I'd love to see a "discussion" regarding this. The above quote was pulled from the Posthumous Ribbons thread because I didn't want to derail that one.

The linked photo (shot by zeuszen) scored 4.7059 and came in 298th out of 332 entries in the recently finished December 2009 Free Study.

I scored it a 4 because I didn't find it particularly interesting. Kind of a ho-hum, look for a sec, have no idea what it is (nor did I really care - if it was a macro puzzle challenge then maybe), and moved along.

Show me the light. What did I miss?

Edit - Grrr. I screwed up the title of this thread. Meant to put it in quotes... :-{

I gave it a 7. It's "artsy". I've been liking "artsy" more & more lately. It's something different to look at. Not a deeply saturated landscape (don't get me wrong, I score them well, too, when they are done well).

I'm with you, I scored it a 4 for pretty well the same reasons. I don't "get" images like this. Perhaps I am not "artistic" enough.

I don't think you missed anything. Your reaction to the photo was probably the exact same as many others, given the score. I think this type of photo appeals to a select few. Saying that others who don't like or get it are closed minded is really insulting. I don't insult them because they like what I consider to be a boring image.

Did you send Mark, pekesty a note letting him know about this post? He might like to add to this discussion. I'm still mulling it over...

I don't think that you particularly missed anything rather that people approach photography and art in different ways. Your comment here is pertinent i feel...

I gave the image a 9 and it was in my top ten of the challenge in many ways because i had no idea what it was. It created a sense of mystery and made me go back to it again and again to wonder. I also find it very aesthetically pleasing to look at of course but the photography that really moves me that i love has to challenge me on some level and have this mystery and these are the images that i rate at 9 or 10. Thats not to say that i dislike everything else of course! I think the top 30 images in this free study got 6, 7 or 8s off me. Sometimes for stunning technicality though. I really don't get much out of glossy studio glamour shots, typical stock-like images or images of eagles etc but i can appreciate what others see in them.

People like different things. I love the films of David Lynch and Jan Svankmajer and the books of William Burroughs and Lovecraft and a lot of people don't.

As I said, I liked it, but on this point I agree with you. I wouldn't call anyone "closed minded" because they don't.

To each, his/her own.

A select few on DPC of course. Elsewhere it would appeal more to the majority than sunsets and wildlife. Places like 1X for example. Different strokes etc

I gave it a 7. I liked the interesting play of light and shadows. It's what I think of as a semi-abstract, and I did not think it was necessary for me to really know what it was.

Honestly it looks like a photo of an Xray or some other sort of film and am not even sure it's actually a legal shot. Has it been validated by SC or brought to their attention?

I thought it was quite interesting. I don't always WANT a photograph to be so basically "in your face obvious" to be appreciated by me. This had "non commercial" appeal to me which is far more to my liking than the normal, more stock look that seems to be the favorite here. Don't get me wrong, many are quite nice and well done, but I like the more artsy stuff. This thread does give insight as to why the artsy stuff does so poorly at DPC, but those shots also garner some wonderfully positive comments which is far more than I can say for the more mainstream shots I do. You did exactly as we encourage everyone here to do. Vote your mind...if it needs to speak to you, then score it accordingly, but we all should mention why we score it low if we don't "get it" or care for it. (Now getting into the same "beat the dead horse" voting snit, lol.) :)

I'm not sure zeuszen would make such an elementary mistake after being here nearly 7 years though.

Perhaps it is not necessary to "get it" to appreciate art.
The fact that it evokes a response, negative or positive, is also a function of art.
This piece has fulfilled that responsibility. way to go, Zeuszen!
You've made people think.

I didn't vote on it, in fact never saw the shot before I opened this thread, but I have some photos of X-rays or scans of other films, and it pretty much looks like this. I wouldn't think he would either, but at first site that is what it appears to me to be.

And then be accused of being closed minded? No thanks. I'll keep those comments to myself.

Even if it were, I don't believe it breaks the "artwork rule".

I think. I'm not sure. The artwork rule is confusing.

TO me it looks like a photo of a photo(that is what film or xray is) and clearly would break the rule.

For the record, i don't agree with the closed minded statement either. If thats the case then i guess i could be accused of being closed minded when i run a mile from a golden eagle headshot or a, i can hardly bring myself to say it..., woody photograph! Arrgh!

Well, I do enjoy some "artistic" photos, for example I gave this photo my only 10 in the recent Umbrella challenge -->

And this photo has been a long standing favorite of mine --> :-)

Maybe "Sara" teaches PE at Duchesne HS in St. Charles, Missouri? Or maybe Sara Duchesne is a Professional Engineer? Or...?

Who the heck cares? I think it's a wonderful and thought-provoking image, and it was one of my higher scores given int he challenge. I'd rather have this one on my wall than my own, 13th-place, just-another-sunset, though in my own defense i show a sunset that was dramatically flawed by a huge contrail :-)

This image was not underrated, it was just rated. I’m sure zeuszen found the audience he was seeking, if only it be himself.

1x? They go for the wow more than DPC it seems sometimes. They seem to like images that are clear in their message, not anything like the one in the OP.

As for the image in the OP, I don't get it. Let me ask the art crowd around here a question. Does it absolutely need to be out of focus for it to be considered art? ;|

i prefer the disparity between the masses and those that connect with me. nothing is worse than scoring a near 5 and having the commenters treat you no better.

Perhaps now. To be honest it's been a long time since i've looked at 1x but i thought this was an image they'd be taken with. Still, my point stands. There are some sites that would enjoy this image more than other more DPC friendly ones.

Yes. The out of focus blur is an obvious metaphor for Platos Cave and similar concepts of reality. Honestly Jac, keep up. ;)

I gave it a 7 purely because I enjoyed the way the blacks were used in this image. I enjoyed looking at it. I couldn't figure out what it was, but I didn't spend much time trying, it didn't seem like identifying the subject was important. Photography's historic purpose has been to document what we see. Some people use the camera to explore what we can't see, or don't see, or what might be overlooked or hidden. This does sometimes upset or confuse people.
