It's weird, but what I ended up entering was an image that did, in fact, speak to me. It told me about where I've been going, and what I see when I just cut loose, go somewhere, and walk my camera.

I hear people talking all the time whether it's a group of photographers, or the speaker in a talk/seminar about how to compose and shoot, and almost without exception, the phrase "Visualize what you're going to shoot." comes up.

ALL of my best work seems to be the result of my random, and delighted discoveries from where I venture forth into the very world I live. The shot I ended up entering is a perfect view of one of my random & delighted discoveries.

It's not turning in a fabulous score, but the comments I've gotten please me immensely.

Glad so many of you are happy. But for one precious and only comment, I cannot console myself that this would do worse in a regular challenge ....

Me neither. As if my score wasn't bad enough, someone just lowered their vote on my pitiful shot. :-(

But Nuzzer, aren't you the flippant dispenser of 1 votes that you SAY will get scrubbed in the end, but which in the meantime caused so much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth?

Well they should get scrubbed and if I was trying annoy people I'd not have mentioned it in the thread. By mentioning it in this thread at least people can know that one of those 1's should get scrubbed - if they don't then the scrubber isn't doing a good job now is it. If you can think of a better way for me to withdraw my votes I'd love to hear it.

I don't think you can withdraw votes but you can change them. You have a whole week to decide on what you want to do. Maybe there will be pictures that will get better over time. Make some comments.

That's my view exactly. my image was taken from just walking around my town all day Saturday and taking random shots that just interested me. I usually will just take a bunch of shots and not delete any. When I get home I load them up and usually find things that I didn't even originally see when taking them. I get the most joy out of that fact. Just putting a blur on a landscape or flower doesn't make it art. Most the images that I have I don't even put on DPC for this reason because it usually just get's hammered by the voter's who only want to see typical images. I can understand it though. We want pretty and as a matter of fact the prints I sell most often or of "pretty" scene's. The fact of the matter is there is a difference between art that the masses would want to buy and put on there wall and art that people like but not admit that they like for fear of being different.

I love the following images but they will never make great scores on DPC so people refrain from posting them on here. It's a very sad but true fact. It would be nice to have some more obvious outside the box challenges.

I keep thinking I'm going to go vote but then I can't decide what I should base my vote on.
I have criteria that I usually use when voting but this challenge is different. I think. Or is it?
I suspect that many will say I should just ask myself if I like the image. I can do that but.... but... but... I'm afraid my average score will be low if I do that. Usually I give credit for an image that I might not necessarily care for but that someone has obviously tried hard to have meet the challenge, be technically perfect, or has some humor or other merits. But this challenge is about fine art. Should I vote solely on how creative I think a photo is? I don't think, out of fairness, I can do that either. This challenge is important - and I think (hope) meant to encourage people to try and show us something that might be a little out of their realm of ordinariness. This is round one. It might take some people more than one try, maybe several, to let their hair down but it's important that they are stepping up to the plate and giving it a go - I don't want to discourage that.
Any thoughts?

i asked myself why some people spend hours looking at art in the art galleries or museum. what satisfaction do they get? then i decided for this challenge to just do that. right now its worth it.. i get a better appreciation of the effort, creativity and hard work in the photos from this challenge. so far i've voted on 1/3 of the images and it took me almost 2 hours to just do that.. i find myself enjoying this challenge a lot

Then in my opinion, this whole project has been 100% worth it. Wayverycool!

Yes, taking the time... Now we are getting somewhere.

Penny, there is no shame in giving low votes. People love to complain.

Nuzzer, I was pulling your leg. (I am always looking for an opportunity to say "weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth").

I went for weird. It was too weird for Posthumous.

I wasn't expecting that, but I'll take it as a win :)

Don't take my comment too literally. I probably loved it.

Holy Smokes, people. Way to go. Push that artistic envelope!! I haven't enjoyed voting like this in a long time. No entry my self, but for the most part... BRAVO!

I'm quite pleased with the outburst of enthusiasm you had for my entry as indicated by your comment.

I've had a couple comments like that and I'm quite surprised how much more thrilled I am by the way this challenge is going than about the last half dozen where I've had a bizarre run of high scores.

Look, for the most part, in this site at least, we tend to take pictures that make people happy, see? Pretty pictures. There's a subset of us that's heavily into marketability as well, but that's also a mass-appeal thing. So0 when this "fine arts" challenge came along, there's a natural tendency for people to think, "Well, if all our pretty pictures are NOT fine art, then bleak and miserable must be the way to go!" I think that's what's happening.

And the modern art world actually tends to reflect that; we more or less live in a time of post-apocalyptic art, is the way I see it.

BTW, my image appears to be B/W but it actually isn't; no desaturation whatsoever, so there :-)

R.

I'm happy to state that I am no artist, so I saw this as an opportunity to simply have a go at producing somthing, that as you say didn't necessarily have mass appeal but at the same time I would be happy to put on my wall at home.
I hope this approach doesn't offend any of the true artists out there.

I looked back in the thread but couldn't find the answer.

Will the juried results be announced along with the regular results, right after rollover?

We decided to wait until Monday afternoon/evening, to let the front-pagers bask in their glory for a while.

Not at all, just wanted to know if I should wait up to see who did win.

Glad to hear that. The front page winner's should get to hold there trophies high first. Can't wait to see both results. All of us finishing lower than they would like (present company included) still have a chance at something right............

From the outset, I've been more interested in seeing the panel's choices.......8>)
