Less of this, more of that, and a few more of those.

Just a thought.

There is a suggestion of one open challenge a week which makes some sense and is quite widely supported, I think. The downside is that, e.g., an 'Autumn Leaves' challenge slams out a hemisphere, or 'City Lights' is hard on those who are otherwise fortunate enough to live outside cities. So two challenges enables one challenge to be a bit more specialised.

So how about an annual rota of 52 plain Jane challenges with two weeks to enter and one week to vote, supplemented by a second that comes at shorter notice. The second gets to be more whacko. Could be user-nominated, for example...

Best of Quarter Free Studies (allows a 3 window on the image capture, and gets us all a chance to enter and see more of people's best images)
Best of 6 Months Free Studies (same concept as above)

We had so much participation in the celebration challenge which had no time limits at all--1000+ entries and 500+ voters, I think we should do some of those more often, too.

I would like to see a weekly free study with advanced editing. And the monthly free study switched to expert editing.

I would like to see a video of Langdon's head exploding when he tries to satisfy everyone in this thread. That would be cool to see and probably pretty popular on YouTube. We'd have to find another masochist to run DPC, however.

You neglected to include Ooppsey Theory or the very complex Dayzee Hypothesis, and the endeavour to merge the two in the quest for the Grand Unification Ooppsey Dayzee Theory.

And yet you dare consider yourself a scientist.....

I'll leave all the creative changes to you guys, I kinda just like the site. The new improvements lately have been Great! I just have two things I personally would like to see. #1. Have the ability to upload more then one image at a time to a portfolio. #2. It would be nice to not only have your all time average on your profile page but your average year by year, some of us nuts are starting to be here for a while :)

Zip the photos into a zip file and upload the zip file.

DPL... it was so much fun :) however, separate leagues or something to make it more fair, like <2 ribbons and >2 ribbons leagues. just an idea.

the watermark thing fixed so I can zoom images with firefox.

website integrated chat room.

Be serious.

- challenge descriptions should be addressed to the voters instead of the photographers.
- the only rule for photographers should be no plagiarism.
- a sense of history. nothing frees your mind from prejudices better than knowing where they came from.
- users should be given a green shirt if their IP addresses originate from another planet.

Now if they could only extract the exif from those same files and fill in the data entries. Instead of having to do them painstakingly one at a time.

a "no pet" rule unless the challenge specifically asks for it. i'm sick of seeing the same shots of everyone's dogs and cats. Seriously, I am an animal lover but to be honest no one thinks your cat is cute but you.

Hmm, I am surprised that there weren't more people commenting on this thread.
12/20/2009 04:37:40 PM · #67
Maybe because no official response from Langdon over the `future` thread - maybe they feel this will fall on deaf ears as well. :(
12/20/2009 04:44:06 PM · #68
Well, I do understand that. But you gain nothing from doing nothing, and maybe you gain something from doing something.

I have already had a couple of ideas from this thread that we as members could implement, just got to work out the finer details!

But it would be nice if all the people that are going on and asking for changes, put it in one thread, so it can be looked at critically.

More attention to the Challenge Suggestions thread. There are a lot of great suggestions there at all times but yet we see for instance "Puzzle Macro III" before picking something from the suggestions box that hasn't been used before. I have never understood why.

I do like the puzzle challenge though. It was just an example.

Otherwise I think this is a great site and I like pretty much all the features and all the things Langdon has done to it.

This was a user suggestion made 12/1/09 ...

Personally, I'd like:
• people to quit telling other people what kind of pictures to submit (or, more frequently, what not to submit)

• an entry which gets a score of 6.5

1. Checkbox to indicate photographer solicits comments from voters.
2. Two rule sets only, "everything goes" and "straight from the camera" that only allows typical in-camera adjustments.
3. If DPL is ever resumed, it needs its own separate challenges.
4. No gimicky challenge topics. Topic title should make the topic obvious since many people never read the descriptions.

A friend of mine told me "if you want to get better, compete with these guys." So, I must want to get better. Either that or wear out my shutter and waste ridiculous amounts of time.
