| what exactly do people mean by that and how if one wanted a "hard" image would be the way to go about it? |

Soft focus is one way to get a soft image and crisp focus would, of course, be the opposite...although I've never heard it referred to as a "hard" image.
A "hard" image would be getting a shot of my son smiling. It's not that he is unhappy, he just won't smile when the camera is pointed at him.

| In a bad way, people can call your image soft if it isn't sharpened properly (not enough sharpening). The focus tends to be soft (not to be confused with intentional soft focus). |

| Ever watch the original Star Trek series? Every closeup of a woman is in soft focus, especially those who Kirk was womanizing. ;\ |
