Well I certainly don't agree. Apple has this great concept of Mobile Me, with everything always synchronized between my devices. I really enjoy that. If I cannot use this feature on the iPad (because it would be shared by my family), then it's worthless for me. I mean, it cannot be the idea to buy one for each family member, can it??

That's what we did, but I agree, profiles would be nice. Maybe in the next OS update in the fall.

Doesn't MobileMe have accounts? Wouldn't each member just login to their account when they want to use that service? (Just like other things like Facebook and Email.)

I've had my US-bought iPad for a few weeks now and I find I use it more than any other device I have (taken over from my iPhone in that regard). The Apple case and camera connection kit seemed to be hard to get in the US but those items were easily sourced at my local (UK) Apple store now that iPad has been released here.

A few words on the Apple case. It does a good job at providing an effective typing rest but it feels and looks dreadful.ItpPicks up marks like you wouldn't believe and edges have a shockingly unfinished look and feel. It transforms the iPad from something that is nice to hold to something that really, really isn't. I like the concept of the case, but surely it could've been manufactured differently. It is the most un-Apple product I have owned.

Does anybody know whether there are cases offering similar functionality without the nasty material and ruinous edges of this case?

I'm unimpressed with the Apple case, too, particularly the edges. I've seen a couple of others, but nothing that look any better. I'd like a more portfolio type of case. Something with a pocket on the left flap to hold papers when necessary.

Did a search just now and found this and this, the last one isn't available yet.

More will come I'm sure.

Griffin makes very high-quality gizmos. Their case is much cheaper through other vendors like MacMall, but I don't know if it's available yet.

Those look far better in quality. Thanks for the heads up.

I've managed to accumulate a little library of available cases for the purpose, although I'm more inclined toward an ultra-thin skin plus a leather sleeve-type bag. The best, reasonably priced case I've found that most resembles the Apple design is this one.

There are other beautiful leather cases, namely those by Vaya and Orbino, but for a price.

I just bought a Nook and am considering returning it and using the money to get an IPAD. I know of at least one photographer who plans to use it when meeting with potential clients to show her work.

On the Orbino site, you can buy a crocodile skin iPad case for $689

Wouldn't that make the case more expensive than the iPad ?

Here's a question. Do these devices work over public hotspots? iPad, iPhone, Droid, etc. or can you only use the services that you subscribe and pay for? I've never really understood that with smartphones and the like.

Works over WIFI.

I just won an IPAD at work and it is pretty cool. I have the Nexus One phone running Android 2.2 and it has WIFI tethering, I can make it a hot spot and use my Ipad to surf and stuff.

I guess one of my resistances to joining the smartphone generation is the recurring cost. Is it really worth paying that much per month for something I seem to currently be getting by without? My bill for two cell phones is currently $72. Does that even get you in the door with an iPhone or Droid?

Well not with ATT but my unlimited data plan with T-Mobile is $29 on top of my minutes. We have a family plan with 3 users and 2 data plans and my bill is around $200 per month.

Ouch. Be still my poor, cheap, beating heart.

So another dumb and obvious question. What about iPads? Do you need a service plan with them? They aren't phones. How does that work?

You can get the WIFI only iPad, but you have to have a wireless network (I'm sure you already have that) or be at a hotspot. I heard Starbucks is going to offer free wifi in all its locations soon.

As for the 3G/wifi iPad, I think the 2 GB plan is $25 a month. No contract, you can go a month on a month off if you want. I use the wifi most of the time. If I am going to travel or something, I'll buy a month of 3G.

See my previous post.

As the phone part, The 3G iPad still gets a phone number for some reason. I guess this is the only way AT&T has of accounting for the device. That's a lot of wasted telephone numbers.

Note that you don't have to go 2GB. The 250MB version is $14.99, and as David pointed out you can start and stop any month you like.

Shannon is right. I just spoke to AT&T support last week to downgrade my iPhone dataplan from a USD30/unlimited to USD15/250MB per month. In my case however, I cannot go back to the unlimited dataplan anymore since they won't be providing that as an option anymore.

?!? Call back and see if you get a different answer from a different person. Both plans are listed prominently on their website (and Apple's).

He's right that the unlimited plan is no longer offered. You can go back and forth between the 250 MB and 2 GB plans as much as you like, but the unlimited plan is no longer offered. People who still have it are "grandfathered" and can stay on it, but once you switch away from it you can't go back.

That said, I'm a pretty heavy iPhone user and I don't even come close to 2 GB.

Gotcha. I was reading 2GB as unlimited. I forgot that there was an earlier version.

Not unlimited, but for nearly all users, it's close enough.

The iPad settings page where you choose the plan also shows your usage so far for the month, so you can gauge where you are. Also keep in mind Wifi usage doesn't count against the total.

So if you have an iPad, there's no particular reason to have an iPhone if you don't mind lugging both your iPad and your phone around. The cost would even be the same, right? iPhone data plans are also going to be $15 on AT&T.

True, but only when you have a phone too. iPad won't let you make calls unless you use Skype or apps of that sort, which may not work always as that interferes with Apple/ATT's business model:-)
