If Langdon wishes to employ this selective watermarking strategy on a "Go Forward" basis, then fine. As long as all images prior to Feb 10 are watermarked that would be the decent thing to do. As I have chosen to be a "Non-Member", I have no way of watermarking my legacy pictures and certainly will not pay $25.00 solely to do so. All legacy images, prior to this change, should be watermarked and this policy should only apply to challenge entries from this point forward. If watermarking is to be used as a marketing tool, that should be made clear at time of submission so those who are not eligible are clear they are not protected. Otherwise, watermark all my legacy photos and I'll stand down.

If I could watermark them myself, I would, but that requires renewing my membership and I am not prepared to do so. If not, please remove my images altogether and I'll bid you adieu.

All I've got to say is I hate it.....can't stand looking at some of the beautiful photos and seeing an ugly watermark right across the middle....totally ruins the photo for me and I'll probably be removing those photos from my favourites. Hate it.

This is a good suggestion AND good advice all in one. :)

Yawn.

Watermarking is basically RUINING the photo to discourage it's theft. Making something un-theft-worthy.

You are PROTECTED the moment you take the photo. Copyright laws are enforceable internationally I believe. Perhaps museums should put plexiglass over all the artwork with a "watermark" across the front to prevent photos and other copies.

We had a vote. Everyone had a chance to vote. The voting process decided that most were in favor of water marking. It is (mostly) a democratic world so I guess watermarks it is. I really see no point in starting that discussion now.

Personally I don't care either way.

The watermarking issue has been discussed ad nauseum. Water under the bridge. This has to do with implementation so you can wake up again. ;-)

I was responding *TO* the topic at hand, which if you weren't so highly medicated, you'd have realized. :)

It's a non-issue is the basic premise. All images here are protected (that was the point you missed). Forcing watermarking prior to a certain date adds NO PROTECTION at all except to render the image non-theft-worthy. It's not decent or indecent for it to remain optional for all images, denied to non-members, or whatever other combination Langdon wants to employ.

It will (as we've seen) increase the whine-factor of a few members. And that may grate on Langdon's nerves so much he appeases them.

My meds still allow me to make sentences that do no contradict themselves. Want some? lol

Watermark on this one breaks the calm mood and I cannot keep my eye of the watermark crossing the border. Irritates me hugely.

Seriously? Center copyright totally brakes this photo.

This opacity works much better.

Seriously eff's the image up.

No.....

Ye gods

The corner ones I can live with, but the centered ones are crap.

The more I see, the more I hate the centered watermark. Can we have a filter so I don't have to look at those images?

I suggest you support your claim with facts. Nothing in my sentence was contradictory at all.

Destruction of the image in the name of protecting the image is not additional protection.

Once again - supported. My meds do work. Read slower this time. Bwahahaha

OK, before this gets out of hand, let's try to restrict posts to opinions on the feature itself, and not opinions of each other or each other's opinions or interpretations or medical conditions. This is not a Rant thread. Thank you.

Just to point, while you may not like it, it is the photog's preference so your issue would be him/her. A nicely worded PM letting your opinion be known may help some of them reconsider the placement. Or not.

Users ... or members shouldn't be allowed to see pictures without watermark?

hallucinogens you're on it appears.

My statement stands completely accurate.

No additional protection is added. None.

that is the whole point of watermarking no? if it doesn't stick out and be in the way then it doesn't serve it's purpose

the corner ones are simply advertising, they can be cropped out

I would take the above request and ditto-ation as similar requests of the site itself, especially since this is a new feature and this thread is for feedback.

Consider this my request for Langdon to reconsider the center-placement option altogether, or to give an option to not see center-placed-watermarked photos.

if your quote unquote watermark is on the edge, your doing it wrong .. imo

I turned all mine back off. Adds nothing.

Thanks langdon.

Couple of things to note:

1. when I choose 'high Opacity' (white) it is still very transparent, having 'high' to mean not transparent at all may be a better option

2. there seems to be a small bug with the 'hide red border' - it doesn't 'remember' your selection if you go back and change the watermark setting, you have to keep checking that

Whether people use this site feature or not, it is now there for them to use. I don't see this as a marketing tool at all, but a feature created and implemented based on requests by many users of the community. There may be some older members (Registered Users (or closed accounts)) that left because they didn't like NOT having a feature like this, having it available to them allows them to still have some control over their images, if they want.

I don't see why it shouldn't be made available to anyone who places/has placed an image (including portfolio images by the way) on the site (unless of course it is a coding issue). However, perhaps the 'advanced features of the watermarking options, such as placement, could be restricted to paying members, but still have the basic options (with black or white) to all users. If someone wants to 'steal' an image, it won't be that hard to clone out the watermark, but it will mean some work for them to do so, so may be a deterrent until technology brings something better. Of course, a 'notification email' would be a good idea announcing the feature, otherwise many would never even know of the change.

It is not a big deal, it is just a new feature on the image editing page of the site. I'd rather langdon put energy and time into other areas, but I appreciate that some people have valid reasons for wanting and requesting this feature and he is trying to cater to your 'needs' with this - he's done it for you and from what I've read so far, not that many are showing any appreciation.

Trial it if necessary - or just don't use the feature. Nothing is being forced upon you and even if it was, the 'site' can do what it likes.

I am pleased to announce that our watermarking solution is now available. There are some basic things that interested users should know about the system:

Watermarks can only be applied to challenge entries after the related challenge is out of voting. Watermarks are currently limited to black or white text ("© username.dpchallenge.com") written out horizontally in a set size with a certain degree of transparency. Watermarking is an opt-in feature and disabled by default.

Automatic watermarking options are available at the top of your portfolio, accessible through My Home/My Portfolio. These options are limited to two colors (white or black), 3 levels of opacity (low, medium, or high), and 5 different positions (top-left, top-right, center, bottom-left, bottom-right). The options are saved as soon as you select them and will apply to future entries. You can use the bulk apply link after changing your options to apply a particular configuration to all of your past entries.

You can override the automatic settings by clicking on a challenge entry from your portfolio and using the photo-specific watermark options link from there (halfway down). This override will allow you full control over watermark placement and give you a decent idea of how your watermark will look before applying it.

Finally, watermarking is only available to Members. Should your membership lapse, your watermarks will not be removed, however future entries will simply not be automatically watermarked.
