Excellently done, especially for handheld. Even with a pan/tilt head (with levels), it's hard to get a perfectly horizontal pan action.

If you want more foreground or sky (or just higher resolution), remember that you can shoot with the camera in portrait orientation and still stitch them (change the orientation setting in AutoStitch), and also that you can take two or three rows of images zoomed in closer -- AutoStitch will work in two dimensions.

I note you list the shutter times as "various" -- usually when shooting panoramics for stitching you should shoot in manual mode at the same settings throughout, or you can get uncorrectable banding (especially across flat areas like a blue sky).

PS: This would be a great image for using the "Fake Miniature" technique, with the buildings near the shore in-focus.

"Hugin", a sourceforge free software project, is another program you may find interesting. It includes the capability of working with LDR images, among other things. Pretty nice for free!

Link for Hugin -- I haven't tried it myself, but I found it listed early-on in the Freebie Imaging Software thread. Didn't realize it was free, or that it was cross-platform (Mac/Windows) ...

I'm far from being an expert, but I found it really easy to just dive in and use. I tried a 360^ pano of my workshop, and it "pieced together" nicely. However, as you stated before, I wasn't hip to keeping the same aperature (for both exposure AND depth of field), so I got some funky results there. I'm confident that I could use it in a pinch with good results, though, just after using it once. (Especially for those of us that are watching our "gear budgets."(I hate that!))

In search of guidance for branches. Not going very far out on a limb with this one, but did shoot for it. Anyone want to help me choose?
03/14/2010 10:00:55 PM · #56
I'll take a look if you'd like, didn't get a chance to shoot what I had in mind so no entry today for me.

OK - thanks! Will send you a PM shortly.

I went out after class at 10 to shoot for Night Shot. FORGOT TRIPOD! I'm now a master of holding my breath and heartbeat for several seconds :P Thankfully found some wooden posts to use. I might have to go out again though tomorrow. I hope everyone else has enough common sense to bring their tripod with them haha

Actually I did!

You might consider checking with REI (or maybe other camera accessory suppliers) -- for about $15 I got a little mini-tripod somewhat like a Gorilla-Pod, but with rigid legs.

The version I got also includes a velcro strap arrangement which lets you secure it quite firmly to any handy post, rail, or similar architectural or natural element. You can also open a couple of legs and brace it against a flat surface (e.g partly open car window), or open all the way and use as a tabletop tripod -- I used mine for a flower time-lapse series. It fits in the bottom compartment of my camera case.

I have something sort of like that, nowhere near as good or easy to use however. Really wish I had remembered that tripod though, blah

One of life's great milestones has been achieved. I just got word that my grandson peed in the potty!! WOO-HOOOO!!! (Not in the one that I showed in my last post.) Here he is in all his bashful glory, pre-celebrating the wonderful event.

Bonus - I have a model who actually asks to have his picture taken.

Bad boy! Bad! Must be spanked by Mistress Snaffles!

I'm now a master of holding my breath and heartbeat for several seconds :P

That does help, learning how to turn yourself into a tripod, but still likely to get camera shake, anything under 1/15 or so is a writeoff in my experience.

Thankfully found some wooden posts to use. I might have to go out again though tomorrow. I hope everyone else has enough common sense to bring their tripod with them haha

At least you learned! ;-)

Tripods can be a pain in the whatsit, I fully agree. I am not a tripod person, whereas Ryan and his Manfrotto are all but inseparable.

But I would much rather have the Giotto with me, and not need to use it, than not have it with me and spend the rest of the shoot kicking myself for not having packed it along. So I lug it along, not using it 97% of the time, but oh so glad for the 3% of the time that I had it and needed it!

Sigh, I believe this will be the first week since signing up here that I won't be submitting to the open challenge. My night shot (the only night I was able to do anything) didn't come out as planned and despite my searching I was unable to find much in the way of Bizarre structures. Oh well.
03/16/2010 06:07:25 PM · #68
Yeah, I got nuttin too! My daughter found a bizarre house but neglected to tell me where it was. And I'm really bad at night shots.

I know I was kind of bummed I forgot it :( but I'm entering an entry that was not what I set out to shoot but still kind of cool. I think I'll wait to post my outtake because you might be able to guess my entry from it. I also have a handheld 3 sec that turned out wonderful(ly blurry)!

Sounds interesting, Andrew, and that's the Team Suck spirit! Suck on! ;-)

ETA: OMG did I really write that? Yes I did...am I going to edit it out?...No! (unless asked nicely) :-)

Well I talked myself into entering anyway. This shot will bomb but I still think it is interesting and my reasons for submitting are in the description. Can't say now or it could point to my shot. I am predicting a sub 4 finish with this but am hoping for several cool comments.

I did the same thing.Prolly not going to fly for majority of DPC crowd, but I had fun doing it. It was an "I have an idea...", once-and-done'r, but I was happy with the shot.

Good luck all!
