The other day I learned how to hold a foamboard reflector in one hand and hold the camera and manually focus it in the other hand. A much needed skill I believe.

I submitted three entries today ... :-(

No, it's the other one, masochistic ... ... good thing I like the number four because I expect to see an awful lot of it in the near future ...

Here's hoping all three of your images score higher than 5's :)

Oh and Deb get ready for a flurry of potential Free Study choices to hit your inbox within 24 hours! :P

Whoa, too many smileys *resists urge to use another*

I always get the two mixed up, Paul.

And Andrew, send 'em on. Be happy to take a look! Just be aware I am apparently a cultist and a bad influence. Or something like that.

My free study has been in since the first week of the month. That's never a good sign. But it will be nice to see it again. Heck, what with early onset senility, it will be completely new to me when it pops up on my home page!

I've heard the angry grumblings and while I believe you are a heretical revolutionist I trust your opinions. I still don't understand why people got upset, but whatever I liked the idea and seeing something different is always good.

Went to watch the moon rise with Germaine this evening.

Read up on the Marquis de Sade and you'll never mix the two up again.

Hmmm... this could be a Freudian slip... maybe she really meant sadistic because you're forcing three entries on the masses at large? Shame on you, Deb... :P

She means a Freudian petticoat.

*wandering, sipping from flute of pink champagne*

Hey everyone, what's going on? Anything new? Been up to my eyeballs in sugaring, so I've been AWOL and falling behind on my critiquing. Will try to catch up after Easter Monday. Oh yeah trip to the dentist today. Yayyy.

Andrew, your post on manually focusing with one hand while holding a foamboard reflector in the other made me laugh. Now have a shutter releaese in one hand, with a reflector and a slave flash in the other hand. Lots of fun triggering the shutter release AND popping the slave at just the right angle so it bounces off the reflector! :-)

Frankly I think what I need to get next is a donkey to pack all our gear along on nature shoots in the hills, and then a trained octopus to help hold things! It's one thing to go scrambling up along a non-existent trail with a tripod in one hand, knapsack of gear on your back and camera bag on the other shoulder. Even more fun when you encounter steep slopes and/or slippery rocks at the same time. Ahhh!

Okay I need advice, My friend has asked for her birthday that I take a family photo of her family which is 19th people of the 19 there are three babies all under a year. Any thoughts on after looking at my lenes, which one to use. I would like to do outside but it will be midday, if not outside, I have nothing in the way of lights, or background material. No flashes except what is on camera. Also I'm not a really people taking person. So any thoughts besides you're screwed :~) would help.

My F'Arts entry was down to the wire, time-wise, and then my flippin' dial-up hosed me. So, now I'm ending up using that for my Free Study entry. Yesterday, I saw that the "Abstract Catalog" caused quite a stir with some people and now I'm just waiting for the pummeling that I imagine I'll be receiving from my "abstract" entry. Am I the only one in here that has ended up entering either a non-entry or an out-take from the F'Arts challenge, and what are your predictions for my chances of excelling in suckdom on this one?

Hey Rosemary - yes, go outside by all means unless you have an indoor venue with a REALLY big window. Try not to do midday sun directly - the shadow of a building maybe. You want to find a spot with good even light but not harsh. If it's cloudy that day, you're good. If you have to shoot in sun, don't have it directly behind you because it makes people squint. One side or the other is better. As for lenses, I'd suggest the wide end of your 24-105 - ie at 24. Take the 10-22, too, but beware that you'd not want it down much from 22 or the folks at the ends get rather short and fat. :-) Keep a pretty narrow aperture - 7.1 or so - so you get a deep depth of field and hopefully everyone more or less in focus. Get everyone arranged and take a few test shots while they're getting in place so you can check exposures, focus, etc. When you get everyone in place, tell them that they must be able to see you clearly in order for you to see them clearly. Once you shoot, shoot three or four rapid fire at a time. That's your best bet for getting everyone with their eyes open at the same time, and if you shoot rapidly like that and have one person that doesn't have open eyes but everyone else does, you can more easily cut and paste from one of the other frames - ie you hope no one really moves much.

Hopefully all that helps a little!

Good luck & have fun! They're calling for summer like weather here Saturday, hopefully you get the same.

My FS this month is a very recognizable subject, LOL, because I haven't shot anything else all month with the exception of a few challenge shots.

Wendy - sent you a pm. I hope we will see you again when this gets sorted. I know that I wouldn't want to play any more if I was in your shoes, but keep the door open.

Thanks. My husband says I'm over-reacting. But it's not fun right now. So I'm going to go over-react for awhile.
