Travel is one of the primary reasons I want one, So much easier to transport around the world. No more hassles of having to remove laptop from bag at the airport etc... I can't wait to get my hands on it. Although the first two weeks I have it I wont be able to play with it much but once I get it back here to NZ and can tap into my Itunes and load all my CD's and apps that I have downloaded for my ipod touch on to it I will certainly be having some fun. Going to Australia in August and again in October so it will be very nice to have along for the trips.

I have been on the fence with if i should or not buy an Ipad since they released it. Hasn't been too hard to avoid because they have not released them here in NZ. But in two weeks I am going back to Wisconsin for a visit and had decided that I would purchase one when I go back. I have been watching Best Buys website checking to see which stores have them in stock and all the stores in the area I am from have been out. I was looking at the 16gig version or maybe the 32 gig version but they have not been in stock for the longest time however 2 stores have had the 64 gig in stock. So today I bit the bullet and called one of the local stores and placed an order by phone. Paid for a 64 gig in full and they will be putting it aside until I arrive to pick it up. The main reason I did this is to take advantage of the 18 months interest free financing. That and I wanted to be sure that I got one while I am back without having to drive all over the country to find one. I also made an order from the Apple Store for the Camera attachment kit. So I should be good to go. If they have the other versions in stock when I arrive to pick it up, I am able to downsize to one of the others as long as the package remains unopened.

I bought a 64gb 3G iPad for myself and a smaller wi-fi version for my wife. Neither of us have touched our laptops since. Other than photo editing, the desktop is not being used either. I absolutely love it and typing this right now from my iPad in a hotel room in Sweden. The iPad is now also my only device (other than my iPhone) used for travel - both business and pleasure.

The concept of apps that are super cheap increases the initiative for developers and as a result The iPad now does things easier and better than my lap/desktop. For example one button access to parcel tracking, business reports etc. If there isn't an 'app' for it, it probably isn't worth having! :)

I also use it to take notes in business meetings with an app that stores everything in 'the cloud' so you can access your notes from the web later. When I cheer meetings I don't appreciate use of laptops since I feel it is difficult to connect with the audience when they're hiding behind their screens.

You can see Google copying this strategy somewhat, which may not be good for them.

And the XBox didn't show a profit until 2008. It launched in March of 2000. Only Microsoft could last that long with an entire division losing millions of dollers per year for 8 years.

I'd have to see a comparison of other companies when they enter the field for the first time to know if this is good or bad. In the end though, the X-box is a force to contend with and is a heralded gaming system seen as the essential system for the hard-core gamer.

Sorry Dave, I have to Side with Doc on this. I have an Xbox 360 and Ever since I bought it I havent touched my nintendo Wii. ;)

I think Dave is only claiming that it took 8 years for the XBox to become profitable. The Wii didn't come out till 2006 and almost immediately started to make a profit. The Wii and XBox serve two different markets and both are successful at it. To see how well the Wii has done see the "System Sales" section in this wiki link.

Yeah, that was my point. I agree the XBox is a fine gaming platform, although I've halted the inclusion of gaming consoles at chez Scarbrough to a Wii and PS3.

What it showed was at one time MS had the vision and commitment to stay with a product line. They also had the cash to bleed money for 8 years to see it through. While they still have the cash, I don't see that commitment to any of the new endeavors. The Kin product was on the market for a matter of days. They had a big spend in an advertising campaign prior to the launch, the investment in acquiring Danger, and the R&D spend to bring it to market and then killed it almost immediately. This same process would have ended the XBox within 2 years or less. I think this is a reflection of the top management now versus 10 years ago.

I also think that's why MS stock is basically at the same price it was 5 years ago. Apple's stock is 6 times higher in the same time frame.

Note to Jaime - Do we really need to know about the last time you touched your Wii? ;-)

It's more likely that this reflects how "small" Apple was six years ago. Would it even be possible for MSFT stock to mulitply by 6x? How big would that market cap be? Still, I am in full agreement that Apple kicked it into another gear by reinventing itself. If Apple were only a Mac store still, its stock would be nowhere near where it is now.

MS stock has been hovering around $25 dollars in the last 5 years. Apple was at $41 5 years ago, $245 today. We all know that Apple's market cap is larger than MS now. The high target for Apple is $375. The high target for MS is $40

Regardless of the market cap numbers, as a long term investor, the 5 year performance of MS stock is anemic to say the least. You would have been better off putting your money in an interest bearing checking account for the last 5 years rather than investing in MS.

The reason Microsoft has many security issues is because 90% of users have a Microsoft Windows based pc. Why would a hacker write a virus and only take out 10%, when he can take out 90%? If, and this is a bif IF, Apple ever gets close to having the majority market share, watch how many viruses and security vulnerablilities Apple has then. If I am not mistaken, a few years back when this was a hot topic, a hacker started writing viruses for Apple based machines to prove that Apple has many security vulnerabilities also.

