I am still pretty new here, so I am not sure exactly how some of the rules work. I did not submit a photo for this weeks challenge because I just couldn't get a clear picture. Semi- Transparent means you can only partially see through it? Correct, water is transparent...unless you live in West Texas. Saran Wrap is transparent. I am not knocking anyones photo ata ll so please don't flame me. I am just wondering how strict the challenge rules are here. Thanks, Tiffany AKA rkymtndream

you will not be DQ'd for not following the rules. Just try to let your mind run. I think translucent was really more of what was in mind for this challenge.

Thanks,I guess I just misunderstood the challenge. I was think it HAD to be SEMI-transparent. I had a really hard time with it. Now I know. Now to catch fear.....it is going to be a long week. I wondering if a pic of my 5 boys standing in the kitchen in the morning is fearful enough. I know I am scared. Or maybe the grocery bill...hmmmmmm...............

Incorrect. You will not be disqualified for your interpretation of the challenge topic. You can be disqualified for not following the rules.

No transluscent was what was in your mind for this challenge, I wonder if the people setting up the challenge might have actually titled it Transluscent and not mentioned three clear (ie not transluscent) things in the challenge description if that was the only interpretation they meant. Try to remember just because you define the challenge one way its far from the only way try to let your mind run.

Transparent: Capable of transmitting light so that objects or images can be seen as if there were no intervening material. See Synonyms at clear.

Translucent: Transmitting light but causing sufficient diffusion to prevent perception of distinct images.

The challenge states semi-transparent and playing with distortions. That is obviously closer to translucent

Maybe you should invest in a dictionary puppet.

Hmm oddly I have a few with some interesting definitions:

Narrow-minded:
Lacking tolerance or flexibility or breadth of view; "a brilliant but narrow-minded judge"; "narrow opinions" [syn: narrow] [ant: broad-minded]; Rigidly adhering to a particular sect or its doctrines

Rigid:
Incapable of compromise or flexibility; Incapable of adapting or changing to meet circumstances.

Presumptuous:
Presuming; overconfident or venturesome; audacious; rash; taking liberties unduly; arrogant; insolent.

Its nice to know that you are the only person here who is able to fully divine the idea challenge. Maybe you can tell us all in advance what the challenge after fear will be since you are obviously the one making the challenge since you are so sure of the interpretation.

The title of the Challenge was Transparency. If you stopped reading there, you stopped too soon :-). The guide defined below the title for the challenge was pretty broad IMO.

I agree, that is one of the reasons I was looking forward to this challenge so much. I looked through all the enteries, and I think there are great interpretations of the challenge.

Judging is going to be very difficult. Between last week and this week, the my average vote cast should increase quite a bit.

It's really silly to argue about the difference between "transparent" and "semi-transparent". There's no defining line between the two. You're talking about photons of light that have to fight their way through air, dust, pollution, water vapour, and all the other things in the atmosphere that surround us to even get to the water or cling wrap, and then to the camera, or our eyes, and then through a lens and then to a ccd or retina, and then to our brain.....

If you can tell there's water in a photo, you're seeing the water, which means it's detectable and thus not fully transparent. And anyway, the challenge title is "Transparency", not "Semi-transparency".

Why look for things to narrow your ideas in the challenge description rather than things to inspire you?

To look for excuses to vote others' pictures down? I dunno. If I can't see anything 'see-through' in a picture I'll probably wonder how it applies to the challenge, but the difference between 'transparent' and 'translucent' seems a bit petty. This isn't DPVocab.

'Take a shot of anything that's semi-transparent. Play with distortion and colors in objects like cups, eye glasses, stained glass. Be creative, and good luck. The shot must be taken this week (6-24 thru 6-30).'

The challenge title may have been confusing if you did not read a little more, and think about it. I tried using a definition that sparked an idea. My interpretations of the challenge or almost never rigid. Last weeks was probably the one I took the most hardline approach on.

I am guilty of not reading the description and just focused on the Transparent portion - looked it up in the dictionary. Clear - able to see through - then I looked up translucent - allows light to pass but not clear. It was not until Sat night, after all of my shooting, did I actually read the description they gave - definately confusing. I worked hard at making sure my photo was Transparent - not just translucent. So, I'm thinking that either the description should've been a little different or the title should've been Translucent.

Either way - I still enjoyed the challenge, had fun and learned.

Being a little new - I have noticed that it seems that each week there's a discussion on the challenge topic - what it or isn't. Just pointing it out.

No, but maybe you have an idea there for an analogous site for writers ("Your best one-paragraph interpretation of...) -- it could be called "1000 Words" to make it the equivalent of a picture...

I am new too - and have noticed the discussion of the topic seems to come a bit late - I didn't see a lot of discussion over the difference between transparent and translucent until now. Maybe it is just hard to really figure out if you are on the same page as everyone else until you see what all the other people have done? I had a hard time with this challenge but I am happy with my submission - whether it is transparent or translucent! There are a lot of great shots this week regardless of if you put it in a category of transparent or translucent.

Folks,

I don't see the word 'translucent' anywhere in the Challenge Description, do you? ; )

Relax and swing.

: )

I did not understand why everyone is freaking out because I used the word translucent. It means pretty much the same thing as semi-transparent.

What is the big deal?
07/01/2002 11:44:34 AM · #18
I do see the words "play with distortion" but many of the great transparent/semi-transparent shots show little if any distortion. Also: I dont think it was required that we show everything listed - If it has any one of the items listed, then I feel it has met the challenge.

Colored glass, stained glass, Eye glasses - They all comply -
Waaahooooo - its a free for all -

Woah!

For photographers you guys sure sound uptight :-)

You sound more like supreme court justices hehe....

I agree with magnetic...just hang loose and swing with the ideas. All I care about when voting is 1) can I see through it and 2) is it interesting.

Beyond that I was thinking this challenge is almost the most artistic opportunity so far.

Well, I know right now I won't do well at all if people go for the purely "Transparent" approach to the topic. I saw "stained glass" in the challenge description and used that as my starting point. (I'm not one of the stained glass shots.) Since you can't usually see anything through stained glass (just the light shining through), I went more along the lines of semi-transparent/translucent. After a very scary start, I seem to be doing better, but I doubt it will make it into one of the top four shots on my profile page.
07/01/2002 12:03:22 PM · #22
When I said can I see through it I really mean't that in the most lenient of ways.

If light is passing through it I am pretty much going with the flow :-)

It seems a lot of the people that vote first vote low. Can't figure that out.

I have only seen one photo that is did not think meet this challenge for far. I love wide open challenges like this.

I confess..... I race through the photos giving them a quick vote. The ones I don't understand I give a 1. (I never give a 1 for the final) - that makes it easy for me to go back to each 1 and check it out until I think I understand it. Then it gets a real vote.
07/01/2002 12:19:56 PM · #25
When do you start voting? 1 hour into the challenge I was at 4.7 with 8 votes, by 12 votes I was up to 5. now at about 5.5 down from a high of 5.7.

Boy this sound like the stockmarket.

I do something similar, but I give 4-7's and then look them over side by side, and alter from there.
