I am off on another trip to Norway. As usual I plan for an extra day to go shoot with my old pal Trollman.

I showed off my new Panasonic Lumix LX3 to him while we were out shooting. I told what a wonderful little point & shoot camera it is. Leica lens, full manual control, 24mm 2.0 on the wide angle zoom. I also mentioned it was exactly the same camera as the Leica D-LUX 4. Same lens, same sensor, same focal length, same assembly line, everything is the same. Except the price. The Leica costs as much as $300.00 more than the Panasonic. Yeah, yeah, yeah, there are blogs and such that say the Leica has different firmware, better lens coatings, better software, yada yada yada. Don't believe it. They are the same except for the Leica logo.

So, what does he do? The next day he goes out and buys the Leica. Calls me to meet for a beer and whips that bad boy out, complete with the brown leather Leica case.

Here's the throw down. Let's get some frugal, sensible Panasonic LX3 users to go up against the extravagant, money-to-burn Leica users and use the December Free Study to see who's the best.

The first three owners of each besides me and Trollman that respond to this thread will make up the teams.

Any takers? I'll PM a few of the owners of each camera to see if they're up for it.

Well since there are only now 11 of us Leica users and I was the first to get it back in October 08, how could I resist this side challenge. So, I'm in for this one.

I'm new to the concept of "side challenges". Care to explain?

As for the comparison - I'm all for fun, but I don't wanna be part of any senseless flame war. I'm also of the opinion that the two cameras have identical hardware, but a photo shootout won't prove anything.

No flame war, just bragging rights. ;-)

A side challenge is a user generated challenge that has no official standing in DPC. There have been several along the lines of macros, B&W, lens-baby, etc. Go through this section of the forums and you'll see what I'm talking about.

this is just for fun and a chance to show off these incredible little cameras.

I hope you join us.

I'm inn like gin David. Sounds like fun and besides I see you already signed me up! :)

And to you fmalan: DPC and it's members seldom gets into flame wars. I guess it happens that someone makes fun comments about PC vs Mac, Canon vs Nikon, my dad vs your dad etc. but it's all in good fun. If someone gets too serious about these things please help me putting the fun back into it.

And besides, who cares what the other guys think; right? We all know that Mac, Canon, Volvo, Leica, Hensel, my dad and Makita power tools is best. Everything else suck big bananas! Even although so called 'tests' and 'reviews' tells us otherwise :P

My last Lumix entry came in sub-5 and I chickened out of Contre Jour with this one:

??

I can shoot what pleases me with my Lumix - it's a most excellent take-while-biking camera. But I cannot score well with it. I'd say you'll do well with fmalan and EstimatedEyes assisting you on the Lumix side!

(Besides, Sarah and I help each other with entries - we can't go against each other... )

You need someone who can score. :-) Besides, fmalan responded first - he has first dibs AND he holds the highest ranking Lumix shot at the moment. If he does not wish to participate, I'll be a back-up. Just don't make me sing.

Not so, Deb ... you've got 2 of the top 5 scores for the camera. I'd gladly step aside for you if need be ... we need you on the team to put those high-spending, but oh so trendy, leica owners in their place!

I really love this shot Melethia. Would have received an 8 from me (no kidding).

Right on target for the challenge, love the mist, minimalistic, excellent shades of grey, sharp, well composed. Sure that wasn't a Leica???

OK. I was hesitating because this is my last month in Europe (*sob*) and I was hoping for the mother of all Free Study entries with my beloved Canon. But hey, we all know that ain't gonna happen no matter how much I hope for it! So I'll carry the Lumix about. And I may remove the shot I posted to this thread - it could come in handy later, and was indeed shot in December.... :-)

I don't think I should be the one as I haven't shot a lot with my new little Leica yet. And, actually, I haven't done much with point and shoot ever.
But I'm always up for some fun so if someone twisted my arm, well, you might get me to change my mind.

Can team members confer on their entries??? Judging by my scores lately, it seems I have trouble selecting the right shots for a free study.

PS I have no idea why I picked the Leica over the Panasonic because they really are the same camera. Different case. I am really impressed with it though.

Oh and so it looks like you don't need me anyway. Just as well.

Deb - that shot is magnifique!!!

OK, that's it. I'm hiding the shot. :-) Everyone, forget you ever saw it.

Or not. I think it's stuck there since you guys quoted it, but that's OK.

I will say I am highly envious of the Leica leather case....

Delete it from your portfolio and then re-upload and hide it. It will no longer appear in the quoted replies.

Okay I'll be honest. The sales rep threw the case in and I bought the Leica.
