How about a registered user free study, NO MEMBERS ALLOWED

I think it would be an uphill battle to explain to the paying customers (members) why they're not allowed to enter a challenge that non-paying customers (registered users) can.

let them be crybaby's if they want, its just one challenge, im sure they will not keel over if they can't enter 1 little challenge, they usually have their own free study going on anyway, so why would they need to enter two at the same time, oh i know, to keep the registered users down and so that they can win every challenge with overedited bugs and waterdrops and bubbles and stuff like that

Didn't you just suggest this a few days ago? Become a member if you want to enter member challenges.

I have no problem with 2 separate free studies running at the same time. Perhaps if it was offered one month, it might be an incentive for people to join.

Though, on second thought, large challenge, lots of entries, little voting, voting that usually runs about .5 point lower than regular challenges, having your favorite shot trashed by the voting populace... might not be much of an incentive.

If the number of Open challenges are increased, it reduced the incentives to join and support the site. If you want more challenges, especially a free study, pay the $25 and join the site, and therefore support the site and keep it running. I don't support any challenge where the members are not able to enter, as we are the ones supporting this site.

In terms of the Free Study, it is a free study. It is meant to be your best image of the month, and can be of anything. Voting tends to be harder, as the quality is higher, and there is no 'meeting the challenge' points that you pick up in the challenges. I always think that the Free Study should be scored harder. As for my image getting trashed, it depends if you are trying to appeal to the masses, or stepping outside the box and appealing to a smaaller crowd.

As for the little voting, it is difficult to vote on all images, even more so to comment them........My only possible solution to this, other than encourage more people to vote, could be to open up the free study so that non-members can vote on the challenge..........

If this is how you think about the members who pay for this site to host your work for all the world to see than I think that I do not want to pay for that anymore and suggest you be kicked off this site alltogether per direct.

Was it so difficult to ask for this in a polite way? Within two posts you reverted to shit.

Apparently it was as his last post got locked for the same reason. Guess some people just don't learn.

I have an Idea that might please everyone. Then again, that is not really posible here at DPC, is it?????

Example:

1. Gold Membership:
$25.00 per year, Allows you access to all Exclusive Member Challenges 1 Open Challenge per Week + 12 Free Studies. Complete access to all Message Boards. The current Portfolio Space. (Basically as it is now)

2. Silver Membership:
$15.00 per year. Allows you to enter 26 Exclusive Member Challenges per year, 1 Open Challenge per week + the 12 Free Studies. Allowed to access some of the member exclusive Message Boards and given half the Portfolio space of Gold Members. (Total 38 Member Challenges)

3. Bronze Membership:
$10.00 per year. Allows you to enter 2 Exclusive Member Challenge Per Month for 12 Months + 6 Free Studies. Access to some Member Exclusive Message Boards. No Portfolio Space. (Total 30 Member Challenges)

4. Registered User:
Free and should remain as it is now.

Edit to add one thing I forgot. Only the Gold Membership should be allowed an Update Button...

I sense frustration here. If you have a good photo to enter in a free study, pay the 5 measly dollars to join for a month and enter your image. You'll be able to join 4 member challenges too. All that for 5 bucks.

'to keep the registered users down and so that they can win every challenge with overedited bugs and waterdrops and bubbles and stuff like that'

Thanks for the laugh this morning. ROFL

I am pretty sure Rule #11 got your last thread locked, responses like this will do the same to this one, and hopefully remove a bad seed from the site. I suggest some anger management therapy for you.

It costs some money to keep a site like this running. I think the current setup provides incentive to support the site while still offering a good amount for free. Changing it to a tiered setup would not be bad, but it may add unneeded complexity.

I started with the free membership. When I saw some member challenges that I wanted to enter, I then went month to month at $5 a pop for a while. Once I realized I would stick with it, it was well worth the $25 a year.

How about having an open free study for one month. During that month, have only one open challenge per week. Ev'rybody happy.

