I'm in the market for this lens and have been on the FM buy/sell forum as well as DWF, but I keep reading about quality issues, backfocus problems, etc. I'm now debating if i'm better off buying new, having the warranty, ability to return/exchange, etc. vs getting a used lens that may or may not have problems, thus leading me down the service/repair road with Canon. Anyone care to comment? Seems like used lenses are going for about $1000, give or take a bit, while new would run me about $1350 or so.

Thanks!

Ditto - got most of my lenses on ebay ( inc. 24-70mm ) and they all arrived mint condition ( and with filters too !! )
They've always looked and performed as well as the new lenses I bought.

I got mine for $1050 and it looks brand new.

If you're going to buy it from someone, see if they can send you a raw file wide open and inspect it that way. Yes it'll be a big file, but if you're laying down $1000 then you should spend the time checking.

Yeah good call on inspecting A file or two. Should I be concerned with an out of warranty lens? What would a calibration or repair by Canon cost, and are some of the known problems things that can be repaired?

Thanks for the links but I can't access them!?

If the lens is in great shape, I wouldn't worry about the warranty. It really only covers defects anyway, so if it's worked long enough to expire, it's likely working fine.

Not sure the costs, but I'd guess a couple hundred for most repairs - increasing as the amount of repair work increases. But short of utterly destroying a lens, Canon can repair most anything.

K cool. One more question. I have a chance to pick up this lens from someone for about $775 but they have told me there are backfocus issues. Would I be better off dropping the 1000 or so on a known good lens, or is the likely repain going to be quick an cheap?

Guess I need to pay in order to see those linked threads, right? Are they for sale listings?

Someone here ought to know what that costs, since I know it's a problem from time to time. But if you're able to wait until Tuesday, call up the Canon service center and ask for a quote - they ought to be able to tell you at least roughly how much it could be.

i heard a calibration will cost you in the region of $250, with regards to the backfocus issue, I'm wondering if it could be fixed by the focus compensation thingy on newer canon bodies.

If you don't have this capability, I'd spend the extra cash on a fully working one just for peace of mind.

By the way I got $1050 for it, paid $1150 in 2007! Nice residual value!
