As you made have read, we are planning season 2 of the DPL. There are a number of details that we'll be ironing out before launch, so don't be surprised if you see a poll or two seeking your input.

Stay tuned for more details.

finally... I thought I was going to put in my "will" for my son, or his son/daughter to join when time comes... I never thought I would be in one before I die :P

YIPPEE. I see the survey, but I don't know what Option 3 means!

Help?

For example, the average of the profile averages of all team members must not exceed 6.0000

Now I have to drive through DPC land in a used police cruiser trying to put the band back together! ;-)

In Season 1, here is how the teams were seeded originally. At the top, you had Ribbon Hogs with 6.7 and at the bottom was 4.9. Option 3 would seek to disallow that high of average and limit a team's average to say 6.2 or under.

By the way, those averages were based on 30-day averages, iirc.

As I understand it, Option 3 means that the teams can assemble themselves, but we'll be calculating some kind of overall team average, which will be limited to prevent teams being "stacked" with all the highest-scoring photographers.

Option 1 would allow teams to be composed of anyone, but we'd introduce some kind of handicapping factor based on the team's overall average to balance out the chances of each team winning, similar to what's done in amateur golf.

Okay, but isn't that approximately the same as Option one? Hey, I'm not a math wizzard.

It means that you add up the starting averages of all your team members and they can't exceed a certain fixed figure. It's like a salary cap in baseball, sort of. You can have a couple superstars, but you'll have to balance them with some much more normal producers.

In other words, teams like the Ribbon Hogs of yore won't be allowable this time around.

Do we all get to sing Rawhide?

No. a handicap system would be one where the Ribbon Hogs were allowed to compete but they'd have to give points to teams made up of ordinary performers.

Why, exactly, are we worried about 'fairness"? Shouldn't the best be allowed to get together and destroy people? Isn't that life? If you can't hack the heat, get out of the kitchen?

Are we so pussified that we're going to cater to mediocrity? Really?
01/21/2010 09:15:01 PM · #20
I think the idea is for everyone to begin the race from the same starting line.
01/21/2010 09:15:14 PM · #21
So, re Bear_Music's explanations, both options would give handicaps?
thus making it a level playing field. Or is there still a way to dominate the field?
Math isn't my strong subject. (I probably wont say that again)
:-))

I see it more like a draft, build the best team you can within the given constraints. Makes for a better competition. Even the Yankees have a limited amount of money. Sort of...

But it's not a race.

I guess Golf does something similar, but it's golf. lol. Ah well, I'm just outspoken. I don't like it.

Ever been in a bowling league?
Handicaps help level the playing field.

All of the options are just different ways to "level the playing field."