This is an excerp from PCWorld:
Microsoft's dominant operating system Windows and its leading Web browser Internet Explorer have a reputation for being vulnerable to attacks. Security experts point out that Microsoft's market share dominance promises malware developers a significantly higher return on investment than the Mac OS platform, which owns 5 percent of the OS market. Other operating systems (including Mac OS) and Web browsers -- including Google's own Chrome Web browser -- have also suffered from security vulnerabilities.

Except none OS X exploits could actually be released in the wild. That is a misconception on the market share being the reason why Windows gets hacked more than any other OS. With the recent gains made by Apple some have said that we will see more hacking attempts on OS X. So, I guess we'll see, but don't hold your breath. The virus/malware score is still Microsoft 500,000+ Apple 0

But we were talking about stock performance. If you're happy with Windows security then my all means keep using it.

Oh, there is no way I'm making the argument that investing in AAPL was a worse move. My point was that only "small" companies can show that kind of growth. As you show, 5 years ago AAPL was 1/6th the size of MSFT by market cap. Now that AAPL is as large as MSFT would you expect it to further multiply its market cap by 6x? Not likely. There comes a point in size where you stop growing. You start paying dividends instead of the stock still going up. MSFT pays a dividend while AAPL doesn't.

Again, AAPL was clearly the smart pick, but back then who knew? My mom worked for MSFT in 1986. I guess she should have picked up some stock and held it back then!

Look at it this way. Had you picked up apple in the beginning in 1986 you would have made a 9000% profit. MSFT? 23,000%. Had you somehow sold at the top of each? You'd make 9000% with AAPL, and nearly 60000% with MSFT.

AAPL is just getting going. MSFT has been around the block three or four times. The two are hard to compare except AAPL currently has a larger market cap.

Point taken.

Forward looking, I don't think either stock is going to see the gains they've had in the past. But from a general growth perspective you have to give the nod to Apple. A few years ago the iPod was main earnings piece of the Apple portfolio. Now it's less than 10%, even though the iPod volume has grown every year. The introduction of the iPhone and more recently the iPad has propelled Apple over every other tech company. iPods and Macs have had unprecedented growth in total numbers, but the portfolio continues to diversify.

Microsoft meanwhile hasn't had a new major product launch in quite some time. So the dividends is the only bright spot amid an otherwise unimpressive "new to market" growth strategy. And that is the dark side of having a huge market share in a particular area, there's nowhere to go but down. Anytime market share for Macs or Linux goes up, it is always at the expense of Microsoft. So, unless they can innovate in the way of new product offerings, something they haven't done since the XBox, the stock price outlook won't be good.

No, this one

David...I wanted to follow-up for anyone else who is connecting to a remote server. I ended up using iTap which (to my surprise) worked better than I anticipated. The mouse functionality via taps worked much better than I thought as well and the keyboard came up immediately. When the search for RDP on the ipad only showed three apps and iTap was the first one on the list and was the same price of $11.99. So, all is well. Thanks again!

I continue to look for a device that will suite me. I wish there was one with a decent physical keyboard. What would it be like to take notes on an iPad? Serious notes like 2-5 sentences at a time. I'm looking at the eReaders like Nook and Kindle and I think the little nook virtual keyboard would be a joke so that is probably out.

Hmm, thanks Mae. That's a definite possibility although I guess it cuts down on the convenience factor.

I bought the Apple bluetooth keyboard and the dock. Have not even connected it. I didn't think the virtual keyboard would be very good. It is much better than I expected.

The only issue I run into is I'll type a letter (N or V mostly) instead of the space bar. There is no tactile difference between the keys, of course.

Almost any BT keyboard will work or USB keyboard with the USB adaptor. I've been thinking of getting one of those rubber roll up ones.

I recommend trying the virtual KB first before spending money on a physical KB.

A few sentences is easy. I type most of my DPC responses on my iPad (including this one). If you can type properly, you'll do better, though I've found that due to the non-tactile nature of the virtual keyboard, using index fingers while looking is best. I can still type quickly doing that, as fast as regular typing, but with no mistakes on iPad.

Kindle is a great reader on iPad. I prefer it to iBooks.

Concur on the typing.

I use both readers, I have 2 issues with the Kindle app, both can be fixed.

1. single page in landscape mode, I prefer the 2 up that you get with iBooks.
2. Inline dictionary.

Well, my wife made the choice for me and got me a Kindle for our anniversary. I'm really enjoying it so far. The physical keyboard is great and the display, although B&W, is awesome for reading outside. Battery life, also, is literally weeks. One can do rudimentary web-browsing via 3G for free (although I'm guessing it's far from the experience on an iPad or even iPhone).
