What software do you all use to backup your images?
I am using MS SyncToy for my backup but i faced some issues which i hope someone in CS can help me with.

As both my external hdd are not plugged in to the pc all the time, each time i want to backup my files/folders i only plug the hdd in. By doing so, the drive letter always change.

In MS SyncToy, the sync folders pair that I made earlier are based on the previously assigned drive letter. In the end i need to make a new pairing each time i want to sync my hdds.
Is there a solution or other software to recommend?

I started using Super Flexible after seeing it recommended in another thread here, and it works great. 30 day free trial sold me on it.

You probably dont want to change everything over. But I use Lacie 2big quadra 1TB in a RAID1 configuration. The hardware handles it all for me and my laptop see a 500 GB HD. I store all my originals on this drive.

You should be able to assign the same drive letter each time the drive connects... can't remember how to do it off the top of my head (administrative tools, computer management, disk management, something like that - although don't mess about in there if you don't knwo what you are doing :-)). Google might help you solve that one.

You got me wondering, so I did some looking around. The only thing I've found is a free program that in theory lets you do exactly that (permanently assign a drive letter to an external drive). I haven't tried it, so use at your own risk. //www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html

Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management

In the left column select Storage | Disk Management while the removable drive is plugged in. In the right hand column, right-click on the drive and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths". Select a drive letter from the drop down.

Alas, that method isn't permanent. If you choose letters that probably won't be stolen by anything (around the Q,R,S,T range), you might not have to deal with it as often.

Yep, that's the trick. And yes, you have to choose a drive letter that won't be stolen while the drive is disconnected.
I keep my backup drive connected at all times, but just let it go to sleep when not in use. And poof, Bob's your uncle.
BTW, if you use NAS or if you have to back up to Sharepoint folders, make sure you are using SyncToy 2.1

Beyond Compare (it does CRC and binary comparison checks)

I also backup to external hard drives using Paragon Backup and Recovery. It is EXCELLENT FREE software for backups.

P.S. Beyond Compare is commerical, but it does the trick because you can run scripts. If you want free software to do CRC checks, use md5summer

I am using a software called Dmailer Backup Software .
Is a free software that allows you to backup your important data and if you want to save it online on their servers ( the software is 100% free but online storing is only free up to 3gb ,but they have good prices for larger packs )
I am using it for a long time and i didn\\\'t encountered any problems with it so i advise you to use it

I have used several backup programs for years, and I recommend Handy Backup software, it's easy and reliable tool for backup images.

SyncToy is a great tool, it's what I use both at work and at home. Version 2.1 even supports backup to SharePoint volumes.
Moose already gave you the key to making sure the drive letter doesn't change, just assign something that won't get stolen and you are golden.

I use two different things. I have a network storage unit (2TB with Raid so 1TB of storage but redundant in case one of the drives fails) All my stuff goes their. can be accessed by any machine (tho you can set users and passwords).

I also use a 2TB secondary drive on my main machine, I have repointed things like 'My Documents' 'My Pictures' and such to that drive, so worse case even if my computer fails everything I use is still safe. Items sit their until moved over to my network storage. I use a simple program called RoboCopy to do the move over.

I use ChronoSyncc, not sure if there is a Windows version. External drives always mount the same way on the mac, so I just attach my primary and backup drives via firewire and let Chronosync do it's thing.
