| My 2 year old really enjoys me reading Dr. Seuss books to her before bed. Her current favorite is "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish". I think a challenge using Dr. Seuss as inspiration would be fun. Obviously any copyrighted material (including shots of the books or text out of the books) would be prohibited, but using creativity and good photo titles could generate some really fun entries. |

As if we don't already have enough cat pictures on this site! :) Although the action shots of "trying to put a hat on my cat" could be interesting.
(and, I'm ashamed to say, I actually like most of the cat photos). |

I think it's a fun suggestion. There are lots of great themes in Dr.Seuss' work; the arms race, zenophobia, the environment. Those are just three themes I can think of right off the bat.

How about favorite children's book? That way I don't have to go through all of my green food coloring trying to get the eggs and ham to look right.

| lol well I hate to bring this to you all but Dr. Seuss doesn't have the international coverage :) Ok, let's have Dr. Seuss then Ill think of a romanian author to propose :D |

I don't think this is true, actually. Here's something I copied from the website, //www.seussville.com:
"Translations, Languages
At the time of Ted’s death on September 24, 1991, some 200 million copies of his books, translated into 15 different languages, had found their way into homes and hearts around the world. Since then, sales continue to climb, estimated at more than 22 million since 1991."
I realize there are a lot more than 15 different languages in the world but that should cover a lot of bases. And this was just from 1991. Who knows how many more translations have been made now that his widow is in charge of his estate (after Hollywood left a bitter taste, he never wanted any of his books to be turned into the kind of debacles she's allowed).

I looked and looked for Dr.Seuss in Romanian but couldn't find any reference. :(
The good thing is you read English. If you can get a hold of any of his books I think you will like them. My favorites are Horton Hears a Who, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, Green Eggs and Ham, Fox in Socks The Butter Battle Book, Hop on Pop, To Think That I Saw it On Mulberry Street....for starters. :D
I'm always curious how rhyming works like this translate into other languages .I'll always remember a Danish friend's story of how the Beatle's song Yellow Submarine is translated into Danish. The literal translation is "We all live in a U-Boat that is yellow." It loses something, somehow. :-D
What are some favorite Romanian children's books? I have an old Children's Illustrator's International Annual and some of the most gorgeous and fascinating work was done by artists from Eastern-Central Europe. I love the Polish children's illustrator Jan Pienkowsi. He did some marvelous sillhouette paper cut work in his books, Easter and Christmas both of which are, sadly, out of print.
I am also a fan of animation from that area of the globe. Very dark, beautiful, and humorous. A stand-out in my mind is the Czech animator/filmaker Jan Svankmajer. I think artists from this part of the world understand the darker nature of childhood. My son saw one of Svanmajer's short films at an animation festival when he was 4 years old and it was his favorite. When it was over he piped up in his high voice, "I liked that!" It was quite dark and disturbing but it fascinated him.
I think Dr.Seuss had an idea of how dark children can be. Athough his work isn't necessarily 'dark', there are occasional sinister undertones (such as Thing 1 and Thing 2 in The Cat in the Hat).
One more stand-out work of art I have to mention is "Time of the Gypsies (Dom za vesanje ) from former Yugoslavia.
I wish I was familiar with some Romanian work to add to my favorites. I am always open to suggestions.

Dr. Seuss is my hero. I was driving home several years ago when they reported his death. I had to pull over so I could wipe my eyes. So yeah, this might be a fun challenge, anything 'Seussish.'
Alternatively, we could take photos intended for a children's book cover, kind of like the magazine cover challenge, but for a children's book.

I can still get teary eyed over Jim Henson, a hero of my childhood. |
