I notice that none of them would win the eye-candy ribbon here ...

Yet they are some of the most powerful images of all time.

That was my point. :-)

The vulture one makes me sick...

What a horrible, sick, sad world we live in. Moving, but all for the wrong reasons, particularly the vulture one and the caption makes it even worse.

#13 is missing

Are WE deliberately making pain/hunger/war 'Iconic'? No wonder it persists!

I wish the "next" set of iconic pictures depict hope, beauty and abundance :)

#13 is missing

I wish other 12 were also missing :)

Maybe but I see it differently.

Not all of these would make my "12 most iconic" but despite that, I am glad that photos of this kind exist.

They are powerful forces for changing things that are wrong and for making the world a better place.

I am thankful for photographers, who (often at great personal cost), are willing to capture and show the world, not just beauty but also it's antithesis simply because if we are not confronted by what is wrong how can we expect it to be changed? They are awful to look at. That is the point for me.

That is how I see it. We are all different.

I totally agree! We are all different and have different perceptions of reality :)

By every means it requires a lot of courage on photographers part to bring such photos to us.

That's a long gone dream. Find me some horrific photos of the Iraq invasion or atrocities in Afghanistan? Those images remind me of what war correspondents used to do as their work. Today they do not exist anymore because of our new way to kill strangers with all the tech being used. Censorship is our new correspondent, who naturally works for the government.

Issues of what photojournalism has devolved into aside, I find the list far from iconic. There aren't that many images on the list I would give that label to, frankly. And there are a hell of a lot of missing images, IMO, if you're talking top-12.

Where's Eisenstadt's image of the gal kissing the sailor in Times Square on VJ day? Where's the gal mourning her slain classmate at Kent State? Where's Robert Capa's image of the soldier in the Spanish Civil Ward at the instant of his being shot? That one belongs up there for sure, it caused a tremendous hue-and-cry, nothing like that had ever been seen before. I could go on and on, but I guess everyone would have his own list...

There's plenty of eye candy from the web site that posted them. Check out the panel on the right.
The 10 most beautiful waves
10 creative pumpkin carvings
10 weird beards
20 works of garbage art
10 designer rubber duckies
etc etc etc
It's more like DPC than you know.

Yes, the Capa image is generally seen to be a fake now. Doesn't stop it being iconic though i'd say. Just look at that moon landing one. ;)

Actually, no. Relatively recently other prints have came to light that indicate the image is not staged. That's been a long-standing bone of contention, but it seems to have been laid to rest.

In any case, whether or not the image is iconic is measured by its place in our collective consciousness, and that would not be affected by later "proof" that it had been staged. It's an image that galvanized the world.

That was written in 2002, but there's a Spanish documentary made in 2007 that still refutes its veracity.
