| I base my voting on the field. The best get 10 and the worst get 1 with those in-between spread on a continuum. It would be unfair to use a standard other than the field. |

I think one could find interesting people shots regardless of where one lives. I have 2 big cities at my doorstep, but someone who lives in a small town might just have street photography that captures the flavor of a small town instead of the city.
For instance, do you have farmers market? Lots of great colors and interesting people. Show a stand owner haggling with a customer over an item, for instance. Lots to be found wherever people congregate.

It's because I don't do street photography enough, and I haven't been able to count on a shot from it. Not enough happening in this 'burb to be able to count on something good.

I don't think specific inspiration is needed for this one. Grab you camera, head out and see what interest you can find where you live. I think the street photographers are going to dominate this challenge. |

If you ever start felling bad about your scores, I would warn you against trying for the brown by design. It can be rather crushing to aim for the ground and missing. My personal favorite brown was  though the one in the current peanut challenge is quite good too. |
The peanut challenge is just nuts LOL... and I have no inspiration for the life in your city or the free may challenge... :(

If you ever start felling bad about your scores, I would warn you against trying for the brown by design. It can be rather crushing to aim for the ground and missing. My personal favorite brown was though the one in the current peanut challenge is quite good too. |

| I try to stay consistent. I also try to leave personal taste out of it. For instance I am not a fan of "cutesy" but I dont want to mark down a high quality "cutesy" image because I dont care for "cutesy". I am really here to learn and grow as well as have fun and share my love with others that have the same love. |

I'm not quite sure what you mean ... am I really being obtuse? Funny, 'cause I was always taught to eschew obfuscation.... ;-)
When I vote I always start with the assumptions that the photographer thinks it meets the challenge in some way, and that it looks the way it does intentionally, so if it seems blurry, or dark, or oddly cropped I'll try to figure out why the photographer chose to do it that way.
If I really don't like something I might say how I'd have done it differently, but I never say that the photographer has made a mistake. I might add to a score for humor, extra creativity, or exceptional technical accomplishment, but mostly I vote a combination of how well it meets the challenge and whether I "like" it. My overall voting average is almost two points higher than vote received ... there are a lot of really good photographers here. :-)

Lots of people do some version of this; I think the most common method is to assign votes of either 3, 5, or 7 to "sort" them into groups, and then to go back and refine the votes on a second pass. Any method which works for you is fine, as long as you apply it consistently and fairly. |

I wouldnt of gotten this either... but I would of googled the title... i vote differently i guess... i go thru do a quick vote or "first impression" vote and then when I get the full page I go thru and relook at them from the thumbnails... and i usually end up bumping up a handful because i end up "getting" it or take the time to figure it out. |

Charlie intentionally goes after it. I'm not sure that 'Rook does on purpose, but he is also proud of his accomplishment. Many consider it a game. I'm rather proud of my own lone brownie. It was not an intentional brown effort, though I expected a poor performance for this gag shot. It gained me one of my favorite comments after the challenge and is a success in my book:

I never intentionally try to finish last, But there is a certain satisfaction in submitting something which a few people "get" but which completely passes by the typical five-second voter. For example, check out the comments on this picture, and the discussion it spawned in this thread. In a way, it's like successfully pulling off a magic trick -- the photo meets the challenge perfectly, but in a way most people don't see.

Unfortunately my lack of creativity got me the brown and close to another one i,m not kinda proud of it but its a learning curve i guess correction ..very close to the brown

A DQ after the challenge ends will do that. The positions are calculated at rollover, so you remain at 250th place even if subsequent DQ's reduce the number of valid entries to less than 250. |

Except that's one of Charliebaker's images. There have been a fair number of images finishing worse than last, I've never actually seen an official explanation how that happens, but Whiterook has a couple...
