I'm reaaaaaally confused by the discrepancy between my mostly positive comments and my current score. (4.75) :-þ Even at the beginning of the voting when people were commenting that they were scoring me 7's and 8's, my score was never much above 5. Is this another weird math thing? lol

It's probably because most comments usually only come from those who liked it and those who really, really disliked it. In other words, those who graded something a 4 or a 5 typically do not comment on it. Hence, your comments will be inordinately positive in their scores in comparison to scores overall.

I am seeing the same sort of effect with my entry, as well.

The only time I have had negative comments that were constructive, is when the photo was obviously "flawed" to the viewer. I think there are a lot of people here, probably the non-photographers, who give a lot of 1's, 2's and 3's, if they do not really like the subject. Those scores are hard to recover from. Anything over 5 is a pretty good score here. Remember the winners range from 6-8. So you kind of have to look at the scale topping out at 8, not 10.

i agree with zeissman. often if it''s just "unmoving" as opposed to obviously "flawed" technically, a lot of people will vote, but not comment - mostly because they don't know what to say, and don't feel like they have the right to tell someone their picture is 'boring', because it may not be boring to someone else. . . . : )

Well, I keep telling myself that I'm much more interested in the comments than the actual score. Sometimes I even almost believe myself..lol. It was just odd the first hour I had comments telling me it was an 8, but my score (with just a few votes) so obviously didn't reflect that. I suspect there are people who go through and vote 1's in the beginning of the voting cause a friend has had the same experience.

Or I'm just whining. :-þ

Yeah, I agree with that. I think there's a lot of people who just give 1s and 2s then move on. They don't care enough about the photo to comment, just cut it down as they ride by, like a Cossack.

Wow, someone actually agreed with me?

How many comments are peole averaging? At almost 200 votes, I have 21 comments, only 2-3 actually commented on the photo, the rest were all on the subject -cute, creepy, freaky-

This challenge has been very hard for me to judge technically, as was on the road.

getting alot of comments on this one: 199 votes, 33 comments. . was alot at first but have slowed down lately. .

i know one person that has received an unbelievable 65 comments, lol : )

as far as judging technically there are the obvious things: focus, exposure, cropping .. but yeah i could see how one might want to give interpretive leeway on this one ..

i guess glass is the most prevalent transparent medium, followed perhaps by cloth, water, and the occasional eyeball!

I'm getting a decent score (for me), but only 11 comments so far (~195 votes). As a result, I'm trying to comment on more pictures each day. Maybe they'll take the hint.

My 1st entry received several "It's boring" comments which I found to be extremely constructive. When I took a good close objective look, I had to agree wholeheartedly. Those that told me it was boring have been a great help and I'm trying to keep it in mind for future shots, both for the challenges and in my day to day captures.

Thanks all!

hmm ..

i just looked at the comments and those that said it was boring did not say why. . . therefore, I am curious: what aspect of the photo do you feel could be improved based on those? : )

...and how can you not "get" a picture of something that is definitely transparent?
07/05/2002 07:00:30 PM · #13
not sure whom you''re responding to but I''ll give this a stab : )

let''s see ..

"whether or not a picture meets the challenge doesn''t have a bearing on whether or not it''s an interesting pic. that is an independent attribute entirely. in addition to meeting the challenge, the photographer may be trying to make a particular statement or evoke a particular mood."

btw, re-looking at your mall rug rats pic, i had this impression that if it was more closely cropped around the big banana and the right side of the wooden thing to the right of it, the most (to me) interesting thing about it, the banana, would have more of a ''starring role.'' : )

*gloat* Last week I was at the bottom of the heap. This week at 200 votes 23 good comments and score 5.655. He he. aelith

Good for you aelith, I am doing much better this time too, I am at 5.3 something, and very proud of that. I was only able to do one shooting, with a very difficult subject. I am really happy with my results, handheld at 1/50th of a second with a moving subject.

That was the problem :) I decided maybe sidewalk chalk to spruce it up... My wife suggested monopoly houses and hotels...

But seriously... I just came to the conclusion that the pebble (which I placed there) wasn''t enough to thrill the masses :) The comment on symmetry was the most helpfull and I feel it would have been less boring if it didn''t split the image in two quite so cleanly... Maybe a 35 degree angle instead of a 45... Maybe I''m overthinking it :) I still like it though.

Me

PS ~ I was stunned that 2 folks voted it a 10. I would have given it a 7 or so...
