The results were really surprising to me this week. I can see why the top 3 were those photos, they''re all great! I was very pleased to see some rank high that I didn''t expect, like "Quiet Sunset on 79th St" which I thought would not be popular for its wonderful camera angle and strong colours. I thought "paranoia" would rank higher than 10th, but it did well nonetheless. I''m also very surprised to have ended up in the top 50 myself! I don''t seem likely to repeat that with the score I have so far this week...

Anyway, here are some of my favourite photos that I thought were worth more than they got:

43: Charlene on the MTA
46: Transition
84: Central "Beach"

88: Kicking Back - This was my favourite photo in the whole challenge!!!!! It ranked so incredibly low, and I have almost no idea why.

98: City Girl - it might just be me, but this photo reminds me a lot of the area I lived for a few years in Sydney, around Newtown, where you see a lot of kitsch things like that. I liked it. jmsetzler, I''d like to know why you gave it 2 (just curious).

There weren''t many for me to list this week, but those ones really stood out.

I agree with you on #43 that was one of my fav of the challenge
07/01/2002 03:43:10 AM · #3
I liked 43 as well. I see you had to use a busy city life to score well. I know mine wasn't the best but I don't feel it should get ones or two's. ~shrug~

Shi I rated it very high because the one eyed bandit is a great symbol of the cost of living in the city. Neat compostition, colors, etc. too.

Comment for "Welcome to San Francisco" - Thanks for all the comments! Sorry about the poor quality that many have noted but being the first submission, I was trying to learn how all this works. It was much easier taking the photograph than getting Photoshop Elements and uploading it to this Web site! It took me forever to figure out how to get the right size, width, height, etc. I actually did crop the photo but I also see that I played with it too much (the extra border). Also I was pushed for time on Sunday night, I didn't take the care to make sure key elements were focused. I took the photo near Fisherman's Warf, but it's not Pier 39, a few piers before (sorry, I didn't pay attention to the number. I was all the way at the end of the pier when I did see how nicely lined up the posts were to the buildings, particularly the trianglar one. I was also wishing the Pier to be such a bit longer. Maybe I'll try again in a boat. Interestingly enough, there was another photographer there too but I was jealous of him because he had better equipment! Just to ease another question that alarmed me!, NO it's not an old postcard I scanned! I really did take this photograph!

46 Transition was my favorite from the whole challenge... I'm shocked it scored so low.

There are at least three pictures in the top 10 that I'd never have picked for top 30. And I'd have picked 11, 15, 21, 23 to do better.

I also can't believe 98 city girl did so poorly. This shot kills half the shots that ranked above it.

But then, I guess these are just my opinions :)

I agree Drew...#98 deserved way better than that. I liked that one.

weee, someone noticed paranoia ;)

my reasoning for posting that photograph was the question in the forums, about the city life challenge, and how would one capture rape.

i wasn't going for rape there, but i was dancing around those emotions.

i'm extremely happy my first photograph is in top 10! thank you all, very much. :)

Okay..I agree it's a good photo, good composition...great colors; but could someone explain to me how it represents life in the city so well that it's a favorite? I'm not knocking the photo or the photographer,(he's obviously talented), but it's a billboard, right? I just must not get it though. While so many photos in here got blasted for not showing the "city" or the "life"....I'm trying to figure out where you all are coming from. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm ranting...because I'm not...I just want to know what it was that represented city life so much in that photo that made it one of your favorites? Just a question.

I definitely don't claim to know the political situation in India, but I thought the picture masterfully portrayed changing cultural situations. I didn't have to think hard at all about how this would affect the people of a city on a daily basis -- and this photograph was so bold and in-your-face, that's exactly what I got out of it. If I got it entirely wrong, who cares ... I certainly think the art of a photograph is in what it evokes in its viewers. Now that I know what country the shot was taken in, I'm tempted to find out more about the man in the photograph.

