeeeeezzz. Eventually I too learned they were called the vuvuzela and were made from animal horns. Heck, when an ancestor of mine (by marriage) had such a horn, he plugged the end and stored gun powder in it!
In any event the horn-blowing audience must have burnt off a lot of energy into those things. Energy that otherwise might have been channeled in a less harmless way. Still, I wonder how they could see around the things to watch the game. And, ahem, I wonder just how much bad beer breath bounced onto the field. (gasp)
Okay, I'll stop now.
Another imponderable of soccer, I-mean-football.
The announcers were rough on Green who blew the ball handling detail and let the USA score. Calling it a schoolboy mistake was a bit over the top. But what the heck, he walked off the field with his head held high (with, obviously, an extraordinary effort).
So, all in all, yeah, it was a good game.

He was behind the shot, but he brought his hands too close together and it hit off the heel* of his right hand and spun right around him. If he'd had his hands 6-8 inches apart, the ball would have bounced forward if similarly mishandled. I also think it was such an easy shot that he started to look up to plan an outlet pass before the ball got there, much as a shortstop might let a double-play ball through his legs in his haste to get a fast trail runner ...
*The technical term for the heel of the hand on the thumb side is "thenar eminence," but I didn't think the word eminence belonged in a sentence describing that particular event. |

| Did anyone else notice how rarely the players caught up to long passes? I heard that the field was slick, but given Green's lapse I wonder how slick the ball was. It certainly made it difficult for the US's lob and run to it style, and England's usual crisp one touch passing suffered an amazing number of bobbles on skip passes. No excuse for green not getting his body behind the shot, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out with Spain and Brazil's usually crisp game. |

As pointed out, that is the sound of the Vuvuzela. There are usually thousands of them blowing at any given moment during the match (even though one is enough to be heard through the stadium). But the ones they use nowadays aren't the 'traditional' war horns (those were made from actual antelope horns), they're simply cheap plastic imitations:

doubtful, these things are hardly new, i used to play with one when i was a kid like 15 years ago. Just not the USA cheering style. |

| damned Vuvuzela, uffff a nuisance. on the match, the score a surprise, england a bit disappointing(I don't think that is a really competitor for the best teams). USA an honest match, need 5 points for the surprise.... |

| The US played well enough to deserve the point even though it was on a gift. This might bode well for the US to come out of the group on top. If they wind up tied in points with England you have to like their chances on goal differential. |

Engkand also benefitted from a pretty flagrant non-call at the top of the penalty box -- last time I checked the rules, preventing your opponent from running onto the ball by reaching out your arm and hitting him in the face with your elbow and knocking him down was considered a violation. |

England made a mistake with the team selection, we forgot to bring a goalkeeper. Instead we have Rob Green by name and Green by nature, who forgets he is in goal and it is his job to stop the ball going in the goal! And, David 'Calamity' James, who can be brilliant or complete rubbish.
It is going to be a hard period qualifying for England, unless we get a little magic from someone. |

It's very different when you are there...most American's can't even begin to fathom the energy in the stadium at a soccer match.
