Been tossing the idea of fine art-ness around for some hours now and am leaning towards the idea that the term has become an antiquated label...the anti-craft term for those that want to elevate their own work somehow? If we are to pick terms/labels to use, I like non-traditional, uncommon, adventurous, progressive, inspired much more than "fine art" etc...but that may just be me...maybe not...

Wikipedia's entry illustrates the problem of defining fine art photography. They offer multiple definitions and cite sources that further muddy the waters, but offer no definitive replacement term.

Oddly, I vote no. Why? Everyone will spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about what Fine Art Photography is, and a landscape will win anyway.

That, and I'm in a crabby mood.

Haha, so true. I hope you don't mind that your crabbiness made me smile.

I agree with all of the last 3 posts (eta: except Debs lolol). I chose FA Photography for lack of anything better and I still can't think of anything better that doesn't open up the flood gates and pretty much, includes everything under the sun.

I agree with you all but am willing to roll the dice with the term.

"non-traditional, uncommon, adventurous, progressive, inspired..." are all good but don't really drive the point anywhere direct either. For example, I said "Take some risks this week and present a subject in a unique way..." which I like but still might not be understood by many.

I'd hope if there's 150 entries and somewhere around 225 votes there will be enough people that put in the effort to learn, paired with those who have some clear idea where FA generally stands to level things out in the end. Enough so, where we don't have an "eye-candy" winner, one would hope. I believe the voters likes and dislikes will be spread far and wide amongst the entries without much concentration on any particular images although a few images will undoubtedly garner a slight majority. Who knows...?

I'll bet people would stare and think about the images for a few seconds longer in this Challenge which would be a great victory in itself...

Ah, he's just paraphrasing Avedon: "The art of seeing is the beginning of art."

Don't give up. I think it's the words you're getting bogged down in. You're looking for a specific style, but I don't think FA really fits what you're looking for.

How about Artistic Interpretation?

this discussion is making a no-lose proposition sound like a no-win proposition. Who cares if different people interpret "fine art" differently? It'll still be a great challenge with a great variety of photographs.

100% agree. But I think Steve would agree that the discussion itself is an integral part of the process. Whenever you get people who usually don't discussing "art" and what it is, that's a definite plus, even if their various interpretations may seem borderline ludicrous. It all depends on where you're at, I think :-)

Can my cat enter a photo in this challenge? Does art need an artist?

Discussion is great. However it is a "no-lose" proposition and no matter how we word it we'll still wind up with an interesting set of images that will not be the usual norm for the site. I also don't believe a landscape, a frog, an eagle, a waterdrop or a tiger will win in the end.

The results might not be 100% what many of us would hope and for this type of thing, no matter where it's run, how it's worded...juried, whatever it should be interesting and I say we let the cards fall where they will. The results might very well piss me off but it will definitely bump the site into an interesting place for a few weeks...right or wrong?

No, your cat can't enter and I'll insist that that be specifically added to the descriptions wording! eta: Unless he's a paid member

How about running the challenge and then 'volunteer' :) Steve to put together a small jury to judge the entries and give out awards to the top 3,5,10 images? I'd be all for seeing the results from the voters placed against a juried ranking. Let's do it!

great suggestion Steve. would be very interesting to see how this oxymoronic excersize (populace judging a fine art competition) plays out.

BTW, recently finished Spider Awards photo competition gives a glimpse of a modern fine art photography world (only black and white, though): link
