“Foliage”!! A better challenge would be “seasons on or of the planet”, contests that run four times annually for a period of 3 months each.
In the “Foliage” case it’s not only the southern hemisphere we have to apologies to, it’s the equatorial belt around the globe, both poles and all the arid and semiarid regions and almost all seas’ islands. So I say change this contest into “seasons” and have all wanting participate.

Agreed... I'm in South Florida. Will palm trees work even though special colors don't arrive with fall here? Officially it might meet challenge but I'm guessing the voters wont think so.

Portraits could be unfair for the same reason... not everyone has a willing subject... you win some you lose some...

it's an extra contest. No one is missing out on something they should have had. If he had it instead of an open or member challenge, then it would be unfair.

I wonder, what would you have said if you had an AZ instead of the VA for a state?

Or if the challenge was for a desert image????

Well, at least there will not be a huge discussion to try to define the challenge topic, and, there will probably be a lot of nice calendar shots to enjoy during the voting.

i'm no vawendy, but if the challenge had been something totally "not here" (like AZ or deserts), I would either try to set something up to emulate it, shoehorn in, or sit it out -- as has happened with the challenges that were totally "not" where I am.

it is an extra challenge, as she pointed out. there are still three other challenges (open, members, free study) to participate in.

*ahem* Until last year, when I pointed out to Langdon that in the Northern Hemisphere most natural (as opposed to zoo) wildlife has gone to ground, that Wildlife challenges were announced mostly during the months of Northern winter? That meant people in the Southern Hemisphere had an advantage, cause most of their wildlife is out 365 days a year. Lots of ours tends to go hibernate or migrate.

Just sayin.

Im sorry but I think this is silly complaining about the foilage challenge in this way. There have been challenges in the past that exclude some parts of the world and that usually gets evened out in a future challenge where the rolls get reversed.

Think Im going to go suggest a Desert Sands and Snow challenges...

OH WAIT A MINUTE!!

There was a Sand Challenge that you, HighNooner participated in with THIS Photo...

I certainly hope that you stuck up for people like me in the northern hemisphere like you have in this foliage challenge as I have no sand around here as Im sitting on the edge of the Canadian Rockies...

Or what about the All I want for Christmas challenge you participated in? there are LOTS of cultures on DPC that dont celebrate Christmas in any way so I hope you stuck up for them too...

Or how about Macro Without Bugs or Flowers II that you participated in, I dont own a macro lens so Im kinda screwed there along with LOT of other people on DPC...

Am I making my point yet?

I agree, there are Challenges that will ALWAYS leave some people at a disadvantage whether it's living and rural area and not being able to do Street Photography or vice versa with Landscapes...not having a macro lens for a Macro Challenge...or access to nude models etc. Whats' the big deal?

It's ridiculous. DPC is pretty democratic and they bend over backwards to be inclusive...let it go.

Personally, I thought the Ansel Adams Challenge was done, intentionally just to keep me quiet and at bay for a week but we can discuss that later... I'm still holding a grudge (kidding)

Geez you guys... quit attacking. No need for name calling (I'm hardly a crybaby or whiner and I can't imagine why it would seem silly). First of all, I actually didn't realize it was an extra challenge. Simply disappointed that I will be left out of one is all.

Two tiny comments are made an everyone else feels like they have to attack.

Seriously... not a big deal; those of us in the south will clearly get over it. Now everyone can move on and attack the way they do best... in the voting.

Oh yeah... THANKS for the extra challenge, Langdon!

I appreciate the extra fun. Even reading the complaining is fun. LOL!

Oh my! Can’t we be equal and enter all challenges like you guys? Our poor southern hemi-Spheroidicity!! I guess we are not from the North or west - Period

Don't you guys have leaves on your trees south of the equator?

I have some cheese I can send you too.

I would only want to have this site be seen with the international enormity that it became to measure! Not the regional US perspective it started with.

My only gripe is that they should have made the foliage challenge for the entire Month of OCTOBER!!
Some parts of the country already had their foliage.

I was in Maine in early October for that reason. I could have used my photos for this challenge now I cannot :(

NOw I am going to pray a hail mary so that my Red Maple tree changes color before the month ends.. :(

(which never happens in Houston)
