I wish i could help you. I have wondered this myself!

I'm not sure why you'd want to, but I guess just create a new layer, then go to 'Transform' under the edit menu. From there you can scale the new layer until your heart's content.

can you give us more info. Usually if the layer you are trying to add is bigger than the process is pretty easy but if the layer you are trying to add then it is a littel more complicated.
w/o more details, you can resize the layer you want to add either thru resize wizard or thru image size.
Not sure if you need more details on how to to do this. in case you do, I can help. Drop some more info if you can.

Are you trying to insert a layer that is larger or smaller than your original image? Depending on what you are trying to do, you will either need to scale your entire image, or change the size of the canvas while leaving your image size alone....can you say a little more about what you are trying to do?

select the layer you whant to resize in the layers palette, then Edit>Transform>Scale. If you want to keep the proportions of the scaling hold down the shift key while you do it.

then you can first resize the 12x12 one to 7x7 or whatever size suits you and select all/copy/paste it after that.

If that's all you are going to do with the second layer, just change the canvas size to 12 x 12 - and make the canvas color black.

Not 100% sure what your doing but I just tried this

I took a 600 X 600 picture on Layer 1
I made the canvas size 800 X 800
The I pasted a new pic at 800 X 800 into a new layer and voila a bigger picture on a new layer
The original layer holding the 600 X 600 is also biger but I dont know if this is a problem???

was that any help?

edit: just noticed photom's answer as I was typing this...same thing

Steve

If you are adding something from another file, do this:
In the file you want to add to the final image, Select All and copy to the Clipboard.

In the target (final) file, create a new layer and Select All

From the Edit menu choose Paste Into.

You can now use the pointer tool to move the image around inside the "window" or select Edit Menu > Transform > Scale to adjust its size as previously described.

You'll also have to copy the background of your original image to a new layer, so you can move it above your inserted background.

lelani, try double-clicking your background layer...it'll bring up a layer options menu. Click OK. Your background image is now a new floating layer. Then go to Image>Canvas Size... and enlarge your canvas to 12 x 12. Now you can go to your layer palette and add a new layer. Once you've added it, drag it below your image layer, and then fill it with any color you want.

ill explain a bit more of what im trying to do -
i opened a photo up - duplicated a layer to have the original and named it levels as on this layer the levels where fixed
now id like to add a background all black as a layer (larger )
next i'm going to add another photo as a layer as well and duplicate that name it mask as this layer will be sligtly changed
next a new layer for text and so on -
but id like all in layers so id be able to hide in case my client does not like something, im just stuck on the larger black layer

Well it was just to show you how to layer the thing

If you copy and paste your 7X9 image into "Layer 1 7X9" then the black layer I created at 12X12 will be behind it like wot you were trying to do.

Size the canvas to 12x12. Then create a black box, after you say new->layer. Then send it to the back. If this doesn't work, then your photoshop is messed up.
