What about urban decay? Old factories, graffiti, rubbish, abandoned places...
11/07/2009 07:02:13 AM · #2
Yes, I think urban decay makes for a great subject. I especially like the idea of shooting in old abandoned buildings. I saw a nice spread of photos of old abandoned Kirkland insane asylums on Flickr that were very cool. But does anybody know how you get access to those types of buildings? Do people break in to shoot them (they're usually boarded up and locked), or is there a proper channel to go through in most cases to get access and permission?

These are some shots I took in an abandoned factory near where I live:

//ellealevizos.daportfolio.com/gallery/204199

This particular factory was wide open and I just walked in the door. There were about 10 kids in there spray painting the walls. I took someone with me though... just to be safe.

The way you'd get in most of the time is to find an entrance somewhere. What I did was trespassing and the majority of this kind of photography does involve trespassing, so I suppose it's not for everybody... but it is really rewarding.

Try googling Urban Exploration. There are sites devoted to exploring urban areas, especially those seldom seen by the public. It is a fascinating subject for photography.

Yea, i think it would make for a great challenge as it's an area i'm very interested in. There are some DPC members who do some wonderful UE stuff. Mephisto is one of my favourite DPC photographers...

That looks like an incredible building, clive.
I am surprised there has not been a challenge on it yet actually.

it might have something to do with Property releases, duuno

And general liability issues, no doubt. If *I* owned DPC, I sure wouldn't want to mount a challenge that not only encouraged, but *required* participants to trespass in dangerous, derelict structures, LOL.

Nah! No interest here.....

ETA: You can go "Urban Spelunking" legitimately, but it's an honor system kind of thing.

You could put into the challenge description that trespassing and taking chances is discouraged.

I'm an advocate of taking responsibility for my own actions, so I ask permission, am careful, and am fully cognizant that I assume liability for my own travails.

I would prefer it as a basic editing challenge. Although adv editing can create some great photos I prefer basic for this challenge idea.

I was about to mention some of your shots. I think this would be another blue for you. I really enjoy your subject's and the way you PP them. I love this idea for a challenge. Some of my favorite images are of urvan decay.

You mean I wouldn't be allowed to use my decay filter?????

I like the idea as well - and I'm not sure why it would require you to trespass in dangerous derelict structures ?

When I shoot wildlife shots I rarely feel the need to climb into the enclosure with them :- )

There is normally plenty to be seen from the outside, however if people want, and are able, to go further that's up to them.

Nikonjeb, there is a filter that does that. SCORE! I mean.. Hmm interesting.

Hey, thanks for the nod, Clive!
I'm with NikonJeb on this one, everyone who trespasses does so on their own risc. I think it's a rather US american "habit" to try to shift responsibilities once they're in trouble...
On the other hand security restrictions are probably higher in the states when it comes to derelict buildings. Here in (East) Germany you usually climb a fence and that's about it. Most buildings (like the one Clive posted) are not even protected with a fence.
As far as the challenge goes, we did have "Abandoned buildings" I and II, and then another "Abondoned" challenge, yet imo "urban decay" involves much more than just abandoned buildings, but also i.e. industrial suburban neighborhoods that are left to decay or small details in the streets that are silent leftovers from times passed by.
A good example from your album, clive:

Of course I'm all for it! ;-)

edit to fix thumb

Didn't have to trespass to get these...

This one? Well...

Sure there could be liability issues, but like someone mentioned, the theme "Urban Decay" is fairly broad and doesn't necessarily mean you should go and trespass.
I would be for this challenge, but not everyone has to. There are plenty of interesting sights to be observed from the footpath.

By the way Clive, I checked out Mephisto's photos. They are really fascinating. I've spent lots of time browsing through their various folders under "abandoned". I think he would ribbon for sure in this challenge!

I think this would be a great challenge. I know lots of places I personally could shoot without be in danger or trespassing. I think those would be pretty silly reasons to not allow us this opportunity.

i live near sheffield and would prefer it if the title was urban dead LOL

but would be a good challenge, like this type of photography, just never got round to having a bash myself.

I think I'd have a distinct advantage being in Detroit!

Right now anyone living in an area where there was industry where the labor has been moved offshore and is/was under union governance has an advantage.

Hey pamelasue, You should set up an urban Detroit GTG. I would love that!! I'll come down from Saginaw for that.

im not sure if someone else said this already but having an opposing challenge(i guess they'd have to be basic) have natural decay? like leaves and stuff so that those4 of us without a broken factory can enter too

Decay would work better for those that live out in the hicks...

I think thats a great idea LadyK. They would go very well together.

I'm sure there are still lots of great urban decay shots to be had where i live in south wales, although many of the old mines and pits have been turned into museums!

I wish i still lived in Egypt though! I'm still sorting through and processing some of the photos from when i was there and there were plenty of Urban Decay shots...
