One of the most useful enhancements to the current portfolio system would be the ability to add descriptions for collections. Going forward, I'd like to organize photos I add to my portfolio into meaningful collections. The ability to describe them with suitable text would be very helpful.

What type of description would you add to your collection of "Portraits"

Portraits of people?

Just name your collection(s) with the description you want such as

Portraits > Kids or Adults
Portraits > Animals

And so on. I don't think we need to clutter up our portfolios even more with descriptions when you can already stack your collects by title.

I would like the capability to put up descriptions as well. Some of the collections I have, I'd love to put a short paragraph explaining the circumstances of either the event, or a description of what the images are about.

Sometimes a title just isn't enough.

It could be optional, like watermarks.......8>)

Isn't that what the image description is for when the user clicks on the image to look at it?

Yes.......and I'd really like to be able to put a little piece in the collection description that would state the description of ALL the images in the collection, i.e., "This was the annual Civil War recreation event put together by X and such signifying Y and such, in honor of......etc, etc...."

Then, each individual imager could be better served when said Civil War recreation has troops, companies, etc from all over the entire country that could be spelled out individually.

Or....."These are the images taken both in the town where we stayed and played, as well as the small village outside the town where we worked during the day.".

Generally, if you go to a gallery where there's a themed show, you'll find a bio/blurb that talks about the collection in the show, as well as an artist bio, with the individual images calling out specifics.

Obviously a collection titled "Portraits" is self-explanatory. However, I'd like to post the fifty photos from my book. My book is called "One". The photos are from the period 2006 to early 2009. A description field would be helpful for me in this case. I could even post a shortened form of the introduction, which explains the philosophy behind this collection of photographs.

I wouldn't propose that the field be mandatory, so that if you feel text would clutter your collections, you wouldn't be obliged to use it. An option for others would be nice though.

I can't remember who did it - but someone posted a first "image" in each collection which was a text description of that collection. Until such time as a more formal means of doing so is available, perhaps you do do the same.

Please don't do do here! There's a restroom for that!

I searched but could not find. I still have the screen-shots somewhere on CD. I suggested this at least three separate times in the past. The first got very little response. The second got even less. The third included screen-shots of the proposed idea and asked for input/changes, etc. Went nowhere. I would love to see this idea come to fruition. It would make creating/adding to a portfolio more meaningful. By this I mean, often I take a series of shots with the camera on the same settings but not in the same location. It would be nice to have a 'description' or even a place to state that 'every photo in this gallery was shot xxxxxx....' Or even a place to say that 'These are the photos I took while in ...' or whatever. Then you would not have to type certain details in every photo as well as also state a purpose - other than title - to the particular gallery. I hope you get my drift since I was not able to get it across before.

EDIT: I will hunt up the screen shots I did and post them. May take some time.

Well, it took at least two threads and loads of replies for "Urban Decay" to become a challenge. So keep on replying, and if it gets buried in the depths of the DPC dungeons, start a new thread. With enough support, it's bound to be heard.

Actually, I was going to do just that! But I thought a request for an enhancement that would benefit everyone that's fairly simple to implement would be better. I'm sorry to hear this has been suggested before with no response. I thought I remembered some talk about major portfolio enhancements coming in the near future. This was a couple of years ago. :)

I actually like this idea too. Perhaps an example can show why some folks would like this.
I have a small collection in my portfolio here, I call Seek and ye shall find

I have this description on the first image in the collection-
"I've always been drawn to scenes like this. Color, vibrancy, life, is all around us, everywhere. Even in the most un-seeming places. This collection is a project I have been working on. Finding these drab, lifeless, 'ugly' places and scenes, and trying to see the color and life that is there, but not really seen, and then 'bringing it out' in the shot, lighting and processing. I'm sure it won't cater to most folks tastes, but I'm still working on it :-), and hopefully someone or 2 may see what I'm talking about. Yes, they look 'over processed', but it is what I am trying to do, I just probably havn't perfected the concept yet :-)

Any comments are appreciated, and thanks for checking out my pic :-)"
It would be nice if I could use that as a description for this whole collection.

Uhhh... bump? I'm really hoping this feature gets added to the site :)

I also like this idea. One of the things I like about the sets and collections on Flickr is that you can add comments to the group of images rather than each individual. Those who don't have any desire to use the feature don't need to.
