OK lets break the taboo - BNP - anyone reckon they will get a seat?
05/06/2010 05:21:17 PM · #27
Christ, I hope not! I was so ashamed of Yorkshire when the county returned a BNP member to the European parliament.

Looks like I am on my own.. :(

OK< question 2 - in the event of a hung parliament Labour get first dibs on making a coalition government or other arrangement.. However going by the exit poll, they still wouldnt have more seats than the conservatives - would they still govern with a minority government?

Just been talking about this - seems that they have the right to try. realistically though, if the two main parties were close, I would see it going back to the country in autumn.

Poor show from the lib dem supporters if the exit polls are at all right. Very depressing.

We so desperately need electoral reform if 25-30% of the country can only secure 10% of the parliamentary seats because of the electoral rules.

Hey Matthew! Good to see you..

I personally think if it comes to the situation below (or above depending on how you have your forums settings) that Labour would be wise to dump Brown and bring Alan Johnson to lead - they would walk it if that happened.

I just can't believe the exit polls - certainly here in Yorkshire (York Central, York outer, and Harrogate and Knaresborough) from the many people I have talked to, so many were planning on voting LibDen who hadn't before.

Agreed. Personally I would have liked John Reid to have taken over Blair's mantle.

2226:- The BBC producer in Barking, where Nick Griffin is standing for the BNP, says there's a heavy police presence at the count. But so far there is no sign of any anti-BNP protest. Council sources say the turnout in both Barking and neighbouring Dagenham and Rainham is high.

I've just seen the BBC report of the late queues outside the polling stations in Leeds and the reports that hundreds of people had been unable to cast their votes by the 10pm deadline - never seen anything like it in the UK!

Like I said earlier, our polling station was really busy.. never seen it like that..

Report from BBC

Police have been called to polling stations in Sheffield to move people on who've queued for hours to vote and not been able to. Former Hillsborough MP Helen Jackson says the situation is disgraceful and potentially leaves it open to legal challenge if results are close.

from the BBC minute-by-minute report
'Police have been called to polling stations in Sheffield to move people on who've queued for hours to vote and not been able to. Former Hillsborough MP Helen Jackson says the situation is disgraceful and potentially leaves it open to legal challenge if results are close. ' Extraordinary.

Simms got there first!

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has telephoned David Cameron to congratulate him after the exit poll results were announced. On his Twitter feed, Mr Schwarzenegger wrote: "Just called @davidcameron to congratulate him on the victory. Even though results aren't in we know the Conservatives had a great day."

Arnie?

Exit polls are a bit more accurate in the US than the UK. He might be somewhat premature!

First result in - no surprises although larger swing to the Tories than expected.

BBC - my bold!

'#
2303

Paddy Ashdown, former leader of the Lib Dems, says exit polls are almost always "inaccurate". He says "this doesn't take into account the postal votes" and they account for" 25% of the vote in my old constituency". Another former Lib Dem leader Neil Kinnock also says the figure for the Lib Dems is "almost certainly wrong".

Glad you mentioned this - I saw it but didnt want to look silly by asking if he was once the Liberals leader at some point - I always thought he was as red as his hair.

Sunderland west - 11.6% swing to Conservatives. At this rate it could be a Tory majority.

BBC are saying its higher than Blair had in `97. That would be a landslide. All pundits seem to be distancing themselves from the exit poll.

Any of you uh, Brits, want to give a synopsis of the parties involved? (I'm too lazy to go find it elsewhere, plus I know that nobody is more authoritative on any given subject than any random DPCer.)

eta: I guess a link would suffice, but then you'd be as lazy as me.
