Perhaps your tripod isn't very steady? I use the self timer on 2 seconds and never gets issues with movement, unless it's extremely windy.

Sitting at 5.6678 and nursing this feeling of dread that the only way is down!

My first attempt at HDR and I thought it looked pretty good til I looked at the other comic book entries and realised I should have gone the same route! Still, it is a learning curve and I have just redone the shot using another programme and it DOES look better:) Maybe next time.

Still hovering on 6... I'm surprised with the score and thrilled with the comments. Really having fun with this one.

It's a tricky one this. The photo i put in is pretty much my favourite one i've ever taken. I spent hours and hours on it and am really pleased. To be honest i thought i would beat my PB with it, which ironically was a shot which wasn't HDR but many people thought was. I did think it might be voted down a lot because it doesn't really look HDR though. Which i'm guessing it has been. The thing is, i kind of agree with the voting in a way. A challenge for HDR is all about what HDR brings to the image. How it enhances it. Whilst i do think that by using HDR this has done that, i also think that my image doesn't solely rely on HDR to make it. Like someone said above, i really could have got an equally good image through normal processing. Anyway, it's all good in these challenges. I never take bad scores to heart.I'm pretty leftfield when it comesto DPC. Hey, i once had my choice for the Blue for one challenge come four or five steps up from the Brown!

Saying that though. I am very pissed off because my macbook has died a death today, looks like the motherboard is f**ked. So i am self medicating through Guinness and may be talking rubbish. As you were...

62 votes, 148 views, and not one of you bothered to tell me how awesomely amazing my shot is. Where's that Slippy-finger when you need it the most?!?

David, your shot is very awesomely amazing!

was doing great, a little over 6.0 (about which I'm ecstatic, since I hadn't ever done of these before)

then I got a 2 -- down below 6

then I got a 9 -- up above 6!

Life is so confusing! :D

Votes are all over the place, as are opinions and expectations. Two votes averaging 3.5, followed by two more votes averaging 7.5. It's great, no, it sucks, no, it's great, wait another minute...

Unfortunatly yea. Seems like a common Macbook Pro thing after a couple of years unfortunatly. Hopefully my hard drive is ok when i take it to the mechanics tomorrow.

Anyway, sorry for derailing.

Back to the point. I do think i've also voted quite hard on this in my first run (i tend to go through voting a few times if i can, pulling the shots i like upwards until i get a final 4 or 5 that i'm left with. I try to comment on them and also try to comment on my lowest scoring as well) But it has resulted in a lower scoring average at the moment i think. Not sure why yet.

I tried that an it didn't work either. CS2 wouldn't open the DNG. I had a thread going on the topic while I was trying to figure it out.

My score sucks for the amount of effort I put into this challenge. Not to mention the 200 bucks I spent to upgrade from CS2 to CS4 just so my Adobe can read Raw Files from my camera. It drives me crazy to have people say it is not an HDR photo however because it is HDR, Just not overprocessed to the likings of many of the voters.

Ummm, why didn't you just use the free DNG converter? You could have converted them to a DNG, then opened them in CS2. (making sure you keep the original raw for validation of course) It would have saved you $200.

thrilled since i don't think of myself as hdr maven
09/14/2009 08:29:02 PM · #167
seeing as i rushed to get a different image for the challenge last night i didnt give myself a fighting chance considering i didnt take time to set up the shot, i didnt give myself enough time to compare it to my other possible entry, and the HDR wasnt very pronounced. i accept my mid 4's score.

although im sure my best of september shot will be sure to please if i played things right. if not i give up on HDR haha. not a huge loss

Back up top an even 6.0 again. I seem to have gone into hover mode fairly early, but it's a good spot to be hovering in.

From the discussion I am pretty sure there are two schools of thought dominating: People who expect to see something with the stereotypical "HDR look", and those who believe the purpose of HDR is to enhance dynamic range with a natural appearance. No way to meet both expectations.

Maybe we can use this opportunity to define just what DPC expects to see when it comes to HDR photography. Is it a tool to enhance dynamic range, hence tonal range in photographs that can use this technique or is it a tool to create art through photography where colours are enhanced to make it more visually pleasing?

Maybe we can come up with a term to differentiate the two types and help stop the mixing up of different ideas into one general heading.

Industrial HDR or Enhancement HDR for use in landscaping or the real estate business in or out of homes, etc.

Artistic HDR for the type of photography we want to see where almost anything goes in terms of colour manipulation and effects.

Any other ideas for terms?

Well I have just finished voting on the HDR challenge.

You have rated 151 of 155 images (97%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 1 images (1%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.5099.

So that should shove it up the Khyber Pass of the trolls. You know who you are...the ones who like to hit the entries with low votes just to satisfy their own ego or their own pathetic lack of knowledge on photography. You know the ones....the ones that think HDR HAS to be done with multiple images, the ones that think HDR shouldn't be cartoonish, the ones that think that HDR has to be cartoonish, the ones that think if the image isn't a landscape then it can't be real HDR.....oh and the ones that think they know it all....yeah...you know who you are.

Oh and if people think that I vote biasedly...go jump....I am still pissed over my score and the posts of some of the know it alls in this thread...but did I go in and vote everyone down...?????? NOPE!!! I am able to stand above that crap and vote how I saw the images. Which I know that is what all of you are doing...but are you actually justifying that images quality and content...or are you just satisfying your own ego????

Oh and ART....if you dare put one of those 'OVERPROCESSED' stamps on mine...you are in biiiiiiig twubble....whips and all!!!

Judi - I think you are amazing photographer and it's clear that you might be slightly upset with your score (just slightly) but the above expression about HDR and what people think made me laugh ... loving the energy you put into that post ... sorry ... I know you are pissed but it was funny! ... sorry ... ok ... i'm done ... respect ....

Well, thanks for your vote. I would like a comment though...
And about "the ones that think HDR HAS to be done with multiple images", i answered your "bite me" post at this thread, but again, it was a question, not a critique.

Please someone comment!

LOL...I intended it to be a tad humorous....yeah I am angry...but at least I can have fun at the same time.

And posthumous....stay away from my image...I don't like your 5's and below!

Pedrobop...yes I read your reply last night. Let me know what your image is and I will comment. I do not and will not be changing my vote.
