I find that sometimes I spend around 5% of the image resolution by adding a border.

It would nice if we could select (at submission time) the size and color of an outer frame from a few preset options.

I've browsed the forum and there is a a tendency to think that borders hurt voting. I find it a bit puzzling because I have the tendency to prefer the photos framed.

Anyone else would like the border option?

I second this.

For some reason some people on DPC detest borders with the sort of loathing usually reserved for scary peodofille clowns. And heavily mark down accordingly. I can't quite get it myself. Some borders are pretty hideous and take away from the shot sure, but a small tasteful black or white border i think is fine and can present the image in a better light.

I enjoy borders. But this site kind of beat it out of me, I don't do it much anymore, unless I'm going for a Brown. I think any kind of PP that can be 'seen,' including a border, is looked upon here as a (pathetic, useless) attempt to improve or distract from bad technicals.

Yet, curiously, the vignette effect is approved.

I think it would be fun to put a small skinny white border around your photo is you're interested in unrestrained comments, & a skinny black border if not, or if you plant to send a retaliatory PM.

A border option at time of submission would be nice, but why? Add whatever border you want in your choice of editing software during processing. Now if the site could offer some Auto-Kickass-HDR or Spectacular-Coastline-Overlay upon submission, I'd be for that. ;-)

Some borders can hurt an images score with some voters, but I don't find that voters attack borders unless they are overwhelming the photo or just plain obnoxious. I like that the photographers' choice of border is part of what is being judged by voters. Along with a good title and challenge relevance, it's the whole presentation that matters to me anyway.

I think he wants the border as a bonus, with no hit to the 800px and 300kb limit.

Exactly! Some kind of html framing or overlay. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in the first post.

800px was chosen not as a bonus, but for viewing ability. It fits well on 1680x1050 (standard 16:10 resolution a couple years ago) and 1280x1024 (standard 5:4 resolution). Adding a 100px border on each side? Why not just make the challenge images bigger by 100px on each side and make them 1000x1000? Again, it's about viewing ability.

I suggested a few presets regarding size and colors.
I think 100px is probably overkill, but you could always play with a framing border by adding another to your JPG.
