I saw someone posted a link to a demo of the Microsoft Courier tablet the other day. It looks pretty awesome, but who knows how long Microsoft will actually take to get that into retail...

So anyway, since the iPad is already out, does anyone know if you could shoot tethered to the iPad? I think that would be pretty useful, rather than lugging around a laptop.

It would need something to lean on for viewing it and that to me is not a good thing. Maybe Google's tablet will have some sort of stand for it to stay upright.

There are various iPad stands out there, but no need to get into that.

If by thethered shooting you mean the images go directly to the iPad, I don't think that's available. But there is an accessory that let's you download both JPEG and RAW images from your camera to your iPad: x//store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A

But only at 64gig total memory how useful would it really be? In an emergency and just need a few more shots it would would work but the amount of available memory seems to really limit it imho.

That's interesting. Another plus for the pad.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to use it as a storage device.

But like I said, I would like it for tethered shooting when I'm out on location. More convenient to carry around, and I'm sure the battery life would be better than my laptop. And that big shiny screen would certainly enable me to spot check focus/DOF, etc better than my little 2-inch camera monitor.

Despite all Apple's and the fanboys' protestations, iPad is a large iTouch. Can you shoot tethered to your iTouch, or iPhone? You therefore won't be able to on iPad.

It would entirely depend on a supporting app developed by Nikon or a third party, and would need to be done while using the iPad Camera Connection Kit (another $29, thankyouverymuch). I don't see it happening, and I'm not certain it would even be technically feasible. I assume that once a camera is plugged in, iPhone OS goes into some kind of "synching" mode to start the photo download from the device.

Despite some people's obvious desire to knock all things Apple, there is an app that might be what you're looking for.

Not sure this totally fits the bill, but it is interesting. It's not out for the iPad yet, but I know a few photographers that love it.

I expect to see more apps along these lines with the popularity of the iPad.

So what good is it if you need

3. A laptop or desktop computer running the free companion DSLR Remote Server software

to make the app work? Why not just use the laptop?

Hehe, David you gotta stop being the very next post after someone besmirches the name of Apple...

Hmm.. looks like they need a CF version.. Not sure SD would be too helpful to any of us. Guess you could use USB, but it would take awhile.

Just to be clear, I'm not an apple besmircher, I kind of like the iPad. Just pointing out a fact that at the moment the iPad lacks a few things it needs to make the tethered operation work. But I'm sure they will be there in the next version. Not sure why they chose to cripple it to some extent in the initial roll out.

I guess so you don't have to be next to the computer or the camera?

I think this is more of a remote control than a tethered app. Seems to me if they can do this they could pull off what the OP wants.

I'm betting you are right and I'm sure they will pull it off eventually. My iTouch runs the same app for remote to both Canon and Nikon. It will be nice when you can view the image on the i product along with the remote control.

I do get the impression David either holds stock in Apple or they are a business partner. :P

That, and the stock is the best performer in my portfolio. Bought it at less than $30. Seen the price lately?

Wish I had bought more.

You guys give this much flack to Nikon enthusiasts? I also have the unique quality of actually knowing what I'm talking about. ;-)

Ditto. I'm not sure about the viability of tethered shooting, though. For one thing, there's no way to calibrate the screen. Storage would obviously be an issue, not just for the files themselves, but also for the data necessary to support all the various cameras and RAW formats.

Posted from my iPad. ;-)

Now, if the 3G iPad could be used as a router, with the other home computers going through the wifi, I'm there. 3G unlimited data plan for $29.95? I'm paying $49.95 for "up to" 1 Mbit, that never seems to get "up to". Never thought I'd miss Comcast, but I do. Rural living has a drawback if you want high speed internet. No DSL either.

Hey, I own more Apple products than you. My main computer is a MacBook Pro 17, I use it on one of them fancy schmancy LED screens, I've got all its accessories... two iTouches (isTouch?), iPhone... just because I don't evangelize for the damn things doesn't make me a besmircher. :P I calls em as I sees em.

Not quite tethered but I've already seen the setup where Canon + wifi transmitter saves the images live to a server and the iPad views the images (jpg versions) from the server in the Safari browser. Most amazing part was that the photographer was on the West Coast and the iPad user here in New York while the shoot was taking place.... that's a very long tether!

You need to come out of the closet with your Zune and Gates autographed edition of Windows Vista!

I think it's me he likes to besmirch. ;-)

being stuck for the foreseeable future here in France, the iPad has been a godsend!

Just loaded 6,677 photos on to the iPAD with many GBs remaining for more. What an amazing tool for photographers.

It compressed 36GBs of JPEGs and NEF files to about 3 GBs and they still look wonderful.

So, folks, it is a powerful viewer and tool to display images rather than ingest them during a photo shoot. Besides, why would I want to do that when the camera cards can hold so many images themselves. I go from camera (untethered) to laptop to iPAD. It works perfectly for me.

Since my primary use is for sharing technical ideas and field images of projects, it is ideal.
