A Master Voters Challenge, where only voters with >10,000 votes (or pick another number) can vote.

Link unedited jpegs to all ribbon winners in a way that enables before and after viewing of edits. (Limited to ribboners since winners have to submit original files for verification anyway, so easy to implement)

Add some boxes for "Post Processing" in the Image Details entry form, maybe one for "Program" and another for "Filters"

All of these are terrific ideas.

Email notification when you get new comments. Or perhaps onsite notification that you have new comments. (And yes, I know about checking the Comments Received bit. I'm thinking more of when I leave comments on photographs in portfolios and the owners may never know or see them.)

Deb I believe that is already in place.

Well I'll be! I never knew that was there! (For those who didn't know that either, there is an option in Preferences that you can set.)

In the forums, once you've posted to a thread, automatically disable your ability to make another post to that thread until at least 7 other posts have been made.

The idea is to prevent threads from being dominated or hijacked. If you want to contine a one-on-one convo from a thread, you can always do it by PM.)

JulietNN to start more threads like this one.

A self-rated photographer skills indicator. Many on the site presume certain levels of expertise / competency / etc. that may just not be true. Perhaps if people knew that a person considered themselves a beginner, they would take on more of a mentor role.

Not all my ideas but lending support to some others that have been requested ...

An occassional Juried Challenge, ...

An occasional Master Voters Challenge, ...

A quarterly "expert editing" challenge.

Checkbox to indicate on a challenge entry if comments and critiques are welcomed ...

Editing software to be added to equipment list ...

Smart search ... users would have many filters ... (e.g. so I could find ribbon winning photos, shot with a Nikon D3s, using VR lens, w/o flash, at shutter speeds longer than 1/2 second)

A periodic knockout Freestyle challenge ...

A balance of technical and subject challenges ...

DPC Academy Awards ... members nominate/vote members to the academy. Academy evaluates the year's photos, and awards [name the award] for best Landscape, Portrait, Macro, ..., Out-of-Box, Abstract, ...

Langdon I hope you will be reading this thread.

It would be great if you used all the ideas that are being offered here, then made a poll to let us all pick our three (or more) top choices, or better still let us assign a value to all of the choices.

This would require certain guidelines on what you type into the shutter/aperture boxes. For example, 1/30, 30, 1/30 sec, 0.03, 0.03 sec, and 1/30" could all be more or less acceptable ways to express "1/30 sec." Likewise, f/1.8, 1/1.8, and 1.8 could all be different ways of writing the aperture.

Even if they were read from the EXIF, two problems could arise - the first is that some cameras transform shutter speeds into horrible fractions like 10/3200*; the second is that EXIF reading won't work if you've been using layers, so people would still have to type stuff in (which, again, may cause some problems if guidelines are not in place).

*The problem with those fractions is there would now be entries in the database for 10/3200 that would, first of all, load up the database with useless extra entries, as well as not be found in search results for "1/320."

Back to our regularly scheduled programming... (sorry I didn't follow the rules of the thread)

I'll just second (or third, whatever)certain other ideas I thought were good, with comments:

The "one technical, one subject challenge" idea in which breaking rules of the former would lead to DQ (e.g. "High Noon" challenge and the image was not taken between 11 AM and 1 PM, or "10 second shutter" and the shot was a 20 second exposure. ISO values can be changed, so it wouldn't work for ISO.)... would be a great idea

Smart search is an awesome idea, with certain limits or guidelines (see above)

The "critique welcome" or "critique encouraged" checkbox would be helpful - it'd stop us from pissing off those who don't want critiques, and help those of us that really want people to nitpick every detail.

The "self-rated photographer skills" thing would work best as two drop-down lists - one would be your skill level, one would be the "type of photographer" you consider yourself. The former would have things like "novice," "amateur," "skilled amateur," and "expert," and the latter would have things like "professional photographer," "enthusiast," and "[insert word for snapshotter]."

A Site Council review/refresh

Integrated Mentoring Program

Less challenges.

For me it's the lack of an image search.... Yeah I know image searching is just getting traction and it's not easy but even outside a real image search.... there is a bit of meta data that is available and that could be far more flexible.

A far better way to find your own posts and responses... For example FredMiranda has a my posts button that makes this easy and it positions on the correct place in the conversation.

Do something about the dead images floating around... A VERY simple change would be to not make the thumb linkable rather then getting a blank page to say the users is not around... that's pathetic. Better would be to make it clear before even clicking.... I actually would prefer to keep the thumb BUT I don't see how hiding the image once the user is gone while still showing the thumb is consistent.

User selectable interfaces to allow people to have what scheme they want.. maybe from a pick of a couple at least and this can get out of hand VERY quickly and cause issues for debugging.

1/2 Joking: Clear out some of the crud.... I still cannot get the username I want cause someone 7 years ago registered and never did anything :-)

In addition to Monthly Free Studies, and the annual best of year free study:

Best of Quarter Free Studies (allows a 3 window on the image capture, and gets us all a chance to enter and see more of people's best images)
Best of 6 Months Free Studies (same concept as above)

We had so much participation in the celebration challenge which had no time limits at all--1000+ entries and 500+ voters, I think we should do some of those more often, too.

Agreed. The biggest surge of participation and comradeship in my relatively short time here was at the 1000th challenge. Three, four or even 6 month free studies would be so cool.

My 'what would I want from DPC' at the moment is for the Recently Uploaded Photos page easier to scroll through. It's a page I love to visit recently, but I keep having to hit 'back', then clicking the next pic instead of just an arrow key.

Second this!

The ability to upload more than one photo at a time to your portfolio - (Yeh I know you can upload a zip file but I would like something easier !)

When browsing galleries have the ability to click 'next' or arrows > < Instead of having to go back (this has already been mentioned by others)

Less challenges per week

More people voting

Add a photog of the week in the left hand menue with a link to their photos

Extend the ribbons to the top five entries > Blue > Red > Yellow > Green > Orange

-Chocolate

and

-A less strict approach to challenges. Challenges which encourage freedom of expression within a topic and not punishment for interpreting something in a different way.
