I've had to increas the sizes of these external hard drives and am on my third.....never had any issues with the previous two.......March I bought my third and it was always kind of hit and miss when starting up but would come up to speed..........today it stopped the light no longer goes on and the puter isn't recognizing it.....I did a weddin saturday and had managed to burn a disk of 85 images for the couple but that isn't close to the amount on that sucker......I talked to WD support and they are sending me a powerbooster calbe because apparently with this one a lot of computers need two usb ports to give it enough power which does sort of make sense witht he sluggish response it has had since I got it last month.....Anyone else ever have this issue, and if it goes down to the wire

does anyone have a recommendation of where to get file recovery from?

Where does everyone else store their files? I usually don't erase my memory cards but I needed them ACKKKKKKKKKk.

Here is an article from Maximum PC magazine discussing 8 data recovery programs (with links), 6 of them being free.

I lost my Terabyte Maxtor drive completely a few months ago. Totally dead, the BIOS would not even see it on bootup. Fortunately, I had a recent backup and some of my recent flashcards had not yet been erased. Seagate/Maxtor replaced the drive for me and I lost very little.

the thing is it is an external hard drive.........and usually when the computer is on the light on it comes on but no light comes on so it is not even recognized by my computer.......to me and I hope I'm right it is just the power source likes this dude said......because unless my computer recognizes this hard drive it won't recover anything........

Suckerinski's

I took my kids to disneyland for the first time two years ago, and took a thousand shots. Got home and downloaded into PICASA. Which I use to view before uploading into CS3. Always asks: "delete images from card once downloaded?" and I always click yes. Never been problem before or since but in this case for some reason the images got deleted but not downloaded.

Crushing.........but not the same as loosing everything. I sooo hope thats not the case Pikkel.

Oh, and I have no practical advise to give on the subject. I just feel ur pain.

We use the WD passports at work and I have to support them.
I have found them to be VERY picky about the USB power. Some computers have enough power available at the USB port to make the drive happy others do not and require the cable with the dual USB plugs.
If you put the drive up to your ear you should be able to hear it repeatedly, briefly spin up then shut down. This is usually the sign of insufficient power.

For the few that have failed, I have found that failure is usually the USB to SATA adapter built into the case and not the actual drive.
The actual drive inside is a 2.5" SATA laptop drive. I usually take the drive out of the case and plug it into my computer either directly or by using another USB to SATA adapter cable (like this one NewEgg Link) and I am able to get to the data.

In short, if the power cable doesn't work, you have a few other options before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on data recovery.

Feel free to PM me if you need additional help.

also no matter how bad you may want to...please do not go to Bestbuy and use GeekSquad. :-)

thank you all, this one which is much bigger then my previous two has always been touchy and I'm hoping it is the usb issue........I'm trying not to panic, I'm glad when I edit pics I go willy nilly so my bride from saturday is pretty excited about the 85 files she has on a disk.....thank GOD that I'd just burned it seconds before this happened......I'm trying not to freak...something unusual for me but I'm having faith........
