Not sure if I have the guts to try it, but the 300D firmware hackers seem to have been working hard.

SlashDot article about it.

Anyone going to give it a try??

The first link I gave says the latest firmware gives you:

- ISO 3200
- Mirror lockup
- Left button selects focus modes
- FEC

I don't think it's physically possible for the 300D to have mirror lock-up. I think the firmware just opens the menus available in the 10D but there isn't actually the right buttons and stuff to use half of it.

Ok, gonna give this a try tonight. :-)

You can lock the mirror up for cleaning, but I take your point about buttons.

It's just very slow. I think it may very well be hosted in Russia. :-)

You don't need an extra button for mirror lock-up, so this one is actually possible.

I can still get the site, but use the Google Cache if it's /.ed for you.

The main thing I'd like to see in a firmware hack is the 1st curtain/2nd curtain option. Also the option to boost or lower flash intensity through the camera. But mainly a 2nd curtain option would be fantastic. Let me know if you try out the hack.

From what I have read the firmware will provide flash adjustment.

Personally, I am quite concerned with using the hacked firmware, only because of the warranty issue. This time next year, I will be all about flashing my 300D, until then I will be sticking with the default firmware and or any upgrade firmware from Canon.

With this happening, Canon might be smart to make their own 'official' release of this firmware and sell it through their web-site. Obviously not for $500, but for a reasonable amount. This obviously wouldn't void the warranty then and would be something I would seriously consider.

That would be nice! I would like to have my partial metering too!

Interesting. No manual Kelvin WB settings?
Whats FEC?

Yeah I'd be willing to pay for 2nd curtain and partial metering!
I agree with the warranty issue though I too will probably just
stick with the factory firmware.

Well, you can "pay for" 2nd curtain sync by getting a 550EX flash. With the 550EX, front or rear sync is controlled by a setting on the flash, not the camera -- even if the camera has a setting for it (like the 10D). In other words, the sync setting on the 550EX overrides the camera.

And you can get "partial spot metering" (or "spot metering" if you can fill the circle in the viewfinder with whatever you want to spot meter by zooming or whatever) in P/Av/Tv/M/A-DEP modes by pressing the "AE lock" button...

hmmm I was looking at the 420 but I didn't realize the 550 could do that! I guess I will be saving for a 550 instead! I almost exclusively
shoot in Av or M mode, so I use the AE lock a lot, but I would be willing to pay for the luxury of setting it and forgetting about it!

I can assure that the new firmware is working.

This is an update to an older firmware that used controlled the flash. it also allows you to adjust the size of the jpg ebmedded with a raw file. Lets you put more on a card, and probably speeds things up a bit.

The new firmware is even better, MLU is definately working, and works better than on the 10d apparently (instead of hitting shutter again to take picture, there is a 1second delay, and then it takes it)

Oh, and the one shot selection is definately my favorite. Now you can focus, recompose, without worrying about the servo kicking in!

On the 10D, mirror lock-up is primarily intended to be used with the self-timer. You set the MLU option, set the shooting mode to "timer", then push the shutter button. The self timer starts beeping and counts down 2 seconds (instead of the normal 10), then takes the picture. This delay ensures that any miniscule vibration from the mirror flipping up has subsided before the shutter curtain actually exposes the image.

The advantage to the "10D" way is that if you are using a remote shutter release (to avoid vibrations in the camera), you still have the option of not using self-timer mode to allow you to take a picture at exactly the "right instant" (i.e., to catch a drop of water hitting the surface of a pool of water) without any sort of camera-imposed delay...

This is very helpful for many shots. The FEC can be turned on or off in the menu. You can have your "set" button work the FEC, or have it bring up the normal "quality setting" menu. Nothing is disabled, everything works fine. Just thought I would mention it for those who were interested." -- BigMike, DPReview -- Also quoted on the page above.

I also installed this new firmware yesterday, and have used it extensively. The two main features I wanted were MLU and FEC, both of which work perfectly. The AF-One Shot and ISO 3200 are pretty useful as well. I have yet to encounter and problems thus far.

Definately worthwile, especially because you can always flash the Canon firmware back, and I do not believe that Canon could even tell that you had ever installed non-Canon firmware.

Look at the sigma 500 dg super also, it has the second curtain, fec, ect. at about half the price of the 550ex

Would you lose high speed sync with that, or does the 300D even support that E-TTL mode ?
