And Susan, sorry, but it's a bit funny that you, by the looks of it, stay still at 5.0000. I would rip my hair off had I done so.

That's true...I was thinking some must be members or registered users that aren't logged in at the moment.

Also a large number of people would have found specific DPC photography threads via google. Especially in the lead up to Christmas people are googling camera brands and opinions.

That's a good point. I know that I STILL look at others photos and always pay attention to what camera and lens they are using for each shot etc.

And remember, average is 5.5, so even a 5 vote is below average.
I figure that the low voters have nothing entered and must also have nothing to say. I'm not sure why they're even allowed here (by that I mean that if they aren't contributing with anything constructive, why are they bothering).

Anyway - I'm pretty sure I've gotten plenty of ones and twos on my picture so far as I currently am ranked at a whopping 5.01. But this is one that I entered knowing that I like it and it's not DPC friendly so I can take it. Sort of.

You are not helping anyone on DPC when you do this including yourself. If you feel that your score needs a boost, Take a better picture! If you do not like the subject of a photograph, Then dont vote on it! Giving low votes out of spite just flat out sucks and it makes people want to physically harm you. But you make that imposible because you cowards never leave comments with your 1's and 2's so those of us who play fair will never know who you are and we can't send Art to torch your asses.

Ah I feel better now.

i'll pipe in here, too.

first, i have never given a 1 to the best of my memory, and i only recently gave a few 10's after getting the feel for the voting style here.

second, how can the "average" be a 5.5 on a scale from 1 to 10? or are you saying (1+10) / 2 = 5.5? or are you saying that the scores are given on a curve? what is this, the ivy league? ;-)

third, i tend to score photos in the 4 to 6 range if they met the core of the challenge, then push the outstanding photos (based on subject matter or just stunning impact) up a few notches. photos that don't come close to the core challenge focus, or are simple "snapshot" photos score lower. my take is that the photos here should be technically superior to snapshots (unless the challenge says "take a shot quickely", etc.) -- we all consider ourselves at least "advanced" amatuers with all our fancy cameras and lenses, right? (if not semi- or full professionals).

so, suck it up, get out there, and do you BEST photography

I think, and if I'm wrong I apologize for trying to clear it up that when PennyStreet says the average is 5.5 she might be referring to the average score of all the photos score every submitted to DPC. In other words the site average for all photos on DPC.

hmmm..so...let's think about this. Everybody's blaming trollers that come from nowhere giving low scores to the participants. If you look at most photographs after the challenge, the average vote for participant and the average vote for the non-participants are indicated. In most challenges, the average given from the participants in the challenge is much lower than the non-participants which voted. This leads one to believe that the individuals giving low scores are the photographers in the challenge trying to boost their own scores or being overly critical of a different point of view.

Let's not call this a rant, just an observation. Carry on with your score updates...

My score is up and down like a piston. Jumped back and forth between 6.3 and 6.5 three times today.

Mine was holding pretty steady at 6.3xxx all day, then all of sudden it went down to 6.20xx and has been there for a couple of hours. I'm hoping it'll go back up.

Don't think I can jinx it by posting for more damage than the trolls have already done!

ETA : And I was wrong, I did manage to damage the score by posting it. With 1 vote I moved from 6.5588 to 6.4660 .. that is a score of "-3" -> only implies someone saw this post, went back and decided to vote everyone down! :-X