Bad idea. Too easy to "meet the challenge" so a LOT of entries. Add to that a good amount of low scores, a low number of votes, possibly a low number of comments... these are all things that apply to free studies, but registered users may be turned off to spending the $5 to join ANY member challenges.

Seriously, pay the five bucks. Worth the money if all you want is to try it one month - it's five challenges, plus possibly exclusive or extra ones (see: Rural Decay, Tilt Shift, Halloween, Foliage, etc.)*, plus members' forum, ad-less browsing, update button...

*Rural Decay and Tilt Shift are consecutive midweek challenges on top of the Sunday ones. Have we moved to two member challenges per week? In that case, you still have exclusive ones - Foliage, Halloween, DNMC, Fireworks, Best of '08 still were "extras" - and you have nine member challenges rather than five.

Just bite the bullet and pay your membership fees and then you can enter as many Free Studies as you like. $25 bucks a year....is that too much for you? I am sure you paid more than that for your camera!

I'm sorry but this is almost worse than what he is proposing, Either you are a member or your not, this type of thing is just bullshit. its not that much money especially considering what you get. Most sites of any type are totally exclusionary to non members. OP is just a troll ignore him and he will go away.

Wonder how much that would be? I would expect some finite amount comes from ads served on the site to unregistered users and visitors. If not the amount it would be nice to know the ratio.

Absolutely...it works out to something like $0.0685 per day. Trust me... there is very little around that can give you a sense of enjoyment for this kind of money.

Another point to consider is that, several newbies and people of limited means have managed to have the general membership pay for the for their annual fees... that of course was predicated on the fact that they did not start off by attacking their hosts.

Lighten up a little, play nice and who knows... an elder might recognize the fact that frustration is the catalyst for your rather boorish behavior and might... (and I must stress the "might" part), pay for your membership.

its not about cost.....this is just a suggestion and everytime i suggest it i get flogged and crucified by the members whining of how they pay to do the challenges on the site....its not about that, it is about giving us other people a chance at something that you all get to do every month....and what if 25.00 is too much for me to pay right now, you don't know my situation....and the reason I reposted it is I didn't plan on it going awry last time, but it did, so i reposted it and yet yall did the same thing again...i don't know if i could have proposed it any nicer than i did this time, and you all thought you would take it to the next level, get over yourselves

I would strongly suggest that you copy and paste your comments and re-read them at some later date... you might then realize just how caustic your musings truly are.

Hiya Sean, I can see where you are coming from.... However, let me look at something.

Ok, so to date, you have participated in 16 challenges.

you have made 375 comments to others on their images.

Thats a good start, but you have a long ways to go. Also, you have a lot to learn about the difference between asking for something and demanding it.

Now, let me point out the simple fact that in business, someone who pays for membership is expected to receive certain perks above those who do not.

However, I am open to the idea of an everyone freestudy once a year. Perhaps the best-of can be open to every user? or to make it easier to judge offer a best-of for registered users in basic editing and Members version is advanced or even expert editing... (is there still expert editing rules around?)

Do yourself a favor and participate more friendly over the course of the next few months. Participate in challenges and discussions. In a positive and proactive manner before demanding what services you would like after only participating in 16 challenges. Get some more experience under your belt.

Also, it helps to be friendly.

I am not demanding anything, this was merely a suggestion that you all are taking as a a demand and you all are taking it to the argument level. I would have never responded in the manner that I did on the other post if I would not have been accosted by members saying that I needed to shut up and everything when I was merely a suggestion. Then, to top that all off, I was suspended from the challenge suggestions forum for two days for using the word 'prick' when describing another user that clearly said something bad about me and another user that had favorited one of my images or something, so who is more in the wrong here, its you guys all you members, so just shut up and let people suggest what they want to suggest and stop attacking people and forcing them to defend themselves, and then once they do that, they get blasted by the site council and the member gets no reprimand whatsoever

oop you better delete that or i will report you to the site council for calling me an ass
