yes. good. I second proposed rule #15

I'll vote for it if we ammend it to replace rasberry with "wet willy" or wedgie - either one.

Hmmm, requires additional facilities, which means either opening up the SC Executive Washroom to the public, or raising fees to pay for a DPC members toilet. I don't think we can get bipartisan support for either.

I think it would be silly for Don to leave after all of the stuff that has been learned over the last 24h. Even when the stats presented by SC show a most unusual pattern, I suspect most of us that have taken the time to analize the situation have concluded that such unusual pattern is the result of his unusual taste and not an intention to boost pointy's chances of getting a ribbon as it was very clear (most of the time) that a ribbon would be impossible no matter what. So, as far as I (and I hope most of us) am (are) concerned he has been exonerated in the court of public opinion. Whether or not the SC decides to exonerate him should be irrelevant. Assuming they stick to the suspension, I would suggest that upon returning Don resumes what he feels is his honest way of voting without any fears. So, I propose this party be turned from a 'good bye' party into a 'stick around party' , that is provided Don agrees, of course.

A serious question for a moment here.

If Post does decide to leave after all that he/they have said, I vote that he picks a replacement for the PS Awards

I am saying this , as we all know that the PS awards are something that we all love and want to learn from. I think it would be a crying shame to just let it lapse when it really is a part of DPC.

Serious question time over, back to drinking!

Wow,,,way off base. You compare jjbeguin to the abstract images of today? You should had used Ursula, now that's some awesome abstract art that also wins ribbons.

Yet if there was a venue for Artistic, abstract type of images in a challenge I'd probably play. Again. if this wasn't my cup of tea I wouldn't impose my style, I'd move on.

You might want to brush up on your DPC history. jjbeguin was the perennial ribbon winner back in the day with his artistic and even abstract images. I'm sure glad he didn't take your advice and never signed up. What you fail to realize is when you allow anybody to sign up and participate, like what we do here, change is inevitable. It seems like what you want is to change DPC to something isn't, an exclusive club.

I do understand the catch-22 that individuals like Don are in...I also understand the between a rock and hard place the SC & Langdon are in when upholding/enforcing the principles of the site. It is my hope that when the heated debates - for that is what it is - subside that a resolution/compromise/solution will emerge from all of this. I have seen one major site before I joined here torn by upheaval of a 'improper' handling of a major issue. Now it did survive and the Admins there I believe learned from the mistakes in PR management but it left a lot of ol'timers with a taste worse than sewer water in their mouths. At least HERE everyone is talking *now* - some albet more loudly than others that borders on shouting but the communication lines ARE open. Unlike the other site where the Admins did not respond for more than a week - allowing things to fester worse...of course there are some who would say that what has occured in the past 24 hours is bad....but a phoenix rises from the ashes does it not?

So enough wall of words -

Now to Don's party - Don whether you end up leaving or you stay with us, your showing those of us who are open to seeing a different perspective to photography will and has left a lasting impression. Lifts glass *cheers*

In all seriousness read this please.

Then you will get the whole backstory for this comment..

Essentially I love the idea of an award for those images that are under-appreciated, however, in this case it's been represented as something it's really not. The posthumous award seems to be awarded based upon the criteria of meeting a specific style, what I would call dark and impressionistic photographic fine art, something that is to be appreciated for sure - as I'm a big fan of low key images and some of the work of these photographers.

With that being said, I have been known to favorite an image that I give a vote of 3 on, why? Because, although sometimes a very striking and artistic or technical image really grabs me, I still have to ask, "Why is this in this challenge?". The only challenge I've not considered this a major portion of my vote was in the fine art challenge, where I simply voted based upon visceral reaction, and maybe a few technicals..

So, why did I write all this text? Well, that's easier to explain:

I feel that we should encourage this type of art, not through what I feel is "Dilution" of the challenges, but rather with a regular and recurring challenge theme that encourages this type of shot.. Maybe we can call it "Artistic Interpretation of XXXXX" where XXXXX is the subject, ie cat or goat..

Seriously, I would love to have clearly defined challenges that welcomed this type of work (as I enjoy doing it and seeing it), I've just never loved the idea of very publicly rewarding going out of your way to walk against the flow, sometimes it's cool, but only if it's the work of someone doing it because they just felt like it, not a regular, ongoing, and very public contest.

Just my feelings on the subject.. Not that most will care, as I'm sure that I am seen as quite a green hand around here.

You might feel marginalized, but let me quote Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it is the only thing that ever has."

There may be something to this Don. Did you ever think that you may be scaring the masses that don't want a different thought process. Maybe people are starting to find out that eye candy isn't the only form of photography and some people feel you are the devil for changing that happy little world. For that reason alone Don, you should stay and finish the job and continue to be an inspiration to some of us. Does this kind of remind you of anything else going on these days??????

eta. you could go down in DPC history as it's great savior.

I understand where you are coming from Coryboehne

But also remember, there are more awards out there than the PS award undereye even BearMusic started one once etcetc.

I appreciated PS and his awards and his thoughts behind them as do/did other people

I think it is part of DPC and should carry on with or without him, whatever he decides.

Maybe fresh blood every year would be interesting, I dunno

I poked sarcasm at you a couple of times in comments and you smiled. Keep smiling. Unfortunately, DPC has P'd me off for a while now and that is why I do not even bother to vote any more. I almost made it to 100,000. But to heck with it. If you come into NYC, give me a shout and we can have some fun.

I vote for the "Port-a-Potty tip-over" ride. If the crime is extra-heinous, said Port-a-Potty will be filled to overflowing and tipped so that it lands on the door.

The term "wake" dates back to a time when medicine was more an art than a science, and you could never be sure a dead guy was really dead. So you'd party for a while and see if he wakes up.

Now, pass the chocolate champagne...

p.s. the most encouraging thing I've heard on the forums so far is that someone puts aside a water drop picture instead of entering it into a challenge, and that *I* might have actually had something to do with that... hallelujah!!

And, in the end I feel some or most of those foster friendly competition and encourages those who are on the fringe or just unique, if not ribbon winners, and let's them know that they too are appreciated by some.

Here is where I find a difference.. I feel that posthumous tended to award his awards based on style, without any regard for challenge topic, often that meant that he was rewarding people who were just entering genuinely creative entries, but alas, I feel he may have become a victim of his own success.. Once people started competing for his ribbons, it became a potentially disruptive process (No matter how mild or severe), and that was cemented by posthumous's adherence to his aesthetic values, values that led him to award his award with complete disregard for the challenge topic that it appeared in.

Now, I do appreciate that you have a very real right to disagree, I just hope you really do understand what it is that I am concerned about.

As for that, very well done, as I know your views have affected me, and it does seem they have had a very real effect on others as well.. This is a positive thing in my mind, so please don't confuse this subject with my comment above/below (wherever you have it set to show...), as I do approve of being vocal about your preferences and what you feel about art.

We just must be careful to influence others to think in new and creative ways, and to enter daring (but still ON TOPIC :) ) images.. What we must avoid is influencing their entries by inducing fear of mass rejection because their shot is eyecandy (something also to be appreciated.)

Remember please, always, with great power comes great responsibility, and you certainly wield a significant amount of power here, intentionally or not.

My best to you sir.
