It depends on your needs. I mostly use it as a portable portfolio (with a relatively small set of photos in several categories) and don't have a huge library of apps, music, books or videos, so 16GB is plenty for me. Anywhere I'm likely to go online will probably have WiFi, so I don't need 3G either. My wife actually got me the the 32GB version and I returned it unopened for a 16GB. With only 3Gb used on an iPod Touch, I figured I'm better off saving money now that I can put towards a later model if my needs ever outgrow it.

We have one of each. I like having the 3G when I need it. The wifi performance is best of course. The battery life on both is outstanding. I used it on a trans-Atlantic flight for most of the flight.. Watched a movie, read a book and listened to music.. The battery was at 48% when we landed.

I'm a news junkie, NYT, USA Today, AP, BBC all have apps.

Looking forward to the OS update in the fall for multitasking and hopefully printing.

As Shannon mentioned, the Photo app is really good. You can vote on DPC challenges on the iPad now. If everyone did that the average scores would go up .5, photos look amazing on the device.

Like scalvert, I'd be interested in a portable port as well. I'm also facing serious color proofing challenges and need a portable replica of my iMac monitor (calibration issue) to communicate what I see, i.e. an iPad. I'm going 64GB Wi-Fi.

There's an app for that already. You can print wirelessly.

I got one called Print Central. You have to also load a program on your Mac or PC. You can control a print queue from the iPad, but you have to get your file from the iPad to the computer. The only way to do that is to sync. I want to print from the iPad without having to connect tot the computer first.

Do you know of some other app?

Dropbox just released an iPad version.

Just watched "Avatar" last night. In one scene Sully held something that looked like a see-through (albeit a little big) iPad.

Excellent movie though. I've never been a huge fan of science fiction, but this was just amazing - particularly in BlueRay!

Can you do Netflix streaming with 3G? I heard a lot of streaming stuff (like TV shows and etc.) aren't available in 3G.
Also, can any of shed some light on the 3G plans? Is the $15/month enough if you're mostly using the iPad with wifi?

Not sure about Netflix, but ABC will not work on 3G and you tube gets much lower resolution.

I bought the $15 plan to start, I don't think it will be enough. I go wifi whenever I can.

I've used 37mb out of 252mb in 5 days. So maybe it'll be enough.

Here are three that claim to do the job:
1, 2, 3.

Andriod prototype tablet playing a Flash youtube video - - and crashing.

BTW - the iPad/iPhone plays YouTube videos just fine. Converts it from Flash to H.264 on the fly. Looks better, too.

ABC just updated their app to stream video over 3G.

Look, your going to believe what you believe but the guy says it did not crash but he hit the home button. He also has a second clip that shows it playing a flash You Tube video just fine. I'm not sure what to believe until I can see one myself but I don't normally drink the cool aid from any corporation.

I might find out soon as I'm looking at the new Droid Incredible phone.

I don't think it's converted on the fly. I think Google has converted a large set of their videos specifically for H.264 consumers (HTML5 browsers and iDevices).

Anyway, Flash is much more than video. It's a tool that allows engineers and creative professionals to collaborate to create beautiful, powerful, interactive websites. It's not going anywhere for a long, long time, and it's just a shame that Apple has taken such a dislike to it. There are a slew of coders/designers out there who would love to create enriching apps for the iDevices.

But I realized why it behooves Apple to restrict the iDevices with their systems and rules. If Apple didn't restrict them so much they'd start to feel like a computer, and people have expectations from computers - they'd start to wonder why they can't multitask or install software or peripherals at will, and why certain Apple software is installed by default and can't be removed or replaced with a competing product, and then the FTC would get all huffy...

Not bad, but his problem seems to be that no one should ever have to pay for software, ever.

if his solution is for everyone to go to Linux, well, good luck with that.

I use Linux a lot, but it isn't ready for the masses, not sure it ever will be. My favorite flavor these days is Ubuntu.

Well, he is management at The Free Software Foundation. And that's not the foundation's mandate. The foundation's mandate is exactly that which Jobs claimed was Apple's mandate, but disingenuously so, namely the promotion of "the development and use of free (as in freedom) software and documentation — particularly the GNU operating system — and by campaigning against threats to computer user freedom like Digital Restrictions Management (DRM)". Their mandate is not to stop the sale of software. Anyway, his article was about hypocrisy, not advocacy.

Mine was delivered today, and so far so good. One has to remember what this device is for. It's not a laptop replacement. It's not going to be a great word processor, or image editor, or anything of the kind. As a general business tool, it lacks. I suspect anyone expecting these things will be disappointed.

We are using it as a kind of appliance, to read e-mail and browse websites, that can be left around the house for just such a purpose in lieu of going to a computer, sitting down, and waking it. In that sense, it does replace the 2 and a half kilo laptop that formerly presented its extension cord for tripping next to the coffee table and which was too awkward to ever lug out anyway. The apps built for the device are beautiful. As someone who loves his iPhone, it's a familiar interface, but different enough to be interesting.

So if your expectations are modest, it will probably be everything you hoped for and a lot more. If you wanted everything to begin with, don't bother.

Good expectations. I'd say if you buy a net book for web browsing, email, and the low resource demanding app, the iPad can compete.

Viewing photos is awesome though. I did find a couple of fun photo apps, Photogene for basic edits and TiltShiftGen for making those model looking scenes. Very fun to play around with.

the iPad has the potential for being a the next great portable gaming platform. Pinball HD is my current favorite time waster.

That's a good reason why I would immediately buy one. But as far as I'm aware, you cannot have multiple user accounts. If I don't have my emails and bookmarks ready, I prefer using a computer. Does anybody know if there is a workaround? Or is Apple working on this? ...They probably prefer selling one to each family member ;-)

A workaround for what? Remember, it's not a computer, and the minute you begin thinking of it as one, it ceases to be useful as intended. Multiple user accounts on a device like this doesn't really make sense. You can have multiple mail accounts in the mail reader.

Well I certainly don't agree. Apple has this great concept of Mobile Me, with everything always synchronized between my devices. I really enjoy that. If I cannot use this feature on the iPad (because it would be shared by my family), then it's worthless for me. I mean, it cannot be the idea to buy one for each family member, can it??

That's what we did, but I agree, profiles would be nice. Maybe in the next OS update in the fall.

I've had my US-bought iPad for a few weeks now and I find I use it more than any other device I have (taken over from my iPhone in that regard). The Apple case and camera connection kit seemed to be hard to get in the US but those items were easily sourced at my local (UK) Apple store now that iPad has been released here.

A few words on the Apple case. It does a good job at providing an effective typing rest but it feels and looks dreadful.ItpPicks up marks like you wouldn't believe and edges have a shockingly unfinished look and feel. It transforms the iPad from something that is nice to hold to something that really, really isn't. I like the concept of the case, but surely it could've been manufactured differently. It is the most un-Apple product I have owned.

Does anybody know whether there are cases offering similar functionality without the nasty material and ruinous edges of this case?
