My wife and I will be traveling to the US soon. I bought a Tamrac Expedition 7x and want to know if anyone has had a problem with the new baggage rules on airlines. We'll be flying on Delta which allows a total of 45" for a carry-on. The Bag meets this requirement with a measurement of 13" x 13.5" x 19.5". They also say it should easily fit in the box they always have at check-in which measures 22"x14"x9". Tamrac says on their website that it's good to go for a carry-on, but one never knows when it comes to airlines. Has anyone traveled with one of these bags recently?

I travel fairly extensively on Delta in the US and often carry my camera and extra lenses with me in a Lowepro bag. I have never encountered a question taking the bag through security. In fact, I have never been asked to open the bag when it went through the screening machine.

Really, you have never been asked to open the bag... goodness, can't say I have ever had that kind of luck. Every single time I have travelled on an aircraft in North America or Europe I was asked to open my bag, take out the camera and on occasion asked to take a photo and show the security personnel the image.

On my last two trips the security people even swabbed my equipment to see if it had residues of I know not what.

To answer your question, I can't say that I know as I do not own that particular bag.

I often fly (in the US) with my two cameras and a video camera. I have never had a problem. The equipment goes thru the scan (so far) with the greatest of ease.
Best of luck.

David, I have nearly the same bag and flew back from Germany with it in January - no problem.

I think I might take my laptop out of it though. It sits a bit high with it in. With the Expedition 7x i wish you could take the waist strap off.

I've taken my camera bag a few times and had my laptop in it's sleeve in my (tiny) purse, lol. They will ask you to take your laptop out and put it in it's own bucket.
Have had no problems with carrying on camera and lenses (with a tripod strapped to the bottom of my Tamrac bag and my husband carrying on my monopod! - but you can't have a fingernail file.)

I have never tried the tripod - I suspect it is too big and too heavy. The gorillapod is no problem, though.

I bought one that I can take apart (take the head off) and put in my checked baggage. There have been no problems traveling with it, and so far, I have never had occasion to need it while in the airplane.
On one trip, where I went without it, I hit the local thrift stores and found one the second day. I just left it with my friends that lived there at the end of the trip.

When I flew to Hawaii a few weeks ago, they EMPTIED the bag. Every single item was examined. They also swabbed my hands and found something ( who knows what?). I then had to go through an "interview" with a supervisor. And I got frisked...thoroughly. On the way home? Far different experience...

My tripod btw doesn't fit in my suitcase so it definitely wouldn't fit in my carry-on. I used my 60 liter backpack so I could bring it.

Just give yourself extra time. I think we got there about 3 hours before our departure time.

I fly a couple times a year. It's been a few years since I have been asked to physically open my camera bag. I've had it swabbed within the last couple of years. The last trip, they made more of a deal with the water for the baby's formula than any of my gear.

Recent airports: Fort Lauderdale, Philadelphia, LAX, Rochester.

The swabs are part of a test for explosive residue. Any such residue will stick to the swab and be detected by the machine that analyzes them.

Key learnings: If you go to the shooting range earlier in the day, shower and change your clothes before going to the airport. Saves lots of time in "interviews".

This month I have taken my camera to both Hawaii and San Diego - no problems in security. Not even asked to open. Their machines viewed it all and we were good to go. You'll be fine - have fun on your trip!

I'm not really worried about them checking anything, it's just the size of the bag. I want to take my tripod in the outside carrier but I think that wouldn't fly. So I'll just take the head off, put it in the bag, and put the tripod in my checked bag.
