This is mostly a stay home toy, is it not? I can't see people bringing these to public gatherings. Or am I wrong? Apart from it being used as a work tool.

I've already done it several times. Best photo presentation tool ever.

+1

This is how I now show my portfolio.

Likewise. The iPad has no peer for photo portfolios. It's like a thin, high-res digital photo frame that you hold in your hands for a personal viewing experience with options for transitions, music, zooming, etc. The black bezel serves as a perfect matting, and you can easily rotate it to maximize landscape or portrait images (cumbersome on a laptop).

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Send me yours while you wait for the 3g one. :)

So it sounds like you are using some presentation app. Keynote or something else? I just use the photo gallery and let people swipe through the photos.

Told you nothing. Told others elsewhere that it was a "giant iPod Touch", which seemed to be unintentionally confirmed by your calling the touch an "iPad Touch" (as opposed to an "iPod Touch", the real name). I was trying to be funny, but I am usually impaired in that regard.

Understood; what I meant to say is that I have an iPAD and an iPOD Touch. Yes, they are very similar in function, yet very different in form. Both work well for me and I am delighted to have them both.

OK, just found another great use for the iPad tonight. My daughter needed to record a video presentation for school. She had written her script but not memorized it. Got online and found a teleprompter app for the iPad. Could control font size, speed, etc. In two takes we got a great video of her presentation.

I'm doing an instructional DVD next month and have been concerned about learning all my lines. Now probably just going to use this app instead.

Interesting article about the Camera Connector kit.

Apparently, you can use the USB Camera Connector for other USB devices like USB keyboards, I guy in the forum said you can use a CF Card reader with it, too.

Plus, the Photo app supports RAW images.

Why didn't they just add a USB port to the iPad to begin with? These add ons that may or may not be compatible seem a lousy way to go about it for a company to touts itself as user friendly and high end. I still think they missed the mark here.

Until this thing has usb, multitasking and a $30 or less unlimited internet connection....I'm not sold.

The real breakthrough would be to have the full function of a good notebook computer in the same thin size of the ipad.

Multitasking will come in the next OS release, unlimited internet is $30, 250mb for $15, if using a USB adaptor is a deal killer then, oh well.

Seems like people want this device to do everything a full fledged computer does. It's not nor was it designed to be a full computer.

Maybe people expect it to be magic because, well, it's because it's been hyped as, and I quote, "magic."
Surprise?

USB port = magic?

Well, you seem to think that's an excessive demand for a 1st gen product, so you tell me. I think it's should be expected, personally.
All I'm saying is this thing was so hyped Apple screwed itself on the expectations it generated, especially when it came out with a device which, for all intents and purposes, was put out lacking features they purportedly have the ability to develop and implement. Why did they do it? So they could get people to repeat buy? Who knows, but it leaves a sour taste in the consumer's mouth.

1st, let me say, if you don't want one, don't buy one. It really doesn't matter to me.

2nd, in the 90s, when Apple did away with the floppy drive, everyone was up in arms about that. Miss your floppy drive?

3rd, the dock port can handle USB and several other connections. Why complicate the issue with multiple ports that do the same thing?

4th, as for screwing themselves, Apple had to delay the European launch of the iPad because the US demand was significantly higher than expected.

5th, I don't think the device is perfect, but it is an outstanding start. It is on the heavy side for something you want to treat like a handheld device, I really want a printing solution (supposedly in the next OS release) , and I would like to transfer files more easily. I just got back from a trip to France, extended due to the volcano ash thing, I am so glad I had the iPad with me. I was able to read 3 books, watch a few movies, keep up with the news on the travel situation, answer email, check flight status, vote in DPC challenges, etc.

6th, the expectations were more media and rumor mill driven. You have to keep a reality compass with upcoming Apple products. However, my expectations have been exceeded, but then I didn't expect it to a computer replacement.

Your mileage may very.

I had a chance to play with one for a few minutes. I also went to the photo store yesterday (and bought my wife a new 550D) and the store keeper used an iPad to control their stock levels. I'm sold!

Going to Florida in less than 3 weeks for a conference and won't come home until I have one in my suit case.

I'm not intending to say it isn't useful for some people. I'm sure it can be. And I should have clarified my "screwing" comment by explaining I meant regarding criticisms. It's pretty audacious to say your product is magic. To me, the issue is that it isn't a computer replacement, and it isn't a phone really. It's in a nether region between both that simply creates another device category instead of simplifying things. Now you need to carry your macbook and ipad? Why would anybody do that? Keep in mind you're speaking to somebody who loves new gadgets and accepts moderate redundancy. It's just frustrating to me.
Regarding sales, people will buy anything new. Remember the Furby? Novelty sells, regardless.
If you're happy with it, cool, I'm glad.
I'm fine with things evolving and changing too, but making every consumer buy an overpriced (Apple accessories are outrageously priced for what they are, across the board) accessory just to get functionality most expect is sorta annoying.
I've never thought being a 1st gen user has brought any good things to the table, and I'm not saying the future iterations won't be awesome and actually live up to the bar that the company set for itself, but right now I don't think it does.

And I wouldn't buy the (non-Apple) substitutes, if someone paid me. There you have it. McDonald vs. fresh fruit.
