Mine's being pummeled with 'what is this?!' I'm so tempted to post the answer in a forum topic line...wonder what it would do to the score. So far the score is 5+ and falling steadily. I guess abstract photography is definitely not the same as abstract painting. I didn't expect it to score well...but also didn't anticipate all of the 'what is this' comments. I'm glad I submitted this one anyway...it's pretty interesting to see people's reactions.

Off to hold my tongue until Sunday...good thing I have big plans for the rest of the week. Happy 4th to my fellow Americans!

I think that abstracts do well on an individual basis. Some people thrive on the abstract... some don't. Those who don't, like myself, are usually at a loss. I have been trying to enlighten myself to the concepts of abstracts lately though. I am not as tough on them as I used to be.

My problem is that I like to know what I'm looking at. I am currently in a stage where if the abstract is a good quality image, I usually am able to work with it. If I think the image quality is poor, I'm less likely to be happy. I sometimes think 'abstract' is used for an excuse rather than intentionally, but i'm a pessimist :)

You lost me there. Maybe it's too abstract for me...lol. I should understand this because I'm a pessimist too. I also usually don't care for abstracts...occasionally, I'll see one that I love...that I can't stop looking at because it 'speaks to me.' Anyway, mind re-stating this point? :)

I don't know much about abstracts, but I think it's pretty funny how the title of this thread on the homepage reads "RE: Just curious...how are your abs".

My abs could probably use a few extra crunches, but they're really okay, I think ;-)

My abstract isn't doing very well. Almost all of my 9 comments are positive and even list scores in the 7's and 8's, but my average is around 5. I expected it to be 3 though, so I'm not complaining. I submitted b/c my parents really liked the shot and I wanted to participate in the challenge.

Man, I am at 5.3 with a straight up shot, and I am very happy. You guys have to remeber that winner are usually in the 6-8 range.

The only thing that bumbs me out is that I topped out at 5.7, and I thought I would probably finish around there.

All of us here are just preaching to the choir. A lot of the votes you're talking about come from people who don't post on these forums. Not only are the abstracts being hammered (which by the way I mostly liked and scored high), it's the shots that don't have a glass window in front of them or are otherwise obvious. Photos that make people think tend to not do well here.

Not so good Topping out at 4.93 with 9 comments 8 good and one that just says "Whatever"! Although I started high 5.8 Oh well wait for Sunday! The fear challenge maybe I should take a pic of someone approaching a car at a traffic light, that causes fear in my country as we have a high rate of highjacking and smashing of windows at stops to steal anything visible.

I personally love abstracts. Abstracts are all about lines, shapes, and colors. They are very moody and you have to be intune with that mood to really like a that picture. I like alot of the abstracts on here but there a few that I don't care for. One thing I find necessary in an abstract is to at least have some point in focus. I've seen a few abstracts where the entire photo just has a hazy, soft blur to it and I don't like looking at it.

Would the shot of the flag reflected in the rain drops be considered an abstract? To me, most photos in this challenge are abstracts.

ahhh, so is this a yes or a no? It seems to me most photos this week could be called abstract.

A work of art that relies on structure and compositional elements to convey meaning and emotion is part of the abstract school even when the image is realistic. Take for example that famous fashon photo of a woman in a black gown. He posed her in a way that turned the gown into a black orchid (or lilly I forget). I would concider this an abstract because the subject was not the woman or the dress it was the black and white shape. The best of the shadow images submitted here worked because the underlieing abstract construction was very strong. To me even the picture of the glass with a pencil in it is an abstract because the subject is not the pencil or the glass it is the shapes, colors, lines, and spaces created by these objects which is the subject.
I was taught that a good abstract obeys all the rules of compostion the masters used to teach --balance rhythem emphasis etc. With that in mind I have no touble judging this week's work. aelith

I have a picture of an aloe type plant on my website that I consider to be abstract. It was taken from directly above the plant, in black and white, and is more of a study of form than a photo of a plant.

The cellular fireworks? *grin*. fine shot. aelith

Well I would say yes it is abstract but the definition throws in "through nontraditional and usually nonrepresentational means" and the flags sort of shoot that down.