Thank you for answering Drew...I do agree that the photo is well done and I do agree with you that art is what it evokes in it's viewers...well said. I've fallen into the trap of looking for literal meanings lately. When I first came here, I didn't do that so much. Maybe I need to get back to looking at things as an artist...and not the cynical person it seems I've become lately. I hate that about me sometimes...lol.
Thanks hon..

hhmm well KD, I wasn't refering to that shot. Although I do think #46 is a nice shot. I was refering to the shot of the doll head #98, I liked the color, the lines, the simplicity, it looks retro. As far as portraying city life,well.. you don't see many things like that in the windows of country folks.

I think that "future taxpayer" was way under-rated. It got second to last. What a great journalistic image. I am not saying it should have won, but the comments were rediculous. A baby being weighed in is not part of city life? Pull your head out.

Maybe no one has else has had the courage to be in the room when a baby was born, or tried photographing it.

Complaining about a photo like this because the baby should have been cleaned up, or the hand is not in the perfect position is missing the point. This was not a glamour shot, it was a slice of life shot, and a very good one. It is a shame that is finished next to last with such poor comments.

This is one where I think the voters need to challenge themselves to be open to things outside of the postcard shots.

I agree with you about #98 too...I thought the colors looked very retro...I could see that in a stock photograpy book. I also liked the simplicity of it.

Some of my favorites were:
#2, #4, #8, #6, #31, #11

I like Quiet Sunset #6 and Past Rush Hour #2 probably the best of all.
I just thought that Naptime #31, had a really neat feel to it.

Was #16 really out of legos?? Just curious.

Legoland California
Legoland Billund
Legoland Deutschland
Legoland Windsor

Just the links for the Miniland sections of the four parks (California and Windsor links are probably the best of the four). If you want to see more, I''me sure you can figure out how from the links.

I must be too average... My 10 votes for city life went to:

City Lights
A Picture of a drawing of a portrait
Quiet sunset on 79th street
Lady in Blue

These finished #3, #4, #6, and #19 respectively... Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not... I gave the winning photo a 9. I liked it quite a bit but I think it's a liitle over exposed. I think a slightly shorter exposure would have kept the neon lights from blowing out and bleeding into the image... it is a great shot thought... I just wish I could do rear curtain sync with my own camera... :)

I just noticed also that none of the top three photos had any one votes... I think that's a first..

OK, just because it's a new born doesn't grant the photo special priviliges.

Theoretically, if it were a photo of some guy in a public washroom sitting on the 'shitter' taking a crap it would have met the challenge. But I highly doubt you'd be bitchin' about how poorly it would have done in the results. And no, i've never been in the room while a baby was being born. In my opinion that's something that is very special to the immediate family, but as i look at this image as a stranger, it does absolutely nothing for me. None, zilch, zero!

It's evident that the photo touched you in a special way, but telling others to "Pull your head out", is absurd.

The nature of the photo doesn't grant it to be any better than other photos.

This is another good example of how some shots subjectively affect voters moreso than others...

There were some very silly comments to this photo. Comparing a baby getting weighed for the first time to someone going to the bathroom shows me that you have a very skewed view.

I do not think that this photo should be ranked higher just because it was a newborn. I think it should be ranked higher because it was a very good picture of a very important event.

People have many preconcieved notions of what makes a good photograph, and I am challenging us all to stretch that. I challenge myself to do that in every competition.

And if someone can't see how the birth of a baby would have something to do with City Life, then they do need to get there head out.

Sorry I hit such a nerve. But I find many of the comments to this photo narrow minded and condesending. Photojournalism is a valid form of photography, and this is a great example.

zeissman...I agree with your general premise but I gotta agree with brumos..the photo fell a little short for me as well.

If maybe they had held the baby up in the air...with the backdrop of a city (picture the Lion King but with the baby) I would have given the shot a 10. But just a photo of a newborn in a hospital weigh/scale doesn''t quite pull it up there.

i think by now we all realize that you feel VERY strongly about children, childbirth and how special it is to you. no one''s trying to dissuade you from that. however, you cannot expect everyone to be feeling and reacting the same way as you do. different people, different priorities, different views on things. different interpretations on what represents city life and/or a good photo.

aren''t we all here to see what kind of opinions are out there and what kind of reactions we evoke with our photos?
