ok so Im looking at making another trip south in a month or so and Im seriously confused as to what can and can't be brought on the planes now in light of all the new restrictions as of the changes at Christmas. Are people still getting on with camera bags or are they being forced to check them? If anyone has info Id be very grateful!

Just flew from NM to Miami with mine as secondary (personal item) carry on... No issues at all.

Didn't even have to take it out of the bag to put it through the scanner.

I think it's safe to say that the "rules" are in a state of flux and can change on any leg and at any time even within the same airline & flight :-/ Keep it looking as small and light as possible I guess and be prepared to check it......... Last trip back from Oz (last round of stupidness) - I ended up buying a toolbox last minute and packing a lot of stuff in that and put that inside the checkin....

Last week I flew from NYC to Florida with a DSLR and 3 lenses in a backpack, and 24" long tripod legs in a duffle, both carry-ons, without a hitch. I'll be bringing all back with me in a few days and will be curious to see what happens after the latest "serious" threat coming out of Yemen that was announced a few days ago.

Thanks Louis that's clearing a lot more up. I don't think there's much for issues flying inside the US its the restrictions flying from Canada to the US that are sucking right now, Ive heard a lot of conflicting stories and there's NO WAY I'm checking my camera bag, even in a pelican case with my luck it wouldn't make it...

I hope they string that other idiot up by whats left of his nuts that tried to blow up a plane at xmas that started all this new paranoia >:(

It's gonna be cold on the lake, so bring your giant zip lock bags, maybe we can use them for hats!

I found this on Air Canada's website:

//www.aircanada.com/en/news/trav_adv/091230.html
All I can say is...crud.

edit to add:
Then again this says slightly different info...

Especially under the header "Other"

Yea I saw that PDF through westjets site but its still fricken confusing, might just drive down to the airport with my bag and get a yes or no from customs...

Definitely confusing. One talks about just carryon but the other differentiates between carryon and personal item.

I would err on the side of caution and make your bag fit the personal item size restriction.

BTW, it's the airline which will restrict you, not US customs.

Got this from the US Airways site which is the one IM flying with...

"Travel from Canada to the U.S.
Effective December 28, 2009

Transport Canada, a department of the Canadian government, has implemented a ban on carry-on baggage. Customers on flights from any airport in Canada to the United States are not permitted to carry-on any baggage. Exempt from this ban are medication or medical devices, small purses, cameras, coats, items for care of infants, laptop computers, crutches, canes, walkers, containers carrying life sustaining items, a special needs item, musical instruments, or diplomatic or consular bags."

I agree, but does all this really deter something from happening again. next time someone will put something in the luggage. or will swallow a bomb. we will all have to vomit at check in

Oh no, as we speak they are installing new x-ray machines that will let customs look under your clothing for dangerous goods. YAY more radiation exposure!! On the bright side think of the money saved on flashlight batteries as I'll be glowing in the dark :P

Be at the airport at least 3 hrs before your flight.

Yea even at the best of times I try to get there at min 3hrs before my flight. the last time going down I only had about 15min wait after getting through customs and what not and had gotten there 3hrs before :(

There is an alternative to swallowing.... which could make the check-in queues even more interesting.
