OK...don't ask about my portfolio because I haven't put anything up yet. It does seem, though, that a couple of years ago my picture-taking ability was much better than it is now. Is this a common occurrence? I thought that the more you did, the more you learned, the better you got.

Often, the more you do, the more you realize what can be done, the higher your bar is set.

Either that or you went really interesting places and now you're taking pictures of boring things.

I haven't scored above a 6 in 7 years...

But then I haven't scored below a 4 in the same amount of time either. I am getting tired of looking at the same old entries on my profile.

Yes! My photography is getting worse!

Both excellent points vawendy. Don't know if it's one or the other or both. I've been fidgeting around with settings (ISO, aperture, etc.) and everything seems to be way out of whack. Now I'm feeling a bit "lost," as it were...

The important thing is, do YOU think it's getting worse, or is that based on the scores that others here give you? You may have developed a personal style or choice of subjects that has narrow appeal.

Sadly, I haven't had the courage to post anything, so there's no score to guide my thinking. It's more my assessment of my work compared to things I have from a couple of years ago. They seem to be much better.

Melethia keeps saying that she's getting worse. Look at her stuff and see if you agree. I also have had that feeling for a good part of this year. Look at my stuff and see if you agree.

If Deb and are are getting worse, then it shows that photographers have swings. If you don't agree that we're getting worse, then it shows that photographers have no idea how good/bad their work is and that we're our own worst critic. :D

(btw, I think melethia is out of her mind)

You appear to be in the Exposure or techniques range, which is a lull for how good you think you are. Not to worry Change is gonna come!!

Call me crazy, but I don't think either one of you is getting worse. Correction: call you crazy for thinking you're getting worse. I love your stuff. You are now my new idol!

I saw this earlier on another thread. It's great...and I can certainly relate! Thanks for the link. I had wondered what had happened to that graph and how to find it again. Maybe I should print it, blow it up, frame it, and put it on the wall!

DPC wise, I'm far far worse.
Doing what I like, getting there. Got a hankering for some old film..

I definitely appear to be getting worse dp wise, but I have been able to establish a focus for my photography which I was lacking before. I love photograping abandoned buildings for my artistic side and farming for my documentary side, both rather unpopular topics without much wow factor.

No, seriously. My last 10 challenges have averaged 5.2037. Other than my very first 10 challenges more than 6 years ago, my average has never been this low. I'm quite amazed! And the two I have in competition now are even below that. I've lost the ability to score a 5.2, it seems. Ah well! All in good fun, right?

Nope, just your scores on DPC recently have not been up to your normal standard. Definitely not the same thing as far as I am concerned.

Ditto, with regard to the above comment. Otherwise she's pretty sane!

I have little doubt that the voters now are more critical than they were a couple of years ago. There are a few out there with thousands of votes and a sub 4.2 average...

Don't kick yourselves people - there is some fantastic work going on. Vawendy claiming to have a dip? Come on - look again at that stuff, it's fantastic.

My problem is I keep putting good photography in bad challenges.
05/02/2010 07:02:57 AM · #22
More like good photography in challenges that don't suit the photo. But I am putting bad photos in any challenge so hence the scores. However, I know I take some good pictures every week. they just don't suit the current challenge, EVER.

If you look at most people profile of the ave vote given is below a D (6.00). For the last three years I was here so in my opinion DPC didn't change for the last three years of voting below below average!!!

My photography has always been bad for DPC purposes. It seems I can only really take a good photograph when I don't actually need it for something. If I happen to take one that fits a challenge, fine, it will do alright. But if I have to "find" something, or set something up, forget it.
