How do you know that you were getting 6s 7s and 8s? and now 4s and 5s? Are you just computing this with each update?

HawkeyeLonewolf has a link to a spreadsheet in his profile that works it out. careful, once you get to that point, there's no turning back... it takes the update button abuse to a whole new level.

Agreed, 100%. Although I haven't been using it in the Low Key challenge, it's just too brutal.

ETA: Regarding this challenge...
You have rated 34 of 74 images (46%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.8529.
No 10s yet, but I'll probably give at least one by the time I get to 100%.

I'm voting on a formula: 6 points for photo quality, 3 for "meets the challenge," and the last point if there's something really special about it that compels me to give it "extra credit" (like pawdrix's excellent image). Good breakdown? Bad breakdown? Fair? Unfair?

Whilst my current score is probably a fair reflection of my shot I feel the following needs to be said in terms of not only my digital photography learning curve, but also when viewing others photo's when voting.

I'm sure I've gotten a lot of hasty/impulsive voters on my entry, who haven't REALLY studied it or the title properly, missed the hidden treasure and thus marked it average or low because it looks "snapshottish" and moved on. Actually I had less than 15 seconds to capture an active and nervous subject, got 7 shots of which only 1 was in focus where it needed to be (subject AND treasure) to make the picture work. I discovered the subject by accident, ran to fetch the camera and shot it all in 15 seconds.
3 of the 4 comments (so far) actually understood my photo and I believe found the deceptively hidden "treasure". They voted it high as the avearge shot up after each comment. I agree in PP I could have done more with the photo (better tones/colours/sat/cropping). Cropping it tighter would have made the hidden treasure all too obvious). It's not a shiny building façade, an architectural masterpiece cathedral, a 1/8th of a second coastal landscape with dreamy sea and ND filters on the setting sun, a homeless person with the Amazon Delta for a face, or single water droplet frozen in mid air chosen from 372 frames with a 10fps Pro Camera with studio lighting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all of the above personally, and they are creative and difficult to pull off well but...

After this challenge I am looking at "ordinary" photo's with a new light (ptp) and will vote accordingly.

First of all welcome to DPC. The hardest thing about DPC is learning how to get a great shot that will not only look great on the screen but please the voters as well. Just because your shot is tanking with a 4.5 or lower doesn't mean that it's a bad photo. As far as walking out and snapping a shot in 15 seconds. Let's be honest here, how well of a shot do you really think that will be? The longer you're here the more you will learn. Give it some time and start looking at the top ten photos from each challenge and try to understand why those photos made it into the top ten. DPC is a community that isn't like the rest of the world and lot of people don't understand that. Myself being one of them from time to time. Put some time and thought into your work and really try to simplify your message. If 2 DPCers look at your photo and only 1 of them gets it then your photo is 2 confusing. If 100 DPCers look at your photo and 90 of them get it your odds are much better and your score on DPC would likely reflect it. A few other notes that make an image a good on here on DPC is a title that perfectly matches your photo, and usually a good sharp photo (blurry works from time to time but it depends on the challenge and the subject your shooting). If you want some constructive feedback from your photo make sure you start clicking the check box that says "I would like an indepth critique on my submission." If you want me to look at your photo now send me a PM with your title and I will tell you what I see. Other than that just give it some time and take in the information that others send out.

good luck

I'm a bit confused about some of the voting, myself. I got a comment from a viewer: "needs a better title, but love the picture and the set up. 6" If I "love the picture and the set up", I'm certainly going to vote it higher than a 6!!! If my photo is just 1 notch higher than "middle of the road", at least give me some constructive feedback to help me make it better!!!

I generally vote on a curve. I make one run-through and vote on everything. Then I take a look at all the 10's, 9's, 8's, etc. and fine tune my decisions in relation to the other entries in the contest. I try not to measure all of the entries against a "perfect photo" in my mind, but measure them against the other entries in the contest. This generally means that I will give a few 9's and a few 10's, although I find it hard to give 1's, 2's, and 3's without (really) good cause.

On a side note, thanks for explaining the spreadsheet. (I'll definitely stay away from that!!!) I'll just wait until the results for the breakdown. :-) At least my average came up a bit overnight.

I'm a bit confused about some of the voting, myself. I got a comment from a viewer: "needs a better title, but love the picture and the set up. 6" If I "love the picture and the set up"

I remember this photo and in my haste to attempt a 100% comment I did not spend nearly enough time explaining myself and I apologize.

In the photo in question, I felt it missed on two of the criteria I vote on, title and meeting the challenge. I also vote based on technical quality and originality.

I'm a newbie to the site and have asked previously about voting and scoring to get a feel for if i'm being too harsh in my judgement, as i give a heavier weight to "meeting the challenge" since that is sort of the whole point?

The best comment i've seen regarding voting so far was from the same viewer that trashed my photo ironically...(stated a little coldy for my taste but still hits the mark)

the votes are designed to reflect the perception of the viewer (me), not the photographer (you)

I'd love to hear more feedback regarding voting, I'm sure it's in a thousand threads previously but as I said, I'm a newbie and have limited my thread reading to current challenges...

You have rated 73 of 74 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 73 images (99%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.3288

That does take some time to comment on all of them.
My apologies about my last post. I whine too much. I do appreciate everyone who comments. I think right now I'm at 10% of voters commenting and 5% of views.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that the photogs POV was irrelevant, or that the voter's view was more important. Clearly it ain't. It's your art and your vision that matters. The vote just gives you valuable feedback as to whether your intention was received -- and that's what its designed to do. (But that feedback is only relevant to this audience, and this week. DPC has certain likes and dislikes, and even those change over time).

jeger's thread says a whole lot more, a whole lot better, on this topic.

Now back to the scores. :-)

That's not a cool average to be giving out. I hope you told everyone why you didn't like their photo instead of some short off the wall comment.

But that's also not cool to be calling out someone else on their average, especially a relative noob (no offense intended) who took the time to vote and comment on every entry. That ain't that low an average, especially for what is, imho, a weaker than average group of entries.

It wasn't me that posted it out there for everyone to read, and you may not think that's low but I do. We have a right to our own opinions right? To go even further I think that's a shitty average to hand out on a challenge that has so little entries but he can do it if he wants. BTW him voting low on most of the entries more than likely raises my chance of winning so I could care less what he gives out. I was just simply making a point.
10/09/2009 07:03:44 PM · #71
You are entitled to your opinion, of course. I don't think the numerical average is as important as the spread. A 5.3 ain't that much lower than your 5.7 across all challenges (which, btw, is the avg vote I gave for this challenge). If he had copped to a 4.3 I might agree with you. At 5.3 I don't. But that's just my opinion -- doesn't make me right or you wrong, it just is. Peace.

Hey everyone. Just a friendly reminder to keep things civil. Publicly calling out other users, either for their voting average or for a perceived forum rule violations, generally doesn't accomplish much, and is also not permitted in the forums. Knowing that everyone meant well, I'll simply ask that we return to the original discussion at hand.

Thanks,
-Terry

You have given an average score of 8.3333.

I was only in the mood to vote for the amazing photos

Now THIS is a good thread. :-) I don't mind being called out on it. I carefully thought out every vote I gave and gave thorough comments on every single entry in the contest. I only wish I had the kind of comments on my entry that I gave to everyone else. I have gotten a few comments, but most of them are rather short. (still appreciated) I made every effort to explain my vote and give constructive feedback.
