I think we may have great examples with Gregory Crewdson.

And Jeff Wall!!

What do you think?

Yeah, I love his work -- and so easy to emulate! (That's a joke, because he works with a full crew as if on a movie set).

To me that's pretty borderline work as I define FA for myself. I wouldn't necessarily vote it low BUT it's kinda like he's taking photo's of subjects and not really creating one. Personally, I'm looking for images that are objects on the whole...as a guideline (not a rule). Straight portrayals of anything..whether we're talking about people, flowers, animals etc. would fall flat to my eye. BUT you can all decide for yourselves...

So, the flowers that are posted on the previous page don't work for me either. I'm looking for something more imaginative, camera oriented creativity and less in terms of pre or post production.

Because of those great lights? Just guessing..

is it too simplistic to say that fine art photography is more at achieving the emotion in the shot rather than the technicals?

or am I completely and totally off-base?

I will have more chances on that one, if you'r right. :P
what do you think about my PB for this challenge?
03/01/2010 02:35:59 PM · #182
There are plenty of technicals involved BUT probably a different set of values. So, where commercial photography might have a set of values that are considered virtuous...clarity/sharpness, accurate colors (like in a car ad), cropping the image so it is identifiable etc. a different set of each, could be applied in this type of work to achieve a different set of goals.

Here, the technicals can be plentiful but might draw more on the viewers imagination.

I predict that landscapes will dominate the front page of the challenge...& the juried awards too.

No. The jury will be making its choices from amongst all the images entered.

Okay, that makes sense. What if it was approached with the attitude that "technicals" were optional. If able to be achieved, fine, but if there has to be a choice between emotive and technical, the photographer should err on the side of emotive?
03/01/2010 04:18:48 PM · #187
And could we find a way to remove anyone who has a voting average of 3 or less from being able to participate in the voting process? This would stop all of the trolls from holding fine art to the same obnoxiously high standard they seem to hold every other challenge. I am all for high standards, but some people just seem to think everything sucks.

My point is that every images has technicals. Degrees of blur can be used and applied with great control and accuracy, as can degrees of noise or tilts etc. Doing it well and with reason is far harder than taking a sharp shot, imo.

Great artist uses them effectively and with purpose. Some people just chuck them around with no point whatsoever as we see in many Challenges. For example, in a Tilted Angle Challenge many entries have tilts but without any positive or intelligible benefit to the image.

I think everything sucks and vote kinda high for some odd reason. Go figure.

Well, this is a member's challenge, so only the paid members are voting, which helps a little in that regard. I think....

Will this be done during voting or after? I hope it's during.

Most of the snobs will be on the judging panel, so I don't think they're voting....

What if the reason for such a low average given is because they vote down DPC friendly images and vote the artsy stuff high?

Yup, during. We will be announcing our "winners" more or less concurrently with the official ribbon winners, though I suspect we may hold off for a day so as not to be seen as stealing the limelight from the popular vote. We haven't discussed that, but I'm sure we will :-) The main point is, we will finish our ranking before rollover, so it will be completely anonymous judging.

Do you think this would score better in this challenge than it did? or.... or or this which actually got a good score but I thought would bomb.
I'm having a hard time thinking about this challenge. Lots of fighting going back and forth in my head(which by the way is still on percocet and valium.).
Maybe I'm just over thinking it.

Nah. I'm overthinking it too. Probably won't enter, purely from exhaustion of trying to be honest with myself & somehow second-guess the trolls. Can't be done.

C'mon, c'mon! This isn't about second-guessing the trolls, or about trying to please anybody but yourself. Just reach inside of YOU and drag something out, without even thinking about how it'll score and/or who it'll appeal to.

It's not as hard as it sounds, and it feels good when you're finished :-)

Well if it's going to feel good when I'm finished, I'm in! :P

Exactly what I did for this challenge... I have no idea how my image will do (I hope well, at least if people like abstract stuff), but I love my image, and I really love that I used a $35 camera to shoot it. (terrible little P&S, Kodak Easyshare ZD710.. Takes about 2 pictures per minute.. wonderful noise, 10x zoom to make everything look terrible.. like I said, awesome!)

Thanks for the encouragement. Of course you are right. And history is replete with misunderstood artists, some of whom are remembered to this day. However I am not sure how I feel about offering up the fruits of my genius to the righteous voters to be smited with 1's. Fun for them, not so much fun for me. My average vote received is going steadily down, the longer I stay here, it's at 4.8 now. Pieu! Here are 3 of my favorites--look like FA to you?

. .

[eta] The juried part of it is interesting, though. Interesting enough to overcome my reluctance, I think.
