Makes sense with HP's purchase of Palm. WebOS by Palm is a ground up touch device designed OS. Pretty impressive from what I've seen. Should be good competition to keep Apple on its toes with the iPad, much better that Windows 7 on a touch device.

Given Steve Jobs' track record of recognizing emerging and fading technologies (the mouse, GUI, Postscript, floppy disks, USB, PDAs, serial ports, WiFi, touch, etc.), I wouldn't want to bet against him if he says the days of Flash are numbered.

Exactly. And I wouldn't want to invest in any new flash dependent technology.

I wouldn't necessarily bet against Job's, but the tail is trying to wag the dog. At least so far... Flash "runs" on Macs, runs on PCs. The total market share for iPad is what? iPad is popular, I want one, and all. But I don't think that Steve is quite that big a voice just yet. Not to mention that I get good laugh when he talks about closed technology from other people. I wonder how many tries it took him to say it with a straight face.

That being said, I still want one. I love my Mac. I just happen to see hypocrisy in his actions.

I got mine yesterday (64gig 3G) and I love it. I am going to wait a bit to activate the 3G. I need to get used to it 1st.

This message was posted from an iPad.

I got my 64GB yesterday and was disappointed that there was no Flash but I am still loving mine for what it does do. Playing my photos over dinner for people to watch was awesome, had the attention of everyone sitting around us in the restaurant (which got more requests for info on future jobs). I did not get the 3G model, there are too many free WIFI spots and I have my own traveling internet so the 3G would have been a waste of money for me.

I know I've been MIA .. busy with our business, my kids growing up and moving on and now back into my photography again (when the business lets me, which isn't often enough). :)

Got the 64GB 3G on Friday.

Pretty good performance on the 3G, nice to have the maps in the car, more detail than the GPS.

WiFi seems the same.

How do you activate it for 3G? I understand from the FAQ that you can't just use a sim card - for example the one you already have in your iPhone. I assume there is no way of talking on it but that 3G is only for Internett connectivity.

You activate from the iPad, in the US it's $15 for 250MB/month, $30 for unlimited. International roaming is sky high, $200 for 250mb/Month. I read somewhere that the other Sim cards will work if they can use the AT&T network (again, US), but not sure, I'll thry to find out where I read that.

No, you can not use it as a phone, except for Skype type calls.

I got a 32GB wifi version yesterday - not available in the UK but I'm in the US this week, so it seemed silly not to!

Noticed that some accessories are tricky to get hold of.

Also, ergonomically, I haven't quite gelled with it yet - I think the Apple stand / case will help but that was out of stock.

Screen is fabulous - as a media player, the device rocks.

App store isn't available to a UK user yet... BUT iPad apps CAN be downloaded via iTunes on my MacBook Pro and then sync'd over. No Apple apps seem to be available though - I wanted Bookstore and Pages in particular so I guess I'll have to wait.

Working in a hotel room at the moment and I've sent a PowerPoint to the iPad and using it as a second screen to display the presentation as I type notes on my MacBook. This is making a great difference to my productivity level today. Using a little boomerang stand (useless!) - again the Apple stand would be very welcome.

So, from what I see here Steve Jobs IS God. Am I right? Wow never thought I would see a human God. What's his nick-name, Kratos? ;)

Well Adobe's Flash Lite 3 for mobile phones has been out for quite some time now and there are smartphones that support it.

Flash Light doesn't count. ;-)

It has universally been dismissed by developers as a really bad Flash substitute and will be abandoned by Adobe as soon as Flash 10.1 ships, if ever.

Well, it was first due out in early 2009, then late 2009. then early 2010. and now late 2010. so, yeah, if ever. I think it will eventually come out, and probably could have by now, but once it hits the streets and people realize that Flash apps just do not work on a hand held device, then what? All there will be is all those wonderful Flash based ads dancing across your screen. Man, that'll be so cool.

Then all the app developers will have to redesign all their apps to work on a touch device, THEN they'll start to question the wisdom of developing in Flash at all.

My eyes are open. I've had Blackberries and Motorola phones. Trust me, I know the difference. And if you don't like your iPhone, there are several alternatives out there from some very reputable phone makers. Buy one, then you can create a thread and I can stop in occasionally and drop insults at you guys for simply making a choice and trying to help people that have questions.

I actually won an iPad, just paid taxes on it... am I bragging? Yes, but I'll tell you where and you can still win one. Anyway, I got it on Wednesday, and the wife and I love it! Can't wait to show customer's pictures on it. I thought about getting a 3G, but we both have iPhones so I did not want to pay an additional $30 to ATT when we are already paying $60. But it would be nice to have. SmugMug app is great if you have a smugmug account. I can meet a customer at Panera or something and have access all of their images, yeah could just go to the website, but the scroll through the image feature on the app is much better than the website. Netflix unlimited and ABC's APP stream movies and TV shows... Would be great for the Kids, but I don't let them touch my $500 toy, I mean business tool.

I wish they would have supported flash. My website's galleries are all flash based. Flash may be going away, but really how hard would it have been to support it. It seems more like a case of them being pissed at Adobe or thinking it my cause people to download less apps. I can understand the iPhone or iPad touch not having them, but the iPad should have... :-( Outside of that... I'm very very very happy. That's not a big enough of a deal to tell someone not to purchase.

123 RF, Check out week 4 winner list!!!

Edited to add the site that I won the iPad on...

Just got this. Maybe this will explain the no flash issue.

That of course is Steve Job's reasoning. Bottom line, both Adobe and Apple are like the same ends of a magnet. It only works if one is open source but they are both proprietary wanting to control everything. If money didn't get in the way the internet would be completely open source by now and wouldn't have half the problems.

ETA: Before I get jumped on, that last part doesn't have anything to do with Apple rather Microsoft.

Are HTML5, CSS and JavaScript and H.264 video not all open-source and viable alternatives to the Adobe-proprietary Flash?

They are but there are no alternatives to the iPhone/iPad OS unless the device is jailbroken. Besides if Steve Jobs was interested in a free and open development environment he wouldn't shackle every developer into using the App Store just to sell their software. But hey setting yourself up as a middle man everyone must use is a heck of a business plan.

I see the concern from a pure financial p.o.v. (especially with regards to developers), but I also see clear benefits for the integrity and quality of integrated products, which, after all, is the one thing Apple has over its competitors. As a user, I want to continue to receive the best products, of course, and not end up at the receiving end of processes that have compromised quality over competitive or regulatory considerations alone.

Apple does have one very good reason to control everything through the App Store... their security model relies upon it. If they allow any application, they expose themselves to malicious apps. If they control applications by vetting them prior to posting in the Apps Store, they can avoid malware, viruses, etc.
There have been instances of smart phone applications written as phishing tools, where the application gathers personal data under the guise of being a useful tool. For instance, customers think they are installing a tool to let them interact with their bank, when in reality all it is doing was collecting their personal information (this actually happened to some credit union customers in California).
