Would it be unethical to hide in a dark alley, jump out yelling 'boo!' and snap a picture of the poor person who happened to be walking by?

yes, totally. but GREAT idea! and sure to be a winner. mind if i copy it? :)

My 13 year old likes to hide in the basement and scare me, maybe I should do the same and take a picture. That might be a little cruel.

I wonder if we'll see more frigthened faces or more items which instill fear? Or photos taken from the viewpoint of the fearful.

My dog is terrified of the vacuum, yet somehow a macro of the Eureka canister just won't send goosebumps up the spines of photoviewers.

someone at work just sent out an email to get a group of people together to go sky-diving. i'd be very very very frightened to try this. sooooo, for a split-second, i was ACTUALLY considering this, because of the challenge. then i realized that the date was outside of the allowable date range. PHEW! this is insane, i need help! :)

i have a question, on challenges such as this, how big is the space that's given for creative interpretation?

I should hope all the space you want. Your voters are the only people who will have any say in that, though.

How do you all feel about showing fear vs. showing something that induces fear? My first ideas were of things that would be scary...perhaps to induce fear into the viewer. Sort of along the lines of Patella's "Homage to Hitchcock" or Corey's "BANG" (two very excellent photos).

But I think it would be a lot harder to show something scared as opposed to scary. I think it will be my goal to fulfill that challenge this week..I've got a few ideas that would probably fit...what do you all think? Is that interpretation hopelessly literal?

The photo I have in mind, though I don't know if I'll have the time to do, is a scared subject -- one who has fear. If I pull it off, I actually think it will be more humorous for viewers than anything else.

Intimidated or intimidating - would this be relative to the challenge? Something like..starting a new job for example - fear, intimidation. Just a thought?

I think anyway you can make the veiwer feel fear will work. A close up of a snarling dogs hangs, at terrified person, as long as it gets the point across.

I hope that voters don't comment "that doesn't scare me" ... i can hear the rants now... lol

I think I'm going to go the route of getting an image that is creepy/scary instead of showing someone who is scared. Or maybe I'll do both.

Or neither.

As low as my score is right now for transparency, I'm scared to submit.... Perhaps a self portrait?
07/01/2002 07:49:45 PM · #19
You know its bad when you keep looking at your own submission and think to yourself " damn that really isnt very good" I sure cant wait for this week to get over, and start a new vote.......Next time ill listen to my gut feeling about submiting a a picture.

You know how it is, You're only as good as your last picture - Well, I think that puts you in 1st place still (by the way, congrats)

Thanks,...for the first time put some thought into what I would shoot for my city life pic. And absolutely no thought into the transparent one,.. it goes to show that a little thought goes along way.

olya, there are no rules limiting what one's interpretation can or cannot be.

that said, many of us have noticed that the people voting (most of whom don't frequent these forums), seem to be almost painfully literal in what they look for.

so the choice is always please yourself or try to win. if you manage to do both, then you're really doing well : ) ..

I REALLY liked your picture btw (paranoia), and based on that, I can see why you would ask such a question.

as anyone who's followed this site for some time knows, there's always discussion about the challenges, because many people interpret them and score others in a painfully literal fashion.

so. . do people think that the challenge is about --

someone reacting in fear?

or something that is scary?

that is more what I had in mind - I have no ability for setting up a shot so what ever I get for this week will be something I have found. I have a few ideas it is just a matter of it I can actually catch the shot. I am thinking more of things that bring me fear - not to capture a shot that will bring fear to someone else.

either way it will be interesting to see the shots people come up with this week.
